In 1876, white marble from a different Maryland quarry combined with granite from several quarries in New England to create stones that completed the Monument.

I lived in northern Virginia, right outside of DC for 9 years. It is beautiful there & a fun place to visit. Most everything there to explore is free. Of course, there are some particular museums that cost, but get a day pass for the metro & just go explore. Even the zoo was free!
