This is so cool. I was trying to explain how to fish weird bendy mountain streams. Sometimes I fish the bend and come back because of sun exposure or shadows.
I went fishing with a guide friend and he would lay low and literally crawl to the edge of the river to cast ..he caught the biggest fish on the smallest flies.
Absolutely 💯!!!!!!! As A retired Guide it's the hardest thing to get folks to do. Also looking ahead of the boat to think about your next presentation.
Generally good advice, but it also depends on the fish and the water. If you're fishing smallmouth bass in heavy current, casting too far downstream will cause the current to rip the fly away from the bank too fast. If you're fishing for muskies, you'll find that they have little to no fear of the boat.
I'd like your opinion. I fish alone 99% of the time and use my trolling motor to pull me upstream, then motor down when I'm done or when wanting to go to a new section. Since I haven't been able to figure out how to use the trolling motor moving downstream, how would you fish the future water upstream? Seems like the amount of fishable water is limited in that scenario. Thanks!
The same idea applies. Think about the upstream wading angler and his tactics with relation to the instructions from this video. The angler needs to keep as much as a buffer as possible between himself and the fish. Sometimes, that buffer is distance which is what is most notably described in this video. Sometimes it's a physical obstacle such as a boulder or blowdown. Other things such as current changes/flows/seams can be used to buffer/disguise the angler from the fish. The main takeaway is find some kind of buffer and not only utilize it, but maximize it as well.
Once again I would echo what ben has to say. I have been guiding out of a drift boat for 20 years and not a day goes by that I don't encourage people to "cast to the future", a phrase I have stolen from another guide.
Ben I hate to be the scum tht shit talks I the comments but... I fished a busy river most of my life and caught fish as boats went right overhear heads. I agree it is better if you can fish away from boats ...
I saw the title and thumbnail and I thought this was going to be a lecture on the importance of snowpack.
Snow is future water.
I thought the same thing!

I was kind hoping the closing segment would include Ben looking at his beer and making a comment about that being future water.
It's not future water; it's future pee

One of the most important things I teach clients in Yosemite for spooky wild fish, especially big browns in freestones. Approach is everything
Thanks Ben Loving these Future Facts ...

I thought you were going to call the snow, future water. Guess I overthought that one
Dude I’m just fishing in the moment

Great advice. Fish hear trolling motors 100%
Where we're fishing, there are no roads.... 😎
Future Beer! 🍻

@coreytohme9861 thank you. I appreciate your advice. I'll give that more attention next time I'm out.
the future is HUGE! also, i knew this was not going to be a lecture...LOL cause your huge!
I was expecting a Marty McFly moment; ...so disappointed.
But Ben, what about fishing the swing. Wade fishing take that bobber off and fish a dead drift upstream. That will teach you about mending.
Love this video. Would like to fish with you someday. If your ever in the driftless area contact us we would take you out.

Casting farther than 30 ft. helps too Ben.
Either fish ahead of the boat or move your ass to the back seat and let me up there.
What about trolling?
Yeah! 3rd place! 😂Good tips! Greets from Norway. Skål!🍻
Controversial take. Fly fishing from a boat sucks. Get out and wade!

Come up with another word than “eats”. Please.
