- In 2012, New York's Cardinal Timothy Dolan announced a $175 million restoration of St. Patrick's Cathedral. Years of neglect had taken its toll on the historic church, and according to Dolan, the landmark's restoration and repair was not a luxury. Mo Rocca takes a tour of the continuing work.
My grandparents were married here in 1978. My grandfather passed March 30th and seeing my grandmother torn apart tears me apart.
My parents were married there and my brother and I attended the school in the 50's and 60's. Such a beautiful church. I remember our class visiting the catacombs for a tour. May God continue to bless St. Patrick's Old Cathedral, such an historical treasure.
I am glad that they restored Saint Patrick's Cathedral, sure it must have costed a load of money, but it is well worth it, to remember the history of the Irish immigrants to New York.
First and foremost it is worth it because it's a building made for the glorification of God.

Since when? A Temple of Yahweh is holy because of His Presence not because of any symbols. And in the case of a Christian Church it is because of His promise that whenever two or three are gathered He is there in their midst. Tabernacle or not our Churches are holy. If you were right then on Maundy Thursday after the stripping of the Altars no Church is Holy.

Until you see the great cathedrals of Europe, which took centuries to build - not 25 years. Actually there’s much more magnificent cathedrals in the USA that have real gothic ceilings instead of the faux gothic at St Pat’s. In New York, at 110th and Amsterdam, is St John the Divine, which is the largest cathedral in the world.
In 1981, I was in a professional men & boys choir and we performed at St. Patricks Cathedral on Christmas Eve. In fact, during that Christmas Eve performance: at the front left of the large gold architectural piece above the alter [I can't recall the name for it], my brother and I sang a duet of "Silent Night" -in German. Talk about crapping your pants at 10 & 11 years old!
the large gold architectural piece above the alter is the baldachin or Baldachino, it was common in old great basilicas of all times.

Besides singing at St. Patrick's in NYC, we also performed at St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal, The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in D.C.

And dont forget the primitive baldachino in Bari at st Nichols Basilica. In poland we have baldachins in the Wawel Cathedral in krakow and in the primatial Basilica of Gniezno

Nice but the original St. Patricks Cathedral deserves at least a mention. Consecrated in 1815, it became a minor basilica in 2010. St. Pat's Old Cathedral on Mulberry was the end point of the St. Paddy's Day parade from 1815 to 1830 and was the seat of the archdiocese until 1879.
Stunning cathedral, even more so nestled among the Skyscrapers of Midtown. New York is the greatest city on Earth.

It would mean great change to go back to the Real Truth. Not keeping all the fictitious lies; trinity is not one being but YHVH + Y’shua + Holy Spirit, being more humble by going out to help the poor, going to food bank kitchens to help feed the poor and give the daily blessings, walking the hallways of hospitals to pray with the sickly and last rights to those who are dying, not for church money but to follow in Y’shua’s path as a disciple. When we visited NY, visiting St. Patrick Church in 2016 was one of our itineraries as most tourists do.
We lost our way , we got on the wrong bus 🤣🤣.
My mom was scared that we would be lost in the city 😂😂😂.

I wish they hadn't told me it's mostly just wood painted to look like marble. They had me fooled. Sounds like they had the cathedral restoration committee fooled at first too. Nobody knew until they got up on the scaffolding and took a close look.

The original Saint Patricks cathedral is in Ireland and has 800 years. It is not even catholic. It is an Anglican Church. If you study a bit of church architecture, you would know that this church with gothic style has strong bottom and very light ceilings to avoid disasters. I am surprised that people doing the restauration did not know that the ceiling was made of plaster and wood. Any quick research in google or you tube in how gothic church/cathedrals are build you will know that. I work in a cathedral in Ireland and its weird to know that they did not know that.

The interior of this cathedral was visually designed, as were all Catholic churches at one time, to focus on one thing: the Tridentine Mass, with priest and people facing the altar together. With the new Mass, the visual focus has shifted, and everything that is behind the altar is now not serving its original purpose. Imagine that you have a photo of a loved one in a beautiful frame. The frame augments the photo and enhances it, makes it important. Now take the frame out of the photo and display it with the frame in the background somewhere. Not the same.

Well, I’m glad they’re keeping up with the maintenance but I really HATE the way it looks now... 😞 It looks like a damn Mormon church! The gothic charm is in the staining, the shadows, the weathering, etc. Yes I know it’s only neo-gothic, but I still think it looked better before.
But doesn’t it just look like a cleaner version of the original? Didn’t they just clean what was there, fix what was broken and faithfully restore what was missing? Were there any major artistic changes?
Lydia Bergeron changing the color and lighting can change the entire look of something without the use of a single power tool. It doesn’t just look like a cleaner version, it looks like they knocked the old church down and made a new one out of glass and plaster. Have you ever been to Disney world? Or the Vegas strip? Or universal studios? Have you seen how they try to do an architectural style without building it how it’s supposed to be built so it just looks like a fake movie set piece? That’s what this church looks like now. It’s tragic. They could have at least done some intentional staining with paint to maintain the look, but I guess they prefer something artificial. 😞
