Don't worry you did check out correctly there in the end. The reason that the scanner on your left wasn't reading your ticket is because it was just sitting on its home screen or something (the one showing date and for some reason temperature). It seems like that one scanner didn't start up properly.
At least, with a day pass, you can always cross over and get the trolley back to where you started. 😉
