Just want to thank Larry and all the members for the many ideas I have been able to glean.Being retired on Soc Sec and having $32.78 disposable income a month I was able to construct mini kiddie pools for 20 plants for a total cost of $8.92.....
I been growing my own vegetables with this system for over 5 years now. I love it. I have grown all kinds of different varieties of vegetables. It's amazing. Thank You Larry Hall.

We've got too many skeeters in Florida to have any standing water like that. That's why I'm exploring a modified wicking bed system using kiddie pools, french drain, and sand as a subirrigation station where I can just set down cloth grow bags filled with a soilless potting mix as described here. Very similar in concept. I'm looking forward to it.
Same here. No open water containers because of mosquitoes. I'm planning to do something similar to this with downspout instead of open gutter, with holes drilled for the water access for each plant. Avoids having the exposed parts of the gutter for mosquitoes.
I use a rope tied in knot. In bottom of bucket and fray the other end a bit and place in water instead of basket. Works great roots run down rope almost like hydroponics system.
My seeds are sprouting!! I've wanted a garden for the longest time and now thanks to the gutter garden concept I have one Thanks Larry for all your encouragement. Got sweet corn, yellow and acorn squash, zucchini, cucumber, tomatoes, spinach, kale collard greens and green beans. I'm going to join your gutter garden group.
Today Oct 21, 2016. Harvested some Tomatoes and Bell Peppers today. Just a few left then I will feed the plants to the compost pile. We live near Fredericksburg, TX. I switched to the kiddy pool Walmart bag stem for my fall veggies and some 5 gal buckets. Like the air pruning pool system better. Gonna start building my rain gutter system next week to get ready for planting in very early March. This video has me even more excited to get it going. Thanks, and you always do a great job Larry.
THIS IS THE BEST! I built one (3 - 20 foot lengths in a "E" shape at a rental house I occupied. Then in the chaos of the next year when I bought my house I just stuck my plants in the dirt..... never again! I grow tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, pole beans stuck in shared pots and basil at base of every tomato plant successfully in the gutter system. My peas did not like it...but the loss was soon forgotten big time! Companion planting is great. This year will set up again, and also will try pumpkin and other squash, more lettuce and also flowers. Also I fill a 50 gal barrel about once every 3 days at peak summer and use that as my resivoir. Running dry for a day won't kill anything either.
i built one back in 2010 and over 6 or 7 years it just got bigger and bigger until the last season i grew it and it became such a thick jungle it took me months to clear it our after it finally collapsed. 10 rows 9 buckets each, cherry tomatoes, grew up the string to about 8 feet then grew back down and suckers everywhere. whew, took lots of patience to clear it up after the freeze wiped them out and they sat until spring. i think i mastered it except for building a tulle enclosure (wedding veil fabric) around the whole place from those blasted leaf footed bugs. its been years since i last did it, after watching a lot of vids today im inspired, time to revisit it again!
thank you for sharing this technique of Plant it and forget it. Indeed it is very tough to plant on the soil, I have very hard time to grow to water and to control the pests. I will try to do this in a small set up. thank you Sir Larry! God Bless!
Hey first year container gardener this year. I grew up eating my dads garden. And with his ALZ he can't do it. So this year I was going to just plant 1 tomato plant in a hanger and stumbled into container gardening on accident. 5 tomato plants, one cherry tomato, 3 cucumbers and 1 pepper. So far so good. Looking to do it better next year. Your videos and others have been a big help. Thank you. Will probably do a rain gutter for my mom for everything and a smaller one for my small containers and a 2 bucket system for my 5 gallon buckets. I'm in an apartment so far and the buckets will be easier to store. Again you and others on you tube rock and thanks again.
I have used a similar method to this with great success. I figure that watering every day is to be avoided and so capillary watering is the answer, but I felt that feeding should be in my control, so I use an inert matrix to plant in and put soluble fertiliser in the water at the start. Later (e.g. when tomato trusses have formed) I feed from the top also with liquid fertiliser. Works very well. As I said, this capillary way of watering is maintenance free, but I use a solid top with holes in... Prevents excessive evaporation and prevents mosquitoes.
Thanks a lot Larry Hall, What a beautiful system. Getting prepare to do my own gutter system. You are a great teacher. No need to go for College!!!! You are the U of MN!!!
Larry Hall... My husband is not going to happy with you. All I wanted to do was find a way to grow my garden in affordable containers and the rabbit trail brought me to you. and now he has lots of projects to do with me!!! I will try one this year! THANK YOU! HERE'S TO HOPING GARDENING IN TX GETS EASIER!
@BoxingFanAZ M.O.B I did aquaponics for about 2 years, and it got to be very labor-intensive. So I've gone back to dirt and am working on a new area. Arizona just isn't too kind to plants that you grow for food.
Amazing !! What I love about this is that it is so simple. Tried it and it works . I love the fact that you can walk away and NOT have to baby sit the garden !

