The temporary deafness Tom Hank character experiences is called acoustical trama. It was quite common during the war. The barrage balloons you see when Tom Hanks gazes over the battlefield were set up by the 320 Barrage Balloon Battalion, an all Black unit. One of the medic with the 320th was Waverly Woodson. Corporal Woodson was seriously wounded and several of the men with him killed when his landing craft hit a mine. Though hit with shrapnel in the back and groin he managed to give aid to all who needed it, both Black and White. He actually went into the surf to save 3 men. Even though he was under fire he managed to save the lives of over 200 men. He earned The Distinguished Service Cross, America's second highest medal for courage under fire and the Purple Heart. I wish they had shown these men landing on Omaha Beach.
Saving Private Ryan is incredibly realistic in most every way, with a very few exceptions...such as bullets not being able to kill you that far underwater, and flamethrowers not really exploding that way in 1944. One thing to know, pay no mind at all to that man who took off his helmet on the beach at 6:15 and then got shot in the head...that next shot would have killed him even if he had kept his helmet on. The helmets of WW2 would almost never stop a bullet, except under very very rare circumstances. The movie is not a true story, and it differs from the actual history of D-Day in many ways...but the basic plot is loosely based on the 4 Niland Brothers, one of whom served with the 101st Airborne Division. However, when 3 Nilands were reported dead, no mission was sent behind enemy lines to get the last brother, and it turned out that one brother that had been thought dead had actually only been captured. The 4th brother was found and notified by an Army Chaplain, and was sent home, but as far as the brothers none of what happened in this movie happened in real life. There really was a Company C of the 2nd Rangers that landed on Omaha Beach, but they were commanded by Captain Ralph Goranson, and they did not land quite where it was shown in the film. Probably the most important historical thing that Spielberg got wrong is that he had the boats that carried the Rangers to the beach being driven by Americans...they were not. On D-Day, the boats that carried the US Rangers to the beach were driven by UK sailors of the Royal Navy. There are many other things in the film that are not accurate to the real history of D-Day, but that one really fails to honor some of the men that fought and died at Omaha Beach, so it is definitely the one most worth noting. The location at the beginning with the French and US flags is the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial...located in Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France. Most of the US servicemen killed in the 2 and a half month long Normandy Campaign are buried in this cemetery...a total of 9388 burials.
D-day was June 6th but the battle for Normandy lasted over 2 months. In that time the allies had 53,000 KIAs while the Germans had about 80,000 KIAs. Once the Allies broke out of Normandy it was a race to the German border.
So good to hear something other than american voice. The first scene was very realistic. Beach landings were incredibly dangerous and vets who saw this movie when it first came out were left shocked at the realism of that scene. The story is based on a change in policy after a whole family of brothers were killed in the same place. It didn't state to bring the survivor home though. Just to split them up so they didn't all die at once.
You are wrong about 26:02 . The guy who killed mellish was an SS soldier. You can see his collar crest there is as SS sign. he's wearing ss uniform. the guy in the end dies is steamboat willi was wearing Wermacht Uniform. They are completly different units. in fact the actors also different but they look like eachother . I guess becaue they were both bald.
Just to be clear...your first conclusion was the correct one...the guy that killed Mellish is not the same man that they let go after Wade was killed and who killed Miller at the end. You can see this on IMDB, the one they let go is listed as Steamboat Willie...the one that killed Mellish is listed as Waffen SS soldier...the pictures confirm that it is 2 different characters with 2 different actors...Joerg Stadler vs Mac Steinmeier. As for why the SS man did not kill Upham, maybe he saw it as "returning the favor", since Upham could have easily killed him and did not...or maybe he did not consider him a threat big enough to even bother shooting, since Upham was crying and all...or maybe a bit of both?
Thank you so much for your comments! I can’t believe I got them two mixed up! At first I thought he looked different but I was convinced at the end that it was the soldier they let go earlier in the movie smh🤦🏻♀️ loved reading your comments and honestly I thought the movie would be a decent representation of what happened on D day, regardless, I really enjoyed it even though I got a few things wrong.
@@HannReacts No worries...lots of people get confused by the similar looks of many of the soldiers when it comes to Steamboat Willie and the guy that killed Mellish. You would not believe how many people refuse to believe that they are two separate people, even with the evidence from IMDB. LOL If you want to see a more accurate war movie from Spielberg...I recommend Empire of the Sun...starring a very very young Christian Bale...it has always been his best war film, except for Schindler's List. To be sure...this movie is a masterpiece of filmmaking in so many ways...but I still think that Empire of the Sun is more accurate and a better movie overall.
The men didn't just die saving Ryan. The died protecting a key bridge which if the Germans had taken it they would have pushed their Panzer units to the Beaches and thus endangering the D-day landings.
13:50 was just looking at (the wrong) Ryan, feeling bad for him/about the situation. Lots of older movies got a bunch of just... naturalistic stuff like that, it's for realism :D
You need to add 2 more great WW2 flicks. For a continuation of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN watch A BRIDGE TOO FAR. To get a glimpse of the Pacific theater watch HACKSAW RIDGE. There are 3 good series on WW2. They are: BAND OF BROTHERS THE PACIFIC MASTERS OF THE AIR Other really good WW2 movies are: FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA MIDWAY (2019) not the 1973 version. DAS BOOT German film about a submarine and its crew. DOWNFALL about Hitler's last days

You are right. it probably is not 100% accurate. The actual horror was probably 10 times more disturbing than the movie.

As a smoker, when I see a fellow smoker, I subscribe off that alone. Rare to see now a days..
Great reaction, thanks for posting!
Upum was let go by the German because he saw him as a broken man. He was not the German they let go.
Now you need to watch Hacksaw Ridge.
The Omaha beach scene was filmed off the coast of Wexford Ireland..
Very moving story and the film was incredible, I was filling up watching you filling up!! 😢
