Yeah, I'm not sure what level of meta that joke is going for. Pre-roman European tribes were practically hippies compared to what was going on in China at the time. It's the big empires that do most of the damage, and those could be found just about anywhere.

Of course people weren't living in perfect harmony back then, but it wasn't that bad in general as compared to when the "white man" came around and messed a lot if stuff up.

This is based on a notion that Africans were only slaves during the era of the United States, when it is clearly known that slavery was practiced among winning African tribes/empires (such as the Dahomey, for example) and the Arabs long before the slave trade of the new world. It was a lot longer than "400 years", and not just by Western societies in the past. Humor shouldn't get in the way of basic facts.

Slavery for black people lasted way longer, because people forget to add the arab slave trade, that existed long before the transatlantic slave trade. The arab slave trade lasted more than 13 centuries.
Slavery for blacks lasted and lasts just as long as slavery for anybody else. It started when humans were able to capture animals and other humans, so several thousands years ago. And there is slavery today, mainly in Africa and Asia. The last country where it was legally abolished is Mauritania, that happened in 1981.