The white buckets last maybe two or three years (where I live in Alabama) before they deteriorate in the sun. Black buckets last much longer. They contain carbon black which increases the U.V. resistance of the plastic. Results may vary by how close you are to the equator. Some plants don't do well in five gallon buckets because they need more surface area for their roots to have access to aerated soil near the surface. Wal-Mart bags (as shown in the video) are a cheap alternative. They only last two or three years where I live in the deep south, but as they only cost 50 cents each, that's an affordable loss. An additional advantage to Wal-Mart bags is that their porosity gives them a much greater effective surface areas for roots as air can penetrate the sides of the bags. So for plants that have to have a larger area to grow, Wal-Mart bags (or Target or Costco . . . whatever) will often do the job where a five gallon bucket will not. My own personal experience is that beans and squash don't do well in five gallon buckets for this reason. Store bags hold a surprising amount of potting mix. Wal-Mart also sells large, black storage containers with lids (which I don't use) for $5. I've been experimenting with these but it's too soon to tell how well they hold up in the sun.
We have that issue here. The Arizona sun destroys many plastics in very short order, so thanks for the tip about black vs white buckets! Also, the tip on the Walmart bags. I never even thought of using those!
Built your system 2 years ago. Live in central Fla. Amazing amount of produce. Fed all the neighbors . best part the following year I had fruit growing again from last year's roots. The soil is literally good for 2 years. No rain all winter so I'm guessing the morning dew started the growing process. I also have the Dutch bucket system using master blend. The gutter soil mixture keeps up with the master blend in the grow time processes. The wick system is nice but the soil mixture is key to the whole build in my opinion. Thx Larry
One of my favorite things to do in the garden is water by hand, I grow in large containers filled with compost, aged cow manure and plenty of worms. I feed the worms they feed the plants. Being attentive and seeing the ecology is half the fun. My elderly friend would love this though, thank you for sharing.
Mr Hall this is the vidio that started it all for Me long time ago . Yes, I have learnt a lot since, thank goodness : ) I appreciate your Greeting so I could find You took a long While as well : ) THAX LARRY HALL FROM BRAINERD MINNESOTA, PEACE : )
Wow thank you larry you just changed my whole DAY!!! ,, and garden for 2020 !!! which is a big deal as you can imagine with the country unstable like it is. Thanks lots of helpful tips with the Mal-Wart bags and the gutter i like it ive seen other similar techniques but you seem so sure that you have an amazing garden. You arent trying to sell anyone you are trying to share what you have figured out . How Amazing. Thanks again
My first gutter garden is going great! Every thing seems to be growing well! lettuce, Roma and bigboy tomatoes acorn and summer squash, zucchini cucumber kale spinach collard greens yellow, red, green peppers sweetcorn have 14 buckets and I'm having a ball.
I got my float valves yesterday (2) you would have thought it was Christmas! Got everything set up planted some seeds, can't wait to see what happens got 12 buckets going to add two more! Thanks for your earlier comment had a really bad day and it was the pick me up I needed. I will let you know how it turns out.
After finding my cattle guard-hoop housed garden obliterated by pine trees from the storm a few weeks ago, once I understood what I was looking at, I just turned and walked away. I’m ready to start again. I’m IN! WONDERFUL video THANK YOU! I am SUPER looking forward to a fresh start with a whole new system! Maybe build a lattice box around each length! 🌞 🐦 🌱 🌶 🌸🥳
TheLongjohntim Way to go driver, post back and let me know how it works for you, I may give it a try myself next year. I only get home 1-2 weekends a month so if it works I'd like to know.
...adapted this gutter system in my poly house...love the set it and forget it idea too...just add a little food into the gutter...if you like...auto fill is the best but hand fill works as well...
out here in Arizona you must add vermiculite to the potting mix, potting mix alone isn't enough for the cappilary action due to the dry weather. Otherwise works like a dream.
I've developed my own version of this with one change. In the base of my container I cut a round hole about 2 inches across. I then insert some felt that you can get off Amazon etc. The felt used for craft use and every 5 year old making costumes. The sheets I got were about 12 inches square and came in an assortment of colours. Once the felt is inserted through the hole I then force it down about 2-3 inches (this will be dipping into the drain gutter) then fill it with compost to achieve the same capillary action described in the video. Make sure there are no air pockets as this will make it less effective. I even re-use the felt the following year. One tip I would like to pass on. If in a greenhouse make sure you cover the exposed areas between the pots to stop excessive algae growth and to limit the amount of fly larvae that will appear. During the year of my first attempt my water turned a very dark dark green for a few weeks then cleared again but I had hundreds of 'midgies' flying around my greenhouse.
This to me is one of your best videos yet... I love the idea of all my tomatoes and peppers being automatically watered... and not having to use good raised bed space for things like beets and carrots and not peppers and tomatoes... Thank you from KC MO for an awesome video and taking the time to share this... YOU DA MAN....
I am in Las Vegas and use PVC pipe, cap the ends drill some holes. I cut lid in half with a hole in center for easy removal and can enlarge hole as plant grows. Reduces evap. Jalapeno, Bells and Marijuana.
No dragging hose all around the yard. Awesome! Larry, saw some folks had fruit trees in their buckets. Not much snow here, in southern MN, this winter and it was tough on some plants. I can see how this would possibly let us grow a bush or dwarf fruit tree from zones 5 or 6, just haul it in somewhere protected for the winter. Maybe I'll get a peach tree yet.
Same principle is used with the Octopot system, but what I think makes them better is using the fabric pots that allow the plant roots to air prune themselves instead of being against plastic walls. I chose this route for growing cannabis specifically because I’m gone 5 days a week and just have to fill reservoir with water/nutrient mix. Over and under watering is one of the biggest problems new cannabis growers face.
this gives me many ideas. id use rain barrels to water, and maybe a sealed pipe in place of open gutters that collect dirt and skeeters. im still searching for a repurposed material to use as wicks, net pots cost too much, im a scavenger and make everything for free, or very cheap, and it needs to run off grid and free to be a real choice for me
I love your unselfish attitude to getting everyone to try this system, Larry. Keep up the good work. Those with their heads in the sand who say that everything must be grown in the ground...well what can you say about them ...apart from that they need to come into the 21st century...lol.
Thanks Larry. After some research about Hydroponics, sub irrigation I got to your videos. I just finished my first sub watering plastic box, but your system is right next on my 2do list. Thanks for the information and greetings from Thailand.
Shut it down in mid August because it was getting cold. Wow, you have my sincere envy. Here, it's in the mid to upper 90s in mid August. I've been watching a bunch of your videos. Very good information, thanks. Caio.
You could add compost tea to the gutter perhaps. And nice thing about this method is you dont have to water so frequent. The roots pull up just what they need
I'm a bit north of you, at Boy River. Deer are murder on the gardens. Raised beds are no challenge for them they just jump on top and start eating. Woodchucks and raccoons too. This might be the ticket if I get it high enough.

