Just want to thank Larry and all the members for the many ideas I have been able to glean.Being retired on Soc Sec and having $32.78 disposable income a month I was able to construct mini kiddie pools for 20 plants for a total cost of $8.92.....
I use a rope tied in knot. In bottom of bucket and fray the other end a bit and place in water instead of basket. Works great roots run down rope almost like hydroponics system.
I been growing my own vegetables with this system for over 5 years now. I love it. I have grown all kinds of different varieties of vegetables. It's amazing. Thank You Larry Hall.
The white buckets last maybe two or three years (where I live in Alabama) before they deteriorate in the sun. Black buckets last much longer. They contain carbon black which increases the U.V. resistance of the plastic. Results may vary by how close you are to the equator. Some plants don't do well in five gallon buckets because they need more surface area for their roots to have access to aerated soil near the surface. Wal-Mart bags (as shown in the video) are a cheap alternative. They only last two or three years where I live in the deep south, but as they only cost 50 cents each, that's an affordable loss. An additional advantage to Wal-Mart bags is that their porosity gives them a much greater effective surface areas for roots as air can penetrate the sides of the bags. So for plants that have to have a larger area to grow, Wal-Mart bags (or Target or Costco . . . whatever) will often do the job where a five gallon bucket will not. My own personal experience is that beans and squash don't do well in five gallon buckets for this reason. Store bags hold a surprising amount of potting mix. Wal-Mart also sells large, black storage containers with lids (which I don't use) for $5. I've been experimenting with these but it's too soon to tell how well they hold up in the sun.
We have that issue here. The Arizona sun destroys many plastics in very short order, so thanks for the tip about black vs white buckets! Also, the tip on the Walmart bags. I never even thought of using those!
i built one back in 2010 and over 6 or 7 years it just got bigger and bigger until the last season i grew it and it became such a thick jungle it took me months to clear it our after it finally collapsed. 10 rows 9 buckets each, cherry tomatoes, grew up the string to about 8 feet then grew back down and suckers everywhere. whew, took lots of patience to clear it up after the freeze wiped them out and they sat until spring. i think i mastered it except for building a tulle enclosure (wedding veil fabric) around the whole place from those blasted leaf footed bugs. its been years since i last did it, after watching a lot of vids today im inspired, time to revisit it again!
I have used a similar method to this with great success. I figure that watering every day is to be avoided and so capillary watering is the answer, but I felt that feeding should be in my control, so I use an inert matrix to plant in and put soluble fertiliser in the water at the start. Later (e.g. when tomato trusses have formed) I feed from the top also with liquid fertiliser. Works very well. As I said, this capillary way of watering is maintenance free, but I use a solid top with holes in... Prevents excessive evaporation and prevents mosquitoes.
After finding my cattle guard-hoop housed garden obliterated by pine trees from the storm a few weeks ago, once I understood what I was looking at, I just turned and walked away. I’m ready to start again. I’m IN! WONDERFUL video THANK YOU! I am SUPER looking forward to a fresh start with a whole new system! Maybe build a lattice box around each length! 🌞 🐦 🌱 🌶 🌸🥳
My seeds are sprouting!! I've wanted a garden for the longest time and now thanks to the gutter garden concept I have one Thanks Larry for all your encouragement. Got sweet corn, yellow and acorn squash, zucchini, cucumber, tomatoes, spinach, kale collard greens and green beans. I'm going to join your gutter garden group.
Today Oct 21, 2016. Harvested some Tomatoes and Bell Peppers today. Just a few left then I will feed the plants to the compost pile. We live near Fredericksburg, TX. I switched to the kiddy pool Walmart bag stem for my fall veggies and some 5 gal buckets. Like the air pruning pool system better. Gonna start building my rain gutter system next week to get ready for planting in very early March. This video has me even more excited to get it going. Thanks, and you always do a great job Larry.
One of my favorite things to do in the garden is water by hand, I grow in large containers filled with compost, aged cow manure and plenty of worms. I feed the worms they feed the plants. Being attentive and seeing the ecology is half the fun. My elderly friend would love this though, thank you for sharing.
