    This was my first year climbing to do tree work. Learning to be patient and remain calm while climbing through a mine field of suckers and sprouts is key to a safe day. Thanks for the long video. It showed what tree work is really like. You didn't edit and only show 10 minutes of great cuts. You showed every branch slap and sucker scrape. Tree work can get frustrating so one must stay focused and remember it's one safe cut at a time.

    Get you a knee ascended, that way you can just walk up the rope while holding the rope hand over hand as you ascend. I use a zig zag for drt ascending. And if I’m watching this right, your hand ascended is the only thing holding you to the rope? So if it were to somehow pop the rope out while you slide up it would be game over?
    I love my zigzag, but I use it paired with my ascenders mainly on dead pulls. If I have the tree that I can use to walk up, I use a prusik cord so the zigzag tends itself up the rope as I pull. Like the hunch and slide method, just with much less friction and it slide itself up. Super easy, super smooth

    What the negative commenters failed to realize is that the ascent method you chose to use in this video is no different than the footlocking method with the foot locking prusik that was commonly used back in the day. I wish The OG's who have used the foot locking method with the footlocking prusik would give a round of support for the way this man ascended the tree. 1 hitch cord wrapped around the climbing rope. With that hitch cord attached to the climber, the climber foot locked on the Rope and pushed himself up with his legs while advancing the prusik with his hands. How is that different from the way this man ascended with a hand ascender?

    hey there - thanks for finding the time to put this together - can I ask, as last I climbed it was double moving rope (many decades ago) and now I have some time and an inkling to have fun again pruning my trees (your body ages but not your mind, fun is still fun in your 60s)
    So its interesting looking at all these RUclips clips of people using either static or double moving ropes. I'd never heard of redirects till now and it seems that the static rope lends itself better. But I can't recall it being a real problem if you planned things.
    Yours is the first video showing use of both. From what I can make out, would it be fair to say the SRT is good for ascending and the DRT is better for working in? For instance, folk seem to have trouble coming back in on a limb walk with a single static rope.
    As you say, climbing is 90% positioning, so if you plan things the double moving rope is better. Would that be a fair comment?

    • @chtclimbing
      @chtclimbing  4 года назад +1

      Tube rider I agree that moving rope is better for working around in the tree. It’s easier because you have mechanical advantage as soon as you need it. With SRT there are techniques to convert it to a mechanical advantage system. They both have pros and cons. But as you said if you plan it correctly you can really take advantage of a MRS

    • @chtclimbing
      @chtclimbing  4 года назад

      Tube rider I wouldn’t agree that MRS is better or worse than SRT and that SRT is better or worse than MRS. They both shine bright where the other is a bit dim.

    • @tuberider1171
      @tuberider1171 4 года назад +2

      @@chtclimbing so grateful you replied. I'm struggling to find a difinitive video on just that .. i.e. where each shines bright.
      In a nut shell, by way of helping people learn, are you able to elaborate.
      I'd be, as no doubt would many new comers, for your insights if you have a moment.

    • @chtclimbing
      @chtclimbing  4 года назад +1

      Tube rider the biggest problem that you would run into with the MRS is when redirecting. If you are looking to make a redirect the efficiency of your system will suffer terribly. Assuming your using a friction saver of sorts, introducing a natural redirect into the MRS will noticeably decrease its efficiency. The only caveat to that is depending on how much of your weight the redirect bears the greater decrease in efficiency.
      So I hope that’s clear as mud. My writing skills for explaining this stuff is lacking.
      Now the biggest problem with the SRS is as you mentioned before coming back from a redirect. I will say that that is not too much of a big deal now since we have the ability to quickly install some equipment on the line and create a MRS TO walk BACK BACK ON. Redirects are not a problem for this system because we can move up and down the rope.
      The last big difference is that for every foot of rope pulled out of a MRS it allows you to move upwards only six inches because it’s a 2:1.
      On a SRS, taking a one foot step with a foot ascender allows you to move one foot because it’s a 1:1.
      The simplest way to put it is if you expect many redirects to be made go with the SRS. If you have many limb walks then use a MRS. Lately I have been using the MRS because I have a job that has a production quota. The MRS helps increase my endurance and stamina. The SRT system is very physically demanding so I try to pick wisely.

    • @tuberider1171
      @tuberider1171 4 года назад

      Thanks so much for finding the time to explain the differences. I've not come across that logic before. Perhaps one day someone will have the time to make a video showing those pros and cons of each.
      In the meantime, on behalf of everyone that takes away some learnings from your video and response can I just say many many thanks for your input.
      Cheers from Australia

I left my knee ascender at home by mistake just this morning & had to use foot & hand ascender only, what a punish. Normally I'd only use harken knee & foot ascender on rope runner pro. Nearly zero friction, no spikes on the cams to fluff up the rope, hand ascender causes fluffy ropes & having another piece of gear above the climbing device is too clunky imo
