Nice job with the tag, Aaron. That’s incredible that that hard copy of The Fraud was in a little free library. I think I paid full price for it when it first came out. (And, as I think I commented in another of your videos, my book group is currently reading it, and I’m enjoying it a lot.) 😊

Thank you, Pat! I know, it was quite astonishing to find it there. I had my eye on it for a couple of weeks and there were no other takers, so eventually I had to go for it!

Hi! Thanks for doing our original tag ! A piano in a library ?! I would love that ! Wow- two of my favorite things: music and books. 🎉

This was a great tag - I only wish I used my library more often so I could answer all of the prompts! Maybe I'll aim to come back to it one day.... And yes, there was a piano in my library the last time I was there. I guess I'll have to go back soon to see if it's still there!

One use of libraries I've found especially valuable of late has been checking out books in order to compare translations. I recently checked out a few editions of The Tale of Genji, and I'm so glad that I did as the translation I was initially eyeing turned out not to be my favorite, and now I feel quite set to finally tackle such a behemoth. Libraries are such gifts, and it can be easy to take them for granted. I'm glad you did this tag.

Absolutely - and I think I have often found myself taking them for granted. I would love to be able to use my library in the way you described. There's a part of me that doubts that they'd have access to a wide enough variety of translations of a particular work. But, if I don't ask I don't get, I suppose! Out of curiosity, what translation of The Tale of Genji have you settled on now?

@@aaronfacer My initial inclination was to get the most rigidly accurate translation, allowing the strangeness of the work to remain intact. However, I found the Dennis Washburn so engagingly readable and the "more accurate" Royall Tyler translation so brittle and overly studious, that Washburn is now the translation I own and plan to read.
Reading them side by side, I found the substance the same, but Washburn manages to remind the reader of context more naturally within the translation, with less reliance on a character list or footnotes in comparison to Tyler's efforts.
Tyler's translation seems like one best for a more intense reread.

Thank you so much for responding to the tag Aaron. I also love to buy books when I am on vacation.. rather than get a typical souvenir, a book will remind me of that trip! Did I hear right? Do you have a piano at your library? How lovely!

Thank you for tagging me, Daniela. It was really valuable to think through these prompts. And yes, there was a piano in my library the last time I was there. I guess I'll have to go back soon to see it it's still there!
