With its fast-growing economy and young population, India has become an increasingly important market and popular destination for global business and investment. However, foreign businesses exiting India have outnumbered those entering over the past few years. Why have so many foreign companies shut down business in India? For multinational corporations operating in India, how can they benefit from the Indian market while minimizing the risks of being penalized by the local government? To help us answer these questions and more, we're joined by Prof. Swaran Singh from the School of International Studies of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Charles Liu, founder of HAO Capital, and Einar Tangen, independent current affairs commentator.

The guest peddles the usual spin that India is fastest growing economy but that is just blatantly false from simple math alone. If India is growing at 7% and China at 5%, that does not mean India is catching up to China. The gap is infact widening, not narrowing. China’s GDP is already 5-6 times larger than India, so for India to maintain equidistance, it has to grow at 25-30% just to keep up.

What opportunities? India has blocked BYD investment of some $1 bn few days ago. On the standard 'national security' grounds. Even Foxconn pulled out of its bid on building some $20 bn manufacturing base there last week citing major deeply and rooted problems, as well as that the project was not moving fast enough and that there were challenging gaps which were not able to be smoothly overcome. India is a bаckward country, investing in it is like a ticking bоmb waiting to blоvv up in your face for one or another opaque reasons.

It is unattractive and unrealistic to invest in India...corporate taxes are very high at between 25%-30%, foreign investment laws are vague, infrastructures are inadequate, corruption is rampant, and worst of all is that there's a trend of making new tax laws and rules on an ad-hoc basis to "teach" foreign businesses a lesson for not giving enough "gifts" to certain people.
