Thanks for the updated info. Looking forward for a sunny weekend to clean up my Weber grill. I have plenty of charcoal from last season. I'm up in NY.
Hello Israel. No problem. Thank you for watching. Take care.
Very helpful video! Love the time you spend on the video production of your videos.
Thanks Matt. I add all the b-roll just so folks don’t have to look at me for too long! Thanks for watching I appreciate you noticing the effort.
Johnny very well done review you gave amazing tips for reasons for buying the different types of grill grates loving the thick heavy cast-iron
Thanks Jeff.
Great video, mate.
Loved the technical detail as well as the usage based comments - can't rotate. Will be following in future.
Thanks for covering smashburgers on the GrillGrates too, I had been specifically wondering about that.
Hello Aiden. Thanks for watching and welcome to my channel!
Wow that was a comprehensive overview of those grates. Also nice closeups, I felt like ant man. If I had to drink every time I heard grill grates, it would be days of drunk. Awesomely done Johnny!
Hey Charlie! Yeah... especially on the GrillGate..grill grates...LOL. Take care.
Thanks for your input. I'm a dedicated weber kettle fan but I am also a fabrication guy. 17 years with my Weber and replacing it from wear and tear. I'm impressed with your breakdown of all of the products.
Thank you. I appreciate you watching.
Quite informative. Cheers, Johnny!
Hello Dwayne. Thanks for coming by.
Really nice in depth video Johnny 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks JB!
Awesome comparison! Nicely Done!
Thanks! 👍 Tom I appreciate you watching.
The welds on the killa grilla grills are called spot welds where two pieces are press together and the spot welder machine forks are placed one on top and the other on the bottom of each other the a blast of electricity to weld both parts together very strong with very minimal heat and wala two pierces welded in one second kinda clean and done. Hope this help. Charlie
P.S.cast iron is the way to go to help with flare ups place a 3/16 plate with holes like the old smoky coal grate #22 over the fire wright under the grate flare ups solved. Keepem coming Johnny.
Hey Charles. Thanks for the info. I like the cast iron myself. Thank, I appreciate you watching.
Tac weld
Hey Johnny! Nice review. I just used my homemade steak grate in a video last night. I clean mine the same way Kosmo does. When you're done cooking on them flip them over and let the fire clean them. Mine are made out of steel so I have to keep them oiled up pretty good. Have a great weekend brother.
Hello Ron. I have not watched that one yet. I also do some burn off after each cook... but I also clean before each cook also... that’s just what I do though not sure if it is necessary but it make me feel comfortable.
Great, in-depth comparison Johnny👍
Thanks Bobbi!
Great comparison. I had a old STOK grill with a removable center section (like the Weber one) but they were cast iron. I never knew anything about seasoning cast iron or such back then and I only used it about once every few months. The outside part I still have as it’s in good shape and fits the center accessories and fits my kettle. That grill came with a VORTEX style center section but it was wider on top. I usually cooked on just that center section only and that middle cast iron grate took a beating with all that heat and it only lasted a few years before before chunks of grate started ending up on my food. I tossed the center section. I should probably season up the outer section just to preserve it a bit better. It’s sitting in my shed so the light rust hasn’t gotten worse. They grill is long gone...but the accessories it came with are nice. I don’t know if the STOK brand is still around.
Hello Carlos. I think STOK is still at round. After hurricane Harvey my cast iron grates sat in flood water for a few days... which is rising salt water... they were ruined because of that. The set you see in the video are the ones I got after I got settled in from all the ‘stuff’. I do enjoy them. Take care Carlos.
This is awesome; I have a killa grilla and I was thinking of getting grill grates since the killa grilla doesn’t do an all over sear as well as stock grates. If you had to guess, do you think the half moon will have issues fitting between the killa grilla handles? Since I plan to mainly use the flat side, I’m guessing I’d have to rotate them slightly as shown in the vid…
Since this video I bought the half moon for my weber... the handles are not an issue however it does not fit between the hinges... so you will have to use it on the opposite side of the door. You will still have to turn it so that the grates don't fall between the grates... check out my smash burger video using GrillGrates. I show the configuration there.
Great info. Thanks
Hey Adrian. thanks for watching.
I got killa grilla grates for my Weber 18 (fits wsm too)
Weber 22
AND ordered the 26 inch grate
They are really nice grates. Let me know if you like the 26 when you get it.
I've been using the Cray Cort cast iron and GrillGrate grates for 3 years. The Cray Cort, I really like them. I bought a few accessories for it. Two griddle plates to use half of it as a griddle, the sauce pan and the vegetable pan. I've kept it outside in the spring, summer, and fall and had no issues with it. But then again, I was using it a few times a week. I would put oil on before each cook. I noticed that they cook food so much better than the stainless steel grates. I also got the Cray Cort set for my Jumbo Joe with two griddle inserts. They cook really well. They are heavy and seem pretty well built. I only use them at home though because they are heavy.
The GrillGrate grates, I bought the set for my Smokey Joe. I pretty much only use it on the SJ to be able to use the full cooking surface without worry about a hot/cool zone. It works out pretty good. Amazing grill marks. I doubt I'll ever get the full set for my 22 as I don't need it.
