Thanks, Zee! I think that Citadels is approaching the point of becoming a "modern classic" to me. Such a solid, accessible core design and the added variety of the newest printings just makes it so incredibly replayable. In this age of heavy euros and board game boxes stuffed full of plastic, I think Citadels is easy to overlook but I think doing so is missing out on a fantastic experience.
Gigantic boxes for what should've stayed a small game to be taken on the road. Much prefer the original versions, so it's nice to see that at least they came out with a recent version that preserves the artwork. No idea why in that version they went for cardboard coins though
I have the original with the included expansion. I love the artwork, the box is small and a perfect fit, no air, the coins are great and the crown is wooden, not that gaudy plastic landmine. To date, the best version.
I have the older version but the box looks nothing like these 3 copies. It also had the hard butterscotch coins and I believe a wooden flat crown. The box was a Jaipur or Space Hulk Death Angel shape. Thanks for the comparison Zee!
I have an old spanish edition with the same box as you, cardboard coins and card crown as the classic edition, but with the second set of characters added (to a total of 18). There's been a myriad of editions already.
Wow... That's what is missing out there. There are so many content assuming people is just starting the board game journey :) That kind of comparison makes the decision making process way way easier to me. Thanks a lot!
Played someone else's copy of the original game years and years ago. Decided to get the Classic Edition as I have a personal fondness for that art style, plus I knew it'd get played more than the larger version. Love it, yeah it has less, but it's a lot cheaper and is very portable. I'd say if you're new to the game get the Classic Edition first as there's plenty for it to stand on its own.
I have a (very) old Fantasy Flight Silver Line version I've really been wanting to update. Seeing the newest version here I do think it may finally be time.
I bought the large box citadels a few years ago, but I actually made an entirely new, much more compact, box to store everything in. It's tight, but I managed to make it not much bigger than the classic version's size.
If you like the classic edition, you are better off buying the older FFG version secondhand. It has the roles from the Dark Ages expansion, a wooden crown, and plastic coins, similar to the newest printing. Seems like the newest printing is closer to that edition with the new art and a plastic crown.
I really like the big box version, don’t like the big box though. I wonder if I removed the insert and everything if all the content would fit in the smaller box.
I have the older FFG version with the Dark City expansion but never upgraded due to the unnecessarily large box. I like the changes in wording and art (more diversity) so now that there's a smaller version I might consider upgrading!
I have some other older version that had plastic coins and a wooden crown maker with the DarkCity Expansion inside. Very portable version the box is slightly bigger than a smartphone. And the old artwork is near and dear to my heart. The new one is too similar to everything else out there.
Newer versions look too chintzy to me - a bit too ‘Disney’. Glad I’ve got the older version. (Even if it’s 8 role cards should have been made to look more distinctive from the building cards.)
My gateway game. Idk why z-man is so intent on destroying the uniqueness of every re-release's art style lol. Also downgrading the components and not including the dark city expansion in the classic edition is lame

Be careful, every time you say "modern classic" you infringe on Mike Dilisio's copyright and face legal action.
@@Revariance Dilisio doesn't scare me! I've seen his Top 100. ;-)

Try money:D
This was my gateway game and i still love it. A true classic

I have that one too. And they made the box even smaller

I just hear Eric Summerer going “CITADELS!!!!!!!!!!!”
I clicked on this video only to like this comment.
Thanks! I've seen both of these on the shelf at my FLGS and always wondered what the exact differences were.
They really could have upped the font size on those bigger cards, eh?
Ooooh the new printing looks great. I have Classic atm. Like the smaller boxes for travelling.

If they made an addition to the 2016 version, with extra characters and buildings, I woould pay any money for it
I have an even older copy from Fantasy Flight, copyright 2003. It hasn't hit the table in a while but nothing we have ever thought of retiring it
Thanks for the comparison!
i wish the new one redid the cards with the classic art style
I have a (very) old Fantasy Flight Silver Line version I've really been wanting to update. Seeing the newest version here I do think it may finally be time.
My Citadels is the small blue box from FFG not shown here.
I bought the large box citadels a few years ago, but I actually made an entirely new, much more compact, box to store everything in. It's tight, but I managed to make it not much bigger than the classic version's size.
I have the German Version "Ohne Furcht und Adel", which has the classic artwork AND the nice plastic coins + a completely different "2D" king figure.
Great content! Thanks.

I’m new to the gaming world would this be a good addition for a new gamer ?
I have de Deluxe-version from 2016. I believe in the new version the action cards (circus cards) are no longer present? correct me if I'm wrong.
Somebody turned up the saturation on the cards when making the updated new small box version.
I really like the big box version, don’t like the big box though. I wonder if I removed the insert and everything if all the content would fit in the smaller box.

Dark City you mean?
I have some other older version that had plastic coins and a wooden crown maker with the DarkCity Expansion inside. Very portable version the box is slightly bigger than a smartphone. And the old artwork is near and dear to my heart. The new one is too similar to everything else out there.
I have the one where the box is the same size as Jaipur box. Why are these boxes so big?
It's ridiculous, much prefer the oldest versions
Thanks Zee!
One thing I didn’t know about this game is that Zee doesn’t bite his nails.
It’s a small card game so I’d only ever own the small box. The new one is ridiculously big for what it is.
Yeah, they could have kept the card sizes of the bix box and it would still fit the new small box. With room to spare
Newer versions look too chintzy to me - a bit too ‘Disney’. Glad I’ve got the older version.
(Even if it’s 8 role cards should have been made to look more distinctive from the building cards.)
I could not put my finger on it but you did it for me! Also prefer the black card borders. Overall the design seems more pronounced.
Seems like the new printing just made things smaller as an excuse to cheap out on production...

they could have kept the tiles tbh. Price would warrant them
I just received my copy of the new edition and I want those tiles so bad. I think they're a lot better than the mini cards.
I have the Citadels (Fantasy Flight Edition) , do I need to upgrade?
the biug box version is the real deal. the BEST board game ever made
Gender neutral language does not matter to most people.
I took my citadels and crammed it into the box with Mission Red Planet...because it's basically the same game.
Just like Chess and Checkers are the same, amirite?!
The gender neutral language is very appreciated.
Like the 2016 bigger box, other than the idiocracy of assuming everyone is a male.
The old art is hideous and the newer versions have over twice the content. Seems like a no-brainer for me.
whaaat, the old art is so good lol. I find the new art really generic. Probably still a better buy for the extra roles tho