This is great, the Earthbox is based on this exact design. I will be installing one of these this spring. Automatic watering is cheap and will change your gardening life if you don't use it.
I just stumbled across this posting so I'm not sure how old it is. Wouldn't the Kratky method be a little easier? No need for soil or pumps. Just the nutrient solution in your container, the mesh cup in the lid, and the capillary action. You could bypass the gutter entirely. Great looking garden! Thanks for posting.
Wow wow and wow! I will be attempting my first garden this year and this seems like an easy way to go and will easily fit in my small yard. And it seems it would be easier on my already bad back and knees. Great share I'm gonna try it.
i started a dual bag system using the larger smart and final shopping bags using some 4x4 square frame and sonblack plastic sheeting for the water tub. We shall see.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video, I'm starting a small pepper farm on a quarter acre of my homestead and since we have a really bad mole/vole problem here we use mostly raised beds. This seems like a perfect solution for us I'll build one and let you know how it works! 👨🌾🌞👍
this is a great sytem im going to try it out might make my own version using pvc water pipe as its firmer and wouldnt need the wood to screw the gutter to for stabilty ill let you know how it worked out
Thanks! One quick question. If you were building one for the 1st time, in July in Missouri, what plants would you start with? I think I want to try maybe 2-3 buckets, see how well I do and then possibly expand it next year.