Never used the Killa Grilla grates. If/when I use stainless steel grates, I just stick to the ones that came with the grill.
Hello PartyUpLive. Absolutely! If you use the craycort grates regularly and put a little oil on before and after the cook you won’t have any issues. I do like the stainless steel it makes clean up really easy.
can you use a vortex with cray cort
I have theMallory cast iron grill grate.and the aluminum grill grates.Love them both, the flat side of the Grill Grates come in handy and if I want to sear something without getting flame kissed the Grill Grates work good for that.I have a friend building me a custom grate from cast iron that the center can be removed or put in the center of my Weber premium grate. After every cook I just spray mine with non stick oil and always wipe with grape seed oil before cooking,so I have had no rust issues, but I do 99% of my cooking with cast iron used to taking care of it.I have some 80+ year old skillets that belonged to my grandma.
Hello Steve. Sounds like you have a great cast iron care routine going on. I hear good things about the Mallory grates... but didn't know about them until after I purchased the Craycort grill grates. Take care and thanks for watching.
View to a grill I’m the same I bought the Mallory before I knew about the Graycort, my only dislike of the Mallory is where the wings attach to the center piece it can mess up your grill marks on a bigger piece of meat and they say it shipped at 27 lbs it is heavy. In the process of building a wood cooking station for both my Weber kettle and WSM.Your review was very interesting,I went with the half moon shape Grill Grate.I do believe I saw a Grill Grate brush available now for cleaning I just use the included spatula it works fine.Im glad I ran across your channel.🔥👍
Grate video Johnny!
Hello Oso! LOL!... I knew someone would do it!
Gets comfortable this is going to be good!
Yep!
Nice review...appreciated !
Thanks for watching!
I used a coat hanger and attached my grill grates to a cheap grate. Makes them stay together MUCH better.
I bet that works well. Do you find yourself using the GrillGrates a lot?
@@Viewtoagrill Not really, I bet I could use them more but I got them for SCA comps
Spot welding , it melts two pieces of steel together ! We used them in Highschool in the Metal Shop . Now they have portable welding machines that are easy to carry around .
Thanks.
Haven’t used any of those grill grates. But I’m considering the Malory cast iron grill grate for my Weber kettle. Do you have any experience with that brand? They claim to be made in the USA.
I do not have any experience with those grates. I believe ‘cooking with Ry’ uses them though if you want to take a look at his channel.
Great review! The Craycort GrillGrate might need to be my next purchase. Love the Cast Iron.
Hey Brian. Just know that it is high maintenance spray it with canola oil before and after every use... or it will rust... and you will have to work hard to restore it.
@@Viewtoagrill Thanks. Maybe I will wait until I am more seasoned using my Weber grill. The grill grate the Master Touch comes with is a bit heavier and more durable than my last Weber I used to own. Maybe I will stick with the Weber one for now. I couldn't have done it without ya. Thanks
Can confirm, it is a massive PITA to restore back to useable condition if you let it go. I found my Craycort went rusty over the winter because I got lazy in the fall and skipped seasoning a few times. It took me ages to strip it and reseason, like days, it's a very complicated shape to work with. I will never let it go again, ever!
had the craycorts. they were awesome, turned into a pain in the butt. i gave them to a friend. replaced with killa grilla.
I really like the Killa Grilla Grill grates. Unfortunately , they guy that made them retired... and the company closed.
Hey Johnny,
I do not have the Killa Grilla grates but I am glad u addressed the issue of the handles sticking down for turning, have u ground those down yet?
Hello. I little bit of grinding before they send it out will go a long way... defiantly. If you don't mind telling me your first name I would like to call you by that... I will do my best to remember. Thanks!

Nice work
Thanks!
Love my Killa Grilla SNS grate! Second one I've ordered as my ex got my first one lol I love them so much I'm going to get the charcoal grate too although it seems like a complete waste of money having the set seems appealing lol. That and I'll never have to replace either :)
Hello Steve. I enjoy using the Killa Gtilla grate. That’s things are built to last and you should never have to replace them... unless your ex gets it!
@@Viewtoagrill indeed, I went with Killa Grilla as well, both for the grill grate and charcoal grate
Heh. Nice Buc-ees cup! Hope I get back to Texas one of these days so I can go to Buc-ee's and then have dinner at the Hard 8.
Hey John! I live about 5 minutes from a Buc-ees. Texans love going there too! Best place for snacks and gas plus a ton of other stuff like B&B charcoal and offset smokers!
I believe it's known as a spot weld it is commonly used for batteries like 18650 lipos
Thanks Jeremy.
Probably a spot or a fusion weld.
Thanks Dash. I will look up both of those.
I think the weldings are mig tac weld or tig at the ends I could be wrong about the tig and in the middle between grate to grate it is spot welding since you need to apply pressure and heat to make both material weld to each other. thanks and sorry
Hey Tino. Thanks for watching.
It's called "Resistance Welding" and is as good as it's quality control is. Meaning it can be great! Or super crappy. But that is what that process of welding is called.
