Bittersweet maybe. Fast car is about a cycle of poverty and substance abuse that a girl thinks she can escape in her boyfriends fast car. But in the end she is destined to repeat the cycle.

Sorry folks this is not a sweet song its about multi generational poverty fueled by alcoholism. The story is about a young girl with an alcoholic dead beat dad. She drops out of high school to care for him after her mother leaves, while she and her boyfriend live in a shelter. Her boyfriend refuses to get a job while she's working for minimum wage in market. The only temporary refuge she had was riding around in her boyfriend's car. At the end she has becomes her mother, desperate with a dead beat alcoholic boyfriend. The song is a masterpiece and Tracy Chapman is a national treasure.
