@@Lifesizemortal Really?! I fount her range of emotion was weak especially for the character but that's probably what most techies are like. Either way I didn't feel for the character.
The core script was okay, but I found it somewhat lacking in it's chose of dialogue, metaphors etc. For example - the big confrontation in ep6 fell flat to me due to lacking metaphors (rolling a pen over a table to explain cause and effect was meh) and the dialogue just felt like catch-up exposition to fill the characters in on shit the audience already knew. The emotional relationship on the porch also felt ridiculous given the circumstance the characters were in.
It was pretty strange. Very longwinded in the middle. Just too many long talks for me. Overall interesting ideas. Last episode kind of made it worthwhile i guess. hmm but man those 4, 5, 6.. even 7 imo.. terrible.
I was never bored during the show but I do agree 4 - 6 felt a little stretched out. It’s what made me think it was originally conceived as a movie. Thanks for watching my review ✌🏻
I also thought this was probably an idea for a movie. Following Garland's awful experience with the release of Annihilation, he probably reworked this as a series. But honestly, this should have been a 2 hour movie or at least 4-5 episodes maximum Great review, I'll check out your channel 👍
The respect you give us and the story by not blowing plot points or deep character diving, is well received here, thank you. Awesome review, good info. sub'd
Funny Fact: I accidentally watched the finale rather than the first episode. This, I’m gonna blame on BBC IPlayer (In the UK), for the way the episodes are listed. That being said though, the finale was honestly amazing. Even without the other episodes, It would still be amazing as a short film.
Yeah I’ll basically watch anything Garland is attached to. The more I think about this series the better it gets. Might binge it all again 😊 Thanks for checking out my vid ✌🏻
iwatched... Haha, this is pretty much what happened to me too. I watched it, loved it.....and then ever since I cant stop thinking about it. There aren’t many tv shows or films that do that to me. Keep up the great work by the way buddy, very watchable 😉
It really isn't as amazing as you say it is, go watch the first season of Mr. Robot, and then compare it. A lot of the performances are lackluster at best, I would say that the story is the redeeming quality of this show, I rarely watch anything with bad acting in it, but this one got me hooked because of the story.
Nikolai Megdanov I watched Mr. Robot and I am sorry but I much prefer Devs. Personal preference I guess but for me this was just absolutely stunning. 🤷♂️
You were so polite to the main actress. I don't think I've ever seen such a terrible performance before (movies like the room don't count). She was stiff, lifeless, and looked lost most of the time. I'm only half way through and I don't want to finish because she's so bad!
I do really like your style of review, it's polite and to the point, enjoyable. Also it absolutely calmed me down since I was becoming more and more irritated by the good reviews of the series that lead me to watch it. Personally I didn't like it too well except for a few small hints that granted interesting food for thought or showed a character from a new perspective. But this happened so rarely I imagine the whole story would make a pretty good movie actually, but for a series, oof. Though, visually it is pretty nice. And I gotta say I didn't like Mizuno at first either, but her performance became more enjoyable since episode 4, I can absolutely see where you're coming from. Tbh I really really liked her in Maniac so I blame this on devs as a whole which seemed rather bland to me.
I thought it was great, but the main character felt a bit disconnected from the scifi plot for most of the series. In fact her entire plotline was my least favorite part and I just wanted more of the actual devs thing. I agree with you that because the audience get to see so much more than the main character the entire mystery feels more like catching up and isn't giving any revelation to the viewer.
Cool thanks, I wasn’t sure if I made that clear in my review. I did find the way they discover the cover up a bit hokey too. (The digital fire). All in all though I really enjoyed it. Thanks for checking out my review ✌🏻
I like Sonoya, but I'd agree that she wasnt the strongest actor there. Everyone was amazing, even that boy prodigy programer was a female actress. Her character could've been done better
6:14 - This enjoyment tracker is a great idea. Gonna start using it. I often feel like I factor in endings too heavily when I rate stuff, and forget how I felt during the course of the show.
