    • @StevetheBartender_

      Fox Two in regards to chilling and temperature, stirring is just inefficient shaking. It takes 12-15 seconds to reach equilibrium when shaking whilst over 2 minutes of stirring will not reach that point. Shaking also introduces aeration but I’d stick with stirring for spirit-forward drinks.

    I love the scene in the movie where Daniel Craig as Bond orders this. It really seals him as becoming "Bond". I think a lot of people were expecting another Bond movie and really didn't like Craig as Bond, but the film was so much about how Bond became who he was as an agent. Everything from the way he treats women to his first kill earning the 007 status and his favorite drink. Casino Royale is my favorite Bond film, I'm so glad you did this drink! Of courses, stirred NOT shaken!!

    I believe there’s a lot of misconception around the use of ‘parts’ or ‘measures’. A ‘part’ or ‘measure’ is whatever the bartender makes it, provides that it stays consistent across the individual drink.
    Being English, it’s likely Bond was assuming measurements of 25ml (the standard English pour, rather than Australia’s 30ml).
    The Vesper is probably 75ml Gordon’s, 25ml Vodka, and 12.5ml Kina Lillet. In Casino Royale, however, the drink is made in France, which uses (more or less) 30ml pours.
    The Gordon’s used was the old 47% ABV version, and the vodka was actually over 50%.
    Should be shaken, not stirred.

    • @StevetheBartender_
      @StevetheBartender_  5 лет назад +3

      Yes, I'm aware of parts.. it's just a ratio. I did mention that if you did translate the ratio as 1 part = 1 oz then it would be too much, hence why I lowered the recipe. In saying that, I changed the ratios too by increasing the Cocchi Americano (mentioned this in the first comment).. but yes, some people probably do confuse parts and measures.
      Spirits vary everywhere - in Australia Gordon's is only 37% and I think (I could be wrong) it's at least 40% in the US.
      You say that it "should be shaken, not stirred"... it doesn't have to be.. if I prefer to stir it, I can... hell, if I wanted to serve it hot in a bucket I could because I make it how I prefer, I'm not James Bond! 😂

    • @mszoomy
      @mszoomy 5 лет назад +1

      Parts are infinite, measures are not. You can have a part that measures 500 ounces if you want, as long as it's the same for all ingredients. So 1 part gin and 2 parts vodka is 500 ounces of gin and 1000 ounces of vodka (hypothetically because that's a huge drink)if you want to make it smaller you can can the base measurement to 10 ounces = 1 part as long as you do the same for all ingredients.
      That's my understanding of it

  • @farklestaxbaum4945
    @farklestaxbaum4945 5 лет назад

    The hefty measurements that Bond asked for were deliberate. If you read through the original novels, Bond is essentially described as a functional alcoholic, he is CONSTANTLY drinking, presumably to cope with the reality that he is basically a paid killer for the government. Anyways, I just recently found your channel and subscribed, love the vids so far, keep it up! And I think the "shaken, not stirred" request by Bond was deliberate as well, shaking gets the drink cold faster, which presumably allows him to get drunk more quickly.

    Lillet Blanc lists quina quina as an ingredient on the bottle. I also remember the first time I opened a bottle that it definitely had a whiff of tonic water to it. This leads me to believe that the ingredient is still present. It could have been reduced in the re-release or maybe people were mis-remembering the original flavour profile thinking it had a more pronounced quinine note.

    • @StevetheBartender_

    I see you're getting a lot of crap for stirring. In my book, do as you please.
    However, there are a couple things to keep in mind. One, in the books James Bond was quite fond of American spirits (he actually drank more bourbon than anything else) and the request for a shaken Martini could be a nod to what used to be called the American Method (and since the martini is an American cocktail, presumably that was the OG way of doing things). Two, he did order other types of Martinis and they were almost always stirred, so he could have been trying to stay sober while giving the impression that he was quite drunk.
