I like the concept It is really simple yet affective and if you don’t have or know someone who owns a 3D printer you have better alternatives for your Lego models
Modifying my Lone Ranger Constitution Chase here, and this video is really helping. I got half of a Technic set from a yard sale and I am scrapping it for parts. With fewer pieces ive been able to do so.
Wow, these pistons designs look so complicated but they look so easy to build with they way you 're showing them. Love this video! keep up the great work!

i use the technic axle pin connector pieces of the rods but they take up a whole stud. i will definitely use these ideas. thanks for sharing you are the best!
Thanks for making the video! This will probably help me more too since I’m building a LEGO Steam Train out of the two locomotives of the 2018 high speed train 60197. Thanks again, it’ll really help me 😁👍
You out here with full valve gear and I only have the standard bogey wheels 😔 Seriously you put SO much detail in your models and your suggestions are really helpful and informative
Thanks for making this, because of you doing this, I now know all the techniques and credit to your friend who helped you create such realistic models!
2:12 if your mode jams use gears Ok how? Cuz on my Olton hall model, her wheels frequently jam. I placed gears on her middle axle and around it. The other 2 are using technic pins as they can’t go trough all of the undercarriage
You can also use half-beams for the piston rods to save parts, and I find using sticks with grabbers and mini guns and 1m snap pins works well for making eccentric cranks. If I wanted an internal cylinder system, I’d use those triangular Technic pieces for the frames and the half-beam driving rods
As soon as I finally splurge and get some of those driver and blind driver wheels, I'm gonna have to make a steam loco just to use some of these ideas :)
wait i just remembered asking you how to do walschaerts valve gear. you said you will make a vid on it and i didnt think you will but i was wrong. thank you
Excellent video! Thank you for all the ideas! Here's a tip from me: the way that real engines' valve gears never jam is through what's called "quartering". This method puts one side's valve gear 90 degrees ahead or behind the other. It runs beautifully and never jams! I've never had to use gears. Just thought I'd let you know! Happy new year!
I am happy to say, I have made a 040 peckitt using the first piston design, with a rank of small 4 wheeled coaches, there is still alot to add, 1 part is massive struggle, but the other is simple, I am changing the entire loco to a light green, like Scotsman on the USA tour, or navy blue, and to make the pistons red
This is an excellent 'how to' video, many thanks. I have to say I'm rather lazy when it comes to piston types and only ever seem to use the, as you put it, GWR slider type as it's simple and can be made to work with most of my 7 wide models.
FINALLY I’ve been searching for a design but there were no search results apart from Luke tritons piston rods Anyways that man you saved me :D I can finally make my little 0-4-0 locomotive some rods And I got a new 4-6-0 locomotive so expect seeing it in one of my videos :)
I have 2 questions now 1) Could you add more wheels to the GWR slider one, so it could be a 2-6-0 2) Can we have a block for block tutorial for the GWR slider.
You could easily make it a 2-6-0, just add another wheel and maybe use more gears. I'd also use L wheels rather than XL. The block isn't that hard, just copy what I have used there, and fill in the plank spaces with two extra cams.
The Blue wheels kinda reminds me of Thomas's Wheels. That reminds me. I'm working on my own Lego Train moc. And one of them is Thomas. But unfortunately the Wheels are Black. But I'll repaint them if I want to. But I don't feel like it right now. But the Side Rods looked cool
Thanks so much for this video, now I can finally make a steam train with rods🤣. PS. Can you pls make a 57xx pannier tank. It'll look great amongst your collection. Again, thanks for the video, take care
I do have an idea, but again, I know you're mostly invested in british, unique locomotives: what about the american Chesapeake and Ohio L1 490? It's a nice yellow/silver streamliner. Overall, I like your designs! Keep it up!
Hi. Do you know how to make sliding driving axles for Legos?, as I love to have flanged wheels on the centre axles. I'm aware that you decided to put flangeless centre wheels in order to make the loco be able to go round curves. Thanks.
I’m currently working on a nickel plate road 765 2-8-4 berkshire moc and I’m having trouble with the pistons. I’m trying to get them to run as realistic as possible while keeping the baker valve gear look. I could use some pointers
That's a real tough one. I'm not entirely familiar with the prototype but after seeing some photos, I'd op for number 3 (from the video) and try and modify it to make the eccentric rod longer. Hope that sort of helps.
If i may ask: you’ve done the hogwarts express moc but are you also going to do the coaches? Since the one lego gave us with the set is super inaccurate and id love to see an accurate lego hogwarts express coach
Hmm, maybe not of an engine... I could certainly try, but it usually takes me 3 months to complete any single engine. I have to wait on Bricklink orders as well, which slows me down. Maybe as a video challenge at some point? I really want to do some time-lapse videos for my future layout (buildings and scenery). Thanks!
I guess, the current solution looks great! :) Maybe you could think about also speaking the text as audio... that might make the video more "relaxing" to "consume" xD...
Brilliantly done. I can’t help but think though, after seeing the “Tight fits” example, with the technic half beams as side rods. Might it be feasible to do a more realistic Walschaerts valve gear with another small half beam? I admittedly don’t know if there’s something like a 2m Cross and hole half Beam to act as the eccentric. Though now I’m wondering if trying to make motion out of official pieces wouldn’t just make it stick out to far. Either way, best of luck on your current and future builds!
I used these tight fits for an steam engine I was building but it failed because I had no good working tender design But still an awesome build and video
I would like to add another tigheter, smaller fits being a combination of you 0-4-0 slider desing and an actual simple cilinder sistem and its still within 8 studs wide