Devs would have benefited from being a movie. Also I wished Devs would have spent more of it’s runtime being clever than trying to prepare me for how clever it was going to be. Perhaps it was never going to work right after watching Dark.
Alex Garland is a monster. He nails every single movie with his insane ideas and complex science-related concepts. His work is mindbending and speaks for the future. What an amazing and gifted writer he is.
Felt like the thriller elements were mostly padding to give the show more traditional entertainment, it didn't really hold significant bearing on the heart of the scifi concept. Arguably all that violence wasn't really necessary for the plot - at all. Felt the same way about Annihalation - there was a lot of military scenes and creature horror that really wasn't central to the core idea.
@@manb4war If that's the case, there is 100% no reason not to mention Westworld. They deal with similar concepts but are EXTREMELY different and simply mentioning Westworld in not way shape or form spoils or ruins DEVS. Just make a video and tell your audience it will contain spoilers. Otherwise it's like 'Yeah, I saw something cool, but I can't tell you what i was or why it was cool, but it's a lot like this other thing I can't mention. And BTW did I say I would recommend it, unless you saw another show I can't mention, but if you did, that show will be spoiled and so basically, just don't watch any of my videos unless you want to learn nothing about the show I just watched". This whole video is "I know something you don't know". Unless you already watched the show.
Yeah I know what you mean. Garland obviously likes Sonoyo Mizuno and sees potential in her, not sure she was ready for this leading part though. Thanks for checking out my vid ✌🏻
ssgbutcher ...Highly agree. The actresses playing Lily and Katie were annoyingly flat and Katie was almost robotic. They often took me out of he show. I will say they did perform well in the last episode.
I am a massive fan of high concept scifi and films and tv asking the big questions. Also as a huge fan of both Alex Garland and Rob Hardy’s work together i was left feeling dissappointed at the execution of what at times in the series had great potential. Was a shame for me. Perhaps the series format was a bit too baggy? Perhaps just didn’t think quite big enough? It was great at times and the production design at times seemed majestic and almost antique but other times felt like a big budget gameshow set.
I quite like Garland's work. However, this felt underwhelming having already watched all of "WW" up to this point. Regarding the finale of this that is.
Great series, I inhaled it in roughly three days. Soooooo many holes in the plot but that's actually a good thing. Since this is the no spoiler channel, I won't mention them here and seek discussion of the series elsewhere.
BBC initially aired the first two episodes and then released the entire series on iPlayer and I had to binge it. Not Garland’s best but defo worth a look if you like his other stuff. Thanks for checking out my vid ✌🏻
I found it insultingly stupid in concept. I couldn't believe it was the director of those movies. I think he phoned it in this time. Watched the first episode and it made me so mad I skipped to the last one, and decided it was not worth my time to watch the rest. Not if that's where it's going.
@@alkeryn1700 good for you. I think the problem is the director doesn't have any premise to hide behind.. like 'the future' or 'aliens' .. so that hand waving could be justified. The dead mouse extrapolation scene was my limit.. I felt like either the director is making a joke at our expense or his entire script is a joke
Lily was such horrendously bad actor that it almost ruined the show. Almost.
Enjoyed the story but the main actor protagonist should've been played by someone better!
Yeah unfortunately I agree ✌🏻
Disagree. Sonoya plays the role perfectly

Same here mate, i watched 15 minutes of the last episode before i twigged.
Cicafé It was. It kinda reminded me of Memento. Or an episode of Black Mirror.
oooph thats a raw deal, bummed that the BBC player shafted you there sheesh

Well I completely disagree here. Only one episode in, I think she’s good
it almost felt like her voice was dubbed. at times her lips didn't match her speaking.
this went completely under my radar! Thanks for pointing it out!
QuiqueNet whole series is available on BBC iPlayer now if you’re in the UK. FX or Hulu in the states I guess?
