never thought I'd see The Boss go Northern Soul - and I am so happy to hear this - you've done the song justice and thanks for bringing new ears to this sacred genre.
@Evan Hodge the term “northern soul” originated in England in the late 70’s - derived the term from dance halls / nightclubs like Wigan Casino and The Twisted Wheel. The Northern Soul clubs all played very specific style of American 60’s R&B and Soul Music, with a focus towards lesser known recordings from Detroit’s MOTOWN records and Small US Soul Labels and artists. Bruce is covering a song by Frank Wilson that was originally released by MOTOWN and not stax…. Frank Wilson’s original recording of this song is widely regarded to be one of the finest examples of the Northern Soul genre - but Frank Wilson’s “Do I Love You?” Also is legendary as it one of the most expensive Northern Soul 45rpm records ever sold - after Frank recorded the song Berry Gordy gave him an opportunity to either be a recording artist for MOTOWN or a producer for the label. Frank Wilson chose to be a producer, and Berry firmly stated he could not do both produce artists and be one himself, so Berry ordered production was stopped on the manufacturing of the Do I Love You 45 - very few original copies survived after being destroyed by the label, and one of those very few copies saved by a plant working was sold for over 100k at auction years ago. The song has been reissued since then, but a very important part of being a TRUE northern soul DJ is to play and own ORIGINAL copies. That’s just the way it is. so MOTOWN started No Soul. MOTOWN is MOTOWN. Stax is Stax. Northern soul is a very vague and broad term. Use this song as a reference as to what is considered No. Soul. - plenty of compilations Put together from songs played in Wigan Casino or other true No. Soul Clubs available on RUclips for you to learn more.
