I fitted gate valves when I rebuilt my bathroom over 35 years ago and yes they do seize up from non-use. But I've always been able to free them by applying Plus Gas Dismantling Lubricant to the spindle and leaving for 20 minutes or so.
I've seen plumbers removing gate valves and replacing with lever valves. What's your opinion on lever valves - more reliable or just another source of trouble?
Yes, I snapped a 60 year old gate valve, had to drain tank, tank was due for a clean out anyway, bit of a painstaking job getting it emptied, one of those cheap plastic syphon pumps helped, I now try and remember to open and shut (exercise) the new gate valve every so often.
22mm gate valves on H&C feeds to power shower pump in hard water area. Hot valve won't fully shut off due limescale. Fixing (blocked filter) downstairs shower mixer was fun in swimming trunks with hot water gushing out was fun! Next time I'll be changing for full flow lever ball valves.
I have one of these in the airing cupboard (like Al said). It is absolutely SOLID. I daren't touch it. I have figured out I can put a bung in the bottom of the loft tank and that does the same thing.
Any tips or ticks for radiators not heating fully ? Some are piping hot, others are stone cold. Tried bleeding the cold ones and just get cold water …. Any advice is welcome!
Hi Al, we have a new-ish Worcester Green Slave?? - Green something external oil boiler, and we have 'very high' water pressure. We have both a front and rear outdoor tap, but each tap is fitted inside the house with one of these red gate valves. They repeatedly fail. We have had them both replaced 2 and 3 times. It is as if the pressure is too much for them. The valve always leaves the water stuck 'on', and so I can never turn our outdoor taps off from inside the house.. What is the best replacement solution? - Different type of shut off? We do not have any tank in the loft. Also, when leaving our home empty for several months, are we best to leave the heating on, or turn off the boiler and close the main water feed? Still love your videos. Many Thanks. Much Love from Scotland, ❤ X.
Best bet is to change them valves for a half lever ball type. When leaving home in winter time leave water off, but heating on the frost setting to avoid freezing up. The heating can run with the water off.
@@dereton33 They must have a compression gland though surely (hence the hex nut below the handle). Otherwise, what's causing the friction to prevent them turning? I guess corrosion of the gate could cause it but usually only if the valve is closed rather than open.
Gate valves are more trouble than they are worth to touch. Often easier to bung outlet of tank or drain down and replace with a full bore quarter turn lever ball valve
Gave me the confidence to tackle my stuck outside water cutoff. Worked a charm! Thanks!!!
I don't have a gate valve but I always watch your vids for tricks and tips and leave a comment for the algorithm.
Thanks a lot John. Much appreciated.
Great tips on the gate valve.
Nice one 👍
Thanks 👍Cheers Dave.

Lever valves are far better for certain jobs,I have fitted hundreds of these and never had a problem with any of them.
@delboy3425 Thanks for your wisdom.
Always the best bet.
@@dereton33 Thanks!

That`s one of best ways.

Balance the system, this usually works. ruclips.net/video/KSY8R6brvOo/видео.html

Thank you
No problem.
I have been a subscriber for a while
Thanks a lot.
Isn't it also worth slackening the gland nut to free it up?
No it doesn't do a thing with them only stopcocks and rad valves.

Agree with you Nick.
What's F and E ?
Feed and Expansion.
Why not use a ball valve?
You can if you want.
2:36 Just me or anyone else? 🤣
It does work if you take it easy. SNAP OOOOO Blast.
It goes bing soon as you put any pressure on it and spins freely doing nothing.
Your draining down and using a lever valve next time
Best thing top do if you can do it.
I have a standard stop cock , I'm glad I don't live in a hard water area though.
You and me both.
Gate valves🤮🤮🤮...should be banned