Larry Hall... My husband is not going to happy with you. All I wanted to do was find a way to grow my garden in affordable containers and the rabbit trail brought me to you. and now he has lots of projects to do with me!!! I will try one this year! THANK YOU! HERE'S TO HOPING GARDENING IN TX GETS EASIER!
@BoxingFanAZ M.O.B I did aquaponics for about 2 years, and it got to be very labor-intensive. So I've gone back to dirt and am working on a new area. Arizona just isn't too kind to plants that you grow for food.
TheLongjohntim Way to go driver, post back and let me know how it works for you, I may give it a try myself next year. I only get home 1-2 weekends a month so if it works I'd like to know.
Mr Hall this is the vidio that started it all for Me long time ago . Yes, I have learnt a lot since, thank goodness : ) I appreciate your Greeting so I could find You took a long While as well : ) THAX LARRY HALL FROM BRAINERD MINNESOTA, PEACE : )
Thanks a lot Larry Hall, What a beautiful system. Getting prepare to do my own gutter system. You are a great teacher. No need to go for College!!!! You are the U of MN!!!
Wow thank you larry you just changed my whole DAY!!! ,, and garden for 2020 !!! which is a big deal as you can imagine with the country unstable like it is. Thanks lots of helpful tips with the Mal-Wart bags and the gutter i like it ive seen other similar techniques but you seem so sure that you have an amazing garden. You arent trying to sell anyone you are trying to share what you have figured out . How Amazing. Thanks again
I've developed my own version of this with one change. In the base of my container I cut a round hole about 2 inches across. I then insert some felt that you can get off Amazon etc. The felt used for craft use and every 5 year old making costumes. The sheets I got were about 12 inches square and came in an assortment of colours. Once the felt is inserted through the hole I then force it down about 2-3 inches (this will be dipping into the drain gutter) then fill it with compost to achieve the same capillary action described in the video. Make sure there are no air pockets as this will make it less effective. I even re-use the felt the following year. One tip I would like to pass on. If in a greenhouse make sure you cover the exposed areas between the pots to stop excessive algae growth and to limit the amount of fly larvae that will appear. During the year of my first attempt my water turned a very dark dark green for a few weeks then cleared again but I had hundreds of 'midgies' flying around my greenhouse.
Same principle is used with the Octopot system, but what I think makes them better is using the fabric pots that allow the plant roots to air prune themselves instead of being against plastic walls. I chose this route for growing cannabis specifically because I’m gone 5 days a week and just have to fill reservoir with water/nutrient mix. Over and under watering is one of the biggest problems new cannabis growers face.
out here in Arizona you must add vermiculite to the potting mix, potting mix alone isn't enough for the cappilary action due to the dry weather. Otherwise works like a dream.
My first gutter garden is going great! Every thing seems to be growing well! lettuce, Roma and bigboy tomatoes acorn and summer squash, zucchini cucumber kale spinach collard greens yellow, red, green peppers sweetcorn have 14 buckets and I'm having a ball.
I got my float valves yesterday (2) you would have thought it was Christmas! Got everything set up planted some seeds, can't wait to see what happens got 12 buckets going to add two more! Thanks for your earlier comment had a really bad day and it was the pick me up I needed. I will let you know how it turns out.
I am in Las Vegas and use PVC pipe, cap the ends drill some holes. I cut lid in half with a hole in center for easy removal and can enlarge hole as plant grows. Reduces evap. Jalapeno, Bells and Marijuana.

...adapted this gutter system in my poly house...love the set it and forget it idea too...just add a little food into the gutter...if you like...auto fill is the best but hand fill works as well...
This is great, the Earthbox is based on this exact design. I will be installing one of these this spring. Automatic watering is cheap and will change your gardening life if you don't use it.
Rain gutter system is the combination of 2 hydro methods with only the idea of a gutter to hold water. What hydro mehtods you may ask... It is a gravity feed system which is used passively around the world, and the wicking system which is primarily used with rockwool slabs. IN fact the rockwool slabs are placed into a 40" long gutter. Used by commercial farmers all over the world.
this gives me many ideas. id use rain barrels to water, and maybe a sealed pipe in place of open gutters that collect dirt and skeeters. im still searching for a repurposed material to use as wicks, net pots cost too much, im a scavenger and make everything for free, or very cheap, and it needs to run off grid and free to be a real choice for me
Shut it down in mid August because it was getting cold. Wow, you have my sincere envy. Here, it's in the mid to upper 90s in mid August. I've been watching a bunch of your videos. Very good information, thanks. Caio.