I like the idea of incorporating the Alaska grow buckets into your idea...whoever thought of those Alaska grow buckets got that right too....air pruning works too by the look of it.
People worry about root rot and the roots of the plants sitting in the water but I use flood tables + pots sitting in the flood tables and the plants (pepper and tomatoes) sit in constant water and never develop any issues.
Rain gutter system is the combination of 2 hydro methods with only the idea of a gutter to hold water. What hydro mehtods you may ask... It is a gravity feed system which is used passively around the world, and the wicking system which is primarily used with rockwool slabs. IN fact the rockwool slabs are placed into a 40" long gutter. Used by commercial farmers all over the world.
Larry I noticed in your video there was a part there where someone was using the blue rain barrels for potatoes...about how many net cups do you place on the bottom of them in order for that to work?
1 net cup per foot! Thanks So Much For Watching The Video! See All My Most Popular Video's By Category On Pinterest! www.pinterest.com/larryhall50/boards/

Fantastic Thanks!
Hi Larry,i have a small first time gutter grow system, things r coming nicely,my question is how do you deal with allege in the rain gutter?
I made a similar system easier tho check it out you can do it anywhere.
Over and under watering is one of the biggest problems new cannabis growers face.

this gives me many ideas. id use rain barrels to water, and maybe a sealed pipe in place of open gutters that collect dirt and skeeters. im still searching for a repurposed material to use as wicks, net pots cost too much, im a scavenger and make everything for free, or very cheap, and it needs to run off grid and free to be a real choice for me
Strawberry baskets from the grocery store?

Look into straw bail gardening as well. I don't have to weed at all, just water.

Containers!!!! This is exactly what I have been looking for.
Thank you!!
Very very interesting system! Do you have insect problems like mosquitoes breeding in the stagnant water ?

ruclips.net/video/BDYJIU2IAJA/видео.html
you can also buy 'mosquito cakes' that look like donuts to put in the water...100% safe
I love your unselfish attitude to getting everyone to try this system, Larry. Keep up the good work. Those with their heads in the sand who say that everything must be grown in the ground...well what can you say about them ...apart from that they need to come into the 21st century...lol.
Nice! Was planning something similar for a balcony self watered garden. But with a wooden trough covered with a liner, wide enough to fit pails.
Just finished mine today. Thanks Larry. RIP

