    very elegant and reversible solution!

    This is why I love Nabu - everything is retro but still "new" enough for more discoveries to be made. Great work.

      Hack the IO, replace the video chip with an FPGA, have a Pico take over the RAM, SD for a floppy, when does it stop being a Nabu? 😂

      @@CandyGramForMongo_ Back in the day I had a Z81, a C64, an S100 Bus Computer and several Atari Computers. All pristine fresh from the factory and I did what every hardware enthusiast did back then. I hacked the heck out of them with every tech that was around in the 80s, added full keyboards, composite and s-video, crazy memory banking and even "married the S100s 8 inch drives to the Atari 800. The Retro scene is as much about reliving those hacking days as it is preserving pristine examples of old tech. That is why I bought two Nabu Computers. One to hack and one to preserve.

    I found this very interesting, and I didn't notice when you first posted.

    Very nice implementation! Thanks for sharing

    Thank you for sharing this very cool way to hook up the NABU. Can't wait to see the next episode, where you demonstrate it working. (Fingers crossed!)

      The next video I posted shows this adapter in use. It works fine with DJ Sures software as well as the monitor firmware I tested

    I just built this adapter and can't get it to run with DJSures NABU-Internet-adapter. I'm concerned that in the latest github repo you mentioned that it used to work and now it doesn't? Have you reported this to DJSures? This is the cleanest solution out there to connect the NABU to USB and it's a shame that it stoped working.

    • @MyGeekyHobby
      @MyGeekyHobby  Год назад +2

      hmm unfortunately once DJSures "fixed" the speed issues he was having with the RS422 adapter, this method of connecting stopped working with his software. I haven't had a chance to look into why, hence I never reported it. I haven't used the "NABU-Internet-adapter" a lot recently as I mainly develop "bare-metal". You may want to try the "other" server, that is around for NABU... I'll be trying this next time to see if it's any different: github.com/thorpej/nabud

    What are the advantages and disadvantages of this option compared to the RS422 method?

    • @MyGeekyHobby
      @MyGeekyHobby  Год назад +1

      Most of us have one of those USB-to-serial adapters in our drawers already, plus those are super cheap, so we can wire it up and enjoy nabu network without waiting. If you have to buy one anyway, the external RS422 might be easier to wire up.

      @@MyGeekyHobby But isn't it also a bit faster?

    • @MyGeekyHobby
      @MyGeekyHobby  Год назад +1

      speed wise they will both run at 111kbps ... RS422 is better for long distance, but in this case doesn't matter.

    • @1985AW11
      @1985AW11 Год назад +1

      DJ Sunes posted the challenges he’s encountered using the RS422 adapter: different baud rates (115.2kbs vs 111kbs on the NABU) and the different voltage levels. He thinks the breakout board solution is the better solution.

      @@1985AW11 I designed a PCB to do that, I’ll share the files once I confirm everything is working. I got the ESP8266 attached as well, but that also struggles with the speed difference

    Could you connect a pi 0w directly this way?

    • @MyGeekyHobby
      @MyGeekyHobby  Год назад +2

      PIs in general are not 5V tolerant, so a simple level shifter would be required ... ESP8266 would probably be better here as it could be connected directly the same way (there is a wireless serial port firmware available for those ESP devices and you can purchase them while raspberry pi zero are hard to buy)

      @@andynarain559 yep, the adapter software that DJ Sures published also works over this USBTTL hardware solution.
