St. Malo, for me, is the prime exemplar of a war-blitzed city that managed to faithfully reconstruct itself without it feeling like a lame facsimile of the original razed town. Rouen comes a close second in this regard. If only Brest, Le Havre and Dunkirk, to name just 3 ignominious French candidates, had followed suit. You wander around intra-muros St. Malo, and unless someone pointed it out, you would have no inkling that this place was 80% destroyed. The feel is authentic. The rest of the town is worth a pop, too. The St. Servan suburb has a salty, unpretentious ambience, with decent walkable streets. Perhaps the *real* glory of St. Malo is natural: the sea and sand. It’s quite possibly the most glorious stretch of urban beach in all France. Even out-of-season it has a wonderful, sweeping allure that other, more reputed French city-beaches could only dream of.
Thank you this brought me to tears. I haven't been to my mom's hometown in 4 years. I miss the city so much and with Covid, I am stuck in Canada and I don't know when I will be able to see it again.
Anyone enjoying this walk should read the novel by Anthony Doerr called "All the light we cannot see" it takes place in this town and is a magnificent book that won a Pulitzer prize. It brought me here.
I had to rewatch Diane’s excellent walking tour of Saint Malo. I’ll be arriving there for 5 days on September 20, 2023 staying in the old town near the beach. My first stop will be the Boulangerie next to the TI office.

I would like to know who was able to destroy Saint Malo during the Second World War, when there were no more Germans for a long time....hummmm
@@gandigooglegandigoogle7202 Huh? It was 80% blitzed in WW2. You may need a better researcher, sonny.
How fortunate to enjoy the walk of this beautiful city without the usual crowds of tourists. Thank you,
My father used to live in this wonderful city for a few years when I was a teenager : best years of my life! I enjoyed it so much.
it reminds me of the setting in my fav novel " All the lights we cannot see" where Marie Laure used to live in Saint Malo.
Thank you this brought me to tears. I haven't been to my mom's hometown in 4 years. I miss the city so much and with Covid, I am stuck in Canada and I don't know when I will be able to see it again.
Heyy I went there last year for a month and it was really beautiful. Now that covid is gone, I hope you were able to visit !!
Beautiful city...now I have one more destination in France to visit! Thx

c'est une petite partie de la ville historique mais la ville s'étend en dehors et là il y a des espaces verts
I like small cities in France. IParis is too crowded. Thank you
St Malo is in Brittany , not france!
Britanny is a region in France