I love your unselfish attitude to getting everyone to try this system, Larry. Keep up the good work. Those with their heads in the sand who say that everything must be grown in the ground...well what can you say about them ...apart from that they need to come into the 21st century...lol.
One issue needs to be pointed out, you must level the gutter to ensure water is even throughout. A 3" net pot is very small for a rootball to establish say for a tomato plant, and other veggies!
Thanks Larry. After some research about Hydroponics, sub irrigation I got to your videos. I just finished my first sub watering plastic box, but your system is right next on my 2do list. Thanks for the information and greetings from Thailand.
No dragging hose all around the yard. Awesome! Larry, saw some folks had fruit trees in their buckets. Not much snow here, in southern MN, this winter and it was tough on some plants. I can see how this would possibly let us grow a bush or dwarf fruit tree from zones 5 or 6, just haul it in somewhere protected for the winter. Maybe I'll get a peach tree yet.
You could add compost tea to the gutter perhaps. And nice thing about this method is you dont have to water so frequent. The roots pull up just what they need
If i am not mistaking, you could probably just fill the gutters up daily with a hose if you didn't want to spend the money for the valves, thats an idea. So essentially you can buy the gutters, 2x4, nails and buckets...correct
But I enjoy watering, inspecting, trimming and talking to my plants lol This systems seems costly too but am glad it works for a lot of people. Is basically is a self-watering system. I would think this takes the joy out of gardening for a true gardener.
I just stumbled across this posting so I'm not sure how old it is. Wouldn't the Kratky method be a little easier? No need for soil or pumps. Just the nutrient solution in your container, the mesh cup in the lid, and the capillary action. You could bypass the gutter entirely. Great looking garden! Thanks for posting.
I like the idea of incorporating the Alaska grow buckets into your idea...whoever thought of those Alaska grow buckets got that right too....air pruning works too by the look of it.
Mr Hall : ) this is how I did this I got the float a buddy ordered two give one to me and I got a four inch sewer pipe teen feet long cut In 3 pieces capped the ends cut one foot off for the float cap used 2 pvc 45s in the corners and made a U watered it with a 50 gallons blue recycle can
Incredible! Imagining tier after tier of these rain gutter growth systems growing tons of veggies in a very small space at home. Homesteading on steroids, ya'll..... Think of it, and act accordingly!
Wow wow and wow! I will be attempting my first garden this year and this seems like an easy way to go and will easily fit in my small yard. And it seems it would be easier on my already bad back and knees. Great share I'm gonna try it.
i started a dual bag system using the larger smart and final shopping bags using some 4x4 square frame and sonblack plastic sheeting for the water tub. We shall see.
Rest in Peace, Larry. I'm so glad these videos are here, I want to build some of this stuff for myself.

robert kinney that’s really cool. Did they produce well?
Your enthusiasm is authentic in getting this system out to the public. Anyone who can do this should do this. Thanks a bunch!
I believe the reason it works so well is that water from below encourages root development...

It's a unique and brilliant idea on container gardening. Minimum pests, all organic, and the harvest will be amazing in such a small footprint.

Mr Hall : ) this is how I did this I got the float a buddy ordered two give one to me and I got a four inch sewer pipe teen feet long cut In 3 pieces capped the ends cut one foot off for the float cap used 2 pvc 45s in the corners and made a U watered it with a 50 gallons blue recycle can
Does the barrel have enough water pressure to operate the float valve?
Incredible! Imagining tier after tier of these rain gutter growth systems growing tons of veggies in a very small space at home. Homesteading on steroids, ya'll..... Think of it, and act accordingly!
Thanks much
Silver Schooner did you do it yet?
I'm adding something similar to this mixed with Back To Eden to go along with my indoor microgreens and hydroponics for my start-up company
Wow wow and wow! I will be attempting my first garden this year and this seems like an easy way to go and will easily fit in my small yard. And it seems it would be easier on my already bad back and knees. Great share I'm gonna try it.
