That's why the technology I'm going to tell you about today is one of my favorites. This is a legitimate SEO hack that you can use right away. Here's a way to improve your SEO by taking advantage of any less-talked-about natural part of your website. It is not difficult to implement.
It is the robots.txt file (also known as the Robots Exclusion Protocol or Standard). This little text file is part of every website on the internet, but most people don't even know it. It's designed to work with search engines, but surprisingly, it's an SEO wellspring waiting to be unlocked.
I've seen client after client bend over backward to improve their SEO. They hardly believed me when I told them they could edit a small text file. However, there are many ways to improve SEO that are not difficult or time-consuming, and this is one of them. You don't need any technical experience to use the power of robots.txt.
First, let's take a look at why the robots.txt file is so important. A robots.txt file, also known as a robot exclusion protocol or standard, is a text file that tells web robots (usually search engines) which pages on your site to crawl.
It also tells web bots which pages should not be crawled. Suppose a search engine is about to visit a website. Before visiting the landing page, it checks robots.txt for instructions. There are different types of robots.txt files, so let's look at a few different examples to see what they look like.
This is the skeleton of a robots.txt file. An asterisk after "user-agent" indicates that the robots.txt file applies to all web robots that visit the site. The slash after "prohibited" tells the bot not to visit any pages on the site. You might be wondering why someone would want to block web bots from their website.
After all, one of the main goals of SEO is to make it easy for search engines to crawl your site, thereby improving your rankings. That's the secret of this SEO hack.
You probably have a lot of pages on your website, right? Even if you don't think you're doing it, do it. You will be surprised. When a search engine crawls your website, it crawls every page you have. If you have a lot of pages, it will take a while for search engine bots to crawl them, which can negatively impact your rankings. This is because Googlebot (Google's search engine bot) has a "crawl budget".
Basically, the crawl budget is "the number of URLs that Googlebot can and wants to crawl". You want to help Googlebot make the most of its crawl budget for your site. In other words, it should crawl your most valuable pages. According to Google, certain factors "can negatively affect a site's crawling and indexing." So let's go back to robots.txt.
By creating the correct robots.txt page, you can instruct search engine robots (especially Googlebot) to avoid certain pages. Think about the impact. If you tell search engine bots to only crawl your most useful content, the bots will only crawl and index your site based on that content.

What do I do if the File Editor link does not appear for me under Yoast -> Tools? According to Yoast documentation Wordpress has blocked my file editing access, however I'm having trouble finding how to fix that

It must be fixed by your hosting company support, normally it happens on shared hosts but your hosting can solve it for you.

hello, thanks for your comment, no problem, if you have access to your files manager on your host cpanel or plesk, you can simply create a .txt file on your notepad and upload it on the public html. All the best

@@visualmodo yeah, but it would be great to see a guide on how to do it givens is super important and easy to get wrong. Plugin are rubbish for txt files so it would be great if someone showed it without trying to get people to use their plugin
