Centered is the target, but we always try to “lean” towards the pivot side to increase ratio slightly and give it a hair more performance.
We always check the wipe with zero lash, which actually gives us a slightly wider sweep area than it will have with lash, slightly.
I like when I learn alittle something from you Jeff. I've never used helicoils and now I know what I would need to do if ever I needed to.
Lets hope you never have to, but at least you have an option ;)
Lost one for me U20 engine (Datsun 2000 sports) Used a piece of towel rail. Fitted perfect. It's only to keep alignment. Still in there probably. L series looks a bit smaller. I might've cut it to reduce the diameter. Can't remember - 35 years ago. Your method worked good. Your getting ahead on this project now!!! (groan) The rocker cover gasket will lift it a bit, and maybe peen the splash guard a bit with a ball pein hammer
Mr & Mrs Jeff, never ever stop
Like you say "I'm so close" check the bearing blue wipe on the rocker arm pad where the cam runs, not the tip to valve,
to make sure the cam does not run off the end of the cam pad.take plugs out and turn crank off TDC and check only one intake and exhaust rocker. If wipe mark off valve end, lift cam ,if off pivot end, lower cam on head
On your cam spec card is your clearance hot or cold as it gets 2 thou wider hot .
Jeff... yes, Mr Rob is correct: checking for the wipe on the rocker pad from cam lobe is more important than the rocker tip to lash pad, especially if your cam has been reground. Both datsun/nissan books go thru this in detail, especially the rebuild book
@@joem6859 I saw this and thought the same, thanks for confirming.
Like the cam tower shims, raise the valve cover with 2 gaskets maybe...?
Just rewatched this Jeff, put the fuel pump cam wheel on the front of the cam shaft sprocket, unless you are going elec fuel pump
Nice channel you have here Jeff I was thinking "Hey I didn't know Roger Federer could build cars speaking with Aussie accent!" ;)
Well done Jeff!!!
Just curios, how did you time the cam to TDC with the head out of the block?
Jeff, the reason why you had problems installing the helicoil is because you didn't have the ring (grub screw on side to loosen and adjust) on the install tool down to the top of the helicoil. It's that plus the slot on tip of tool which assists to wind the the helicoil in. Cheers mate.
Ahh, that makes sense. As I mangled it, I just cut the end off so now I just have a short slot on that on ;)
Yes Australia did get a few AMX's . Not many but there are still a handfull out there. In the 70's it was the anti-camaro. If you wanted to be different you got one of these. People back then didn't know what it was either LOL.
They mustn't have sold very well as I have never seen one :D
australianjavelins.com
Wow, that is cool. Now I know why I have never seen one, with only around 250 ever made in Aus, that makes them very rare.
Honestly, people over here don't even know what they are! Here's a little info about them in Australia, and a cool Mad Max MFP livery one from the original film! www.onallcylinders.com/2015/08/27/amcs-and-mad-max-doug-kinneys-amx-obsession/
Interesting story. I wanted to get back into amx's in the early 90's. I saw an ad in the local newspaper (yes before internet was popular) and the guy was a car hoarder in santa rosa ca. He was also a big packard hoarder. He had huge barns full of packards but he also had 8 amx's sitting unrestored and original. He wanted too much i thought, $4500, for my favorite green 390 4 speed one so i passed on it. Dummy i know. What's the deal with New Zealand? are there lots of classic cars rolling around on the streets there? I just sold a 1970 fairlady 240z rally clock to a fellow in Auckland. He's doing a complete restoration on it.
Jeff, surely raising the cam towers, as you have done, will decrease the valve lift?! Or has your new cam profile compensated for that?
It has all been compensated for. It is a common mod ;)
Excuse my ignorance Jeff, but when does the cam chain get installed? Obviously before the tappet cover, but ... Cheers Peter
That is the next step. I have to go through and set all the timing, which I will tackle next week.
Good work Jeff. My sisters head gasket has just gone on her 1.6 tdci and after watching you I am thinking... how hard can it be..... only thing I don’t have is a torque wrench 🤔
If you are just removing and replacing, as long as there is not a reason it has blown, like corrosion around water galleries, I don't think it is too difficult, but this is the first one I have done, so get some advice first.
Andrew if you’re going to attempt to do the head gasket your self before you start get a workshop manual. There is a wooden wedge you need to make to slide into the timing chain to stop the chain tensioner from falling out and possibly dropping down into the sump.
As it is here only car I think I will let a professional sort it out ;) I think I need to get a project car of my own to play with ;)
It is easy to do you just got to make the wedge and dont forget to put it in.