Thanks Gus.
Johnny, I think the name of the grill grate weld is called a tack weld. They are used for lite work or to hold something in place until a reinforced weld can be done.
Thanks for all you do !
Thanks Niagra!
Nice friend
Thank you.
friend what is the name of that accessory that shows at minute 7:07..
That is the GrillGrate grill grate.
I’m stuck between getting a cast iron grate or the SNS spin grates 🤔
I will say that the cast iron is my favorite... but there are a lot of good reasons not to get it...rusting and high maintenance...
@@Viewtoagrill I kind of want to get the sns grate to go with the slow n sear, but love cast iron too, I just got their new cast iron drip pan in the mail yesterday it’s no joke
@@Southjerseysmokin Get the Killa Grilla SNS grates, besides the spinning feature it's much nicer. I never end up spinning my grates so it works "grate" for me ;)
Spot welding (automated) is what it’s called
Thanks!
Didn’t know grill grates sells a single piece half moon for the Weber Kettle. That’s pretty cool as I’ve always just used 2 of the 3 to cover one side. Feel like having 1 solid piece would work nicer.
I have not checked the line up in a while... they are always adding new things.
@@Viewtoagrill can you use vortex with Craycort or slow n sear without damaging grates
@@626robby you will have to re-season the grates a lot because it will burn off the seasoning quite a bit.
I believe that weld is a spot weld
Thanks Tom!
Hey Johnny my family came to the same conclusion as your family, you get more flavor with cast iron grates then you do with grill grates.
I use the cast iron grill grates a few times a week.. I love them. Take care Charles.
Would you recommend 1 half moon or 2 halves moon
Just one.
@@Viewtoagrill Thank you
The reason why is because of two zone cooking… the hot side will be the side with the half moon… where you will be cooking. Cool side does not need the the GrillGrates.
That type of weld name is called Spot Weld
Hello Charlie. Thanks!
I'm not a welder but I think it's electric spot welding. Something like that.
Hello. Electric spot weld.. awesome! Thanks.
You mention that nothing builds up over the slow n sear- what would happen if you rotated every cook? Would that be enough to prevent the bottom build up? I’m a little afraid of the maintenance...
I switch out which grates go over the slow 'n sear ... I do rotate the Craycort occasionally but not every time. I'll start rotating every use and see how that turns out... good idea. They are high maintenance... I cook on them 2, 3 and sometimes 4 times a week... so, I keep them in good shape because of the use I get out of them.
I had surgery in December and could not lift anything over 5 pounds for 4 weeks... so I went 4 weeks without grilling.. By the time I could get to them there was some rust... but I cleaned them up well and re-seasoned them. While they are sitting not being used closing the vents helps keep a little moisture out... but they will still rust. Take care Jody.
Kingsford seems to be the winner hands down as it’s half the price as B&B on Amazon.
Oh yeah, B&B is WAY over priced on Amazon. Try Academy.
Villa maybe spot welled.
Hello John. Thanks!
Spot resistance welding
Thanks Nick!
Spotwelding tack welding
Thanks Howard!
I wouldn't be concerned about the spacing on the Grill Grates. Competition steak grillers use Grill Grates and win.
That is a good point Rob. I do use the GrillGrate grill grates in my SCA competitions.
NICE VIDEO, THANKS FOR SHARING. HOPE TO SEE MORE INTERESTING VIDEO IN YOUR CHANNEL. SEE YOU AROUND !!!!LIKE 43
Thanks!
The grill grates make awesome smash burgers. I think even better than the griddle.
Hey Katz! GrillGrates v Griddle!!!
That Grillgrates half moon joint for the kettle is a no BRAINER...
Hello William. Thanks!
Grill grate spatula says made in China
Yes, the spatula is made in China. The GrillGrates are not… at least not at the time.
I've always wanted a cast iron grill for my kettle. Not a fan of the slow and sear, just seems unnecessary. But I apologize, I'm so " old school " that I'm not even old school, hell I'm old fashioned. Long before most of these after market accessories, some of them good, we old timers figured out how to do with out. Bank all the brickets to one side. Or place in a disposable pan. Place a full pan with water and meat over that. Dang I'm just going on to much here. Bottom line your video is great. Maybe someday I'll spend the money for a cast iron grate.🌤👍😁🍻
Hello Victor. it is important to know how to use the WK without all the accessories for sure. I try to make a point to show some videos without it... but honestly I like the damn thing! I just think it keeps your coal nice, tidy, and organized.
@@Viewtoagrill oh I hope I wasn't misunderstood. There are so many fun gadgets out there. I can light a fire in the woods during a great storm using just one match. And yet I have a grill gun, love the damm thing 😁🔥. I really like Cajon Bandit, my two WSM'S would be naked without them ( why can't Webber make a better door? I mean really? So if I came across in a negative manner I apologize, that was not my intention. I have a bit of a odd sense of, let's call it " humor ".I have to get to work, have a great day 🌤.
@@victorbenner539 I did not take it negatively, no apology necessary. We are just talking here.