Thanks Larry. After some research about Hydroponics, sub irrigation I got to your videos. I just finished my first sub watering plastic box, but your system is right next on my 2do list. Thanks for the information and greetings from Thailand.
So glad I found your channel. This is an incredibly informative video
Look at my system it’s easier
Shut it down in mid August because it was getting cold. Wow, you have my sincere envy. Here, it's in the mid to upper 90s in mid August.
I've been watching a bunch of your videos. Very good information, thanks. Caio.
Who would dislike this video? So weird. Thanks again Larry!!
Would summer sun make the water too hot for the plants?
I made a similar system easier tho check it out you can do it anywhere. No mosquito problem :) :). Bury my system under ground :)

The idea of not just walking us through steps to create this-is jacked up!
Great idea! Thank you. I will try to build one.

Excellent idea Larry. I will be giving this a try in 2016 if I get too busy this year building raised beds.

OH MY GOD. This is amazing!!!!! I'm going to build this with my aquaponics system
Thanks
Hi Larry. How high is the water in the guttering/how much of the net cup is sitting in water?
I made a similar system easier tho check it out you can do it anywhere. No mosquito problem :) :)
Seems like something that would blend well into my aquaponic gardening ...
Thanks for the look!
JT Bear Did you ever do anything with that? Just curious if you were able to use this information to modify your aquaponics setup.
TheEarthCreature Not yet, not yet ... space is limited in my gardens at the moment but it's still on the 'to try' list!
LOL! I'm just amused who you bump into in the comments of other videos. It's a small world in the RUclips gardening community. :)
@@JTBear did you ever get that sorted? Interesting idea
Well?
Good idea. Make. Sure to add mountain ash etc to make sure your soil has lots of minerals and other nutrients

What do you do about mosquitos?

I love this idea, I'm definitely going to do this
I just stumbled across this posting so I'm not sure how old it is. Wouldn't the Kratky method be a little easier? No need for soil or pumps. Just the nutrient solution in your container, the mesh cup in the lid, and the capillary action. You could bypass the gutter entirely. Great looking garden! Thanks for posting.
Dude... you are on the ball... and I can tell you love to tinker... which is a great this... thanks for all the good videos...

This is so awesome! Thanks for sharing this! I'm hopeful this can help me in the Mohave Desert in Vegas!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video, I'm starting a small pepper farm on a quarter acre of my homestead and since we have a really bad mole/vole problem here we use mostly raised beds. This seems like a perfect solution for us I'll build one and let you know how it works! 👨🌾🌞👍
How did your project go? I'm interested!
Id like to find out more about drip irrigation too.

Just finished my two gutter gutter garden with rain water gathering with 2 30 gallon barrel on a Fiskar diverter. My neighbors are interested.
When they see your results they will be more than interested! Thanks
This would be a good system for lettuce growing tho I would have a little air pump to oxidise the sitting water

It sure is nice hearing that voice again
Thank you for the videos Sir, as a beginning gardener the rain gutter system really seems intriguing. I plan on trying it.
Fantastic Greg! I bet you will Love it!
Thanks! One quick question. If you were building one for the 1st time, in July in Missouri, what plants would you start with? I think I want to try maybe 2-3 buckets, see how well I do and then possibly expand it next year.
Looks awesome. Im going to try this this spring. I live in thief river falls.

I like the idea of incorporating the Alaska grow buckets into your idea...whoever thought of those Alaska grow buckets got that right too....air pruning works too by the look of it.
Hi Larry. I live in MN. I would love to visit you one of this days
People worry about root rot and the roots of the plants sitting in the water but I use flood tables + pots sitting in the flood tables and the plants (pepper and tomatoes) sit in constant water and never develop any issues.
Going to try this with the 4-H horticulture project kids!
You have inspired me! Thats signed, sealed, and delivered! Bright eyed man!

Floaters you can get them at hardware store in the section for toilets or coolers
Larry I noticed in your video there was a part there where someone was using the blue rain barrels for potatoes...about how many net cups do you place on the bottom of them in order for that to work?
1 net cup per foot!