Great progress Jeff!
Why 5 old spark plugs and one new? Why not all 6 new?
he has only done that as a temporary measure to block the holes and less risk of new plugs being damaged
As Paul said. The one 'new' one is just the one that was still in it from CCing the heads.
Great progress, where did you get that tap wrench? I’ve been looking for a decent one for ages, what make is it?
Tap wrench? Do you mean the torque wrench adapter that fits on a regular ratchet? That is a Toolpro item from Supercheap.
Home Built By Jeff 4:21 in the wrench that holds the tap
Ahh, that is in the tap and die set I have. I can't remember the brand sorry.
Never seen that issue with valve cover not sitting right... weird. How thick are those shims?
1.8mm. I think the gasket should be enough.
Are your valve springs after market not STD ones , as they look very compressed
They are standard. That is one thing I have to check to make sure they are not going into bind. I forgot that step, thanks.
your 72 cam has 495 thou lift , std springs are only good for 460 thou lift . too soft
your now faster opening and closing ramps will cause valve float
robwhite240z and with what look like 7mm lash pads in standard retainers = disaster. He would have been better to put the longer valves in it to compensate for the small base circle cam then spring it up accordingly plus fit thinner lash pads. Either that or fit high top retainers. This head should be coming back off to be rectified before start up because it won’t last long.
I just checked and the springs are a long way to bind. At max lift there is at least 2mm between each coil, so at a guess they would need to compress at least another 8-10mm to bind.
Home Built By Jeff what seat and open pressures????
The trick would be not find bolts that are just 1.5mm longer but too long and cut them down to length...
the letter at the end refers to a Rambler Javelin
maybe you need the later rocker with just NISSAN, it's a lot squarer
The gasket is pretty thick. I think its because he has no gasket on it yet
Just looked at again. There is two different cams in Datsun heads internal oiling hollow cam with holes at the base of the lobes
or external oiling with a spray bar . Both is good ,one is OK . but you have neither of these, real bad . will last about 5 mins tops
Easiest fix is to find a set of spray bar towers and spray bar
I will definitely look into that!
I was pretty sure it was internally oiled, and I looked back at it and it is... phew.
Hi! I’m 17 years old, and am looking for my first (JDM) car! I would love the 240z but in the Netherlands they are expensive to buy second handed (20.000€~)! Anyone great suggestions?:) As for this video really loving the content the Datsun😍!
datsun12oY
Hi Ruben. I am not sure what is available near you, but there are a lot of other Datsun models to choose from, as well as a bunch of others.
Ruben Nabi I suggest you join as many Z clubs on the internet as you can. Most Z owners have more than one Z. But the wife wants one gone to unclutter the garage or back yard.
Also even where you live , you might be surprised to find someone nearby with a project car under a cover or garage.
I have found many cars in the same area I live I NEVER SAW !
BUT ENDED UP BEING NEARBY.
Join lots of clubs talk to everybody you meet about your Z dream car. You never know who has a uncle, brother, friend or knows someone , that knows somebody. That will give you a lead on your dream Z.
I have found many cars hidden away by "TALKING" to anybody and everybody about my dream car.
Also get a picture of your dream Z hang it on your wall , make it your wall paper or screen saver , see your self washing and driving it.
The universe will bring it to you.
I have looked for all my dream cars this way and they all found ME !
Dream a Dream, come true!
The money and the way will just come together for you just want it chant it dream it, IT WILL COME.
Ninja 1082 Thank you very much!:)
Home Built By Jeff at the moment the Z models are he easiest Datsuns to get but the most expensive ones. Basically I am open to any jdm sports brand/ model! I will look of there are any other Datsun models available for a lower price!:) Thank you very much sir!
I'd probably knock out the cover a little to give it the clearance
the rubber gasket should be enough
Jeff....uhm....Ill be very honest.I was so thoroughly excited about the motor going together.
Uhm .....then Mrs Jeff shows up
And I found myself more excited and bedazzled...than the motor...
Sorry...man...
PS that valve cover ? Come off that motor? I have yet to see that.
I know the gasket is thick but?
But I found this link mentioning valve covers that dont fit in this thread half way down
www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/19264-valve-cover-differences/
It is because I raised the cam towers. I think the gasket should do it though.
Home Built By Jeff one of mine has the tower spacers no clearance issues. I think that link covers some issues I didnt know before.
Should have painted the block ;-)
I did, a few episodes back ;)
First to comment! :)
