You can totally change airlines and re-check your bags. No problem. But you HAVE to make sure you take off all the tags (and sometimes, I've had airlines place a smaller sticky tag on the side of my suitcase, too; gotta take that off as well). Those tags have barcodes and airport, city, and airline codes. If you left the Seattle/Hawaiian ones on your bags, even if you added your Boston/Delta tags to the mix, someone quickly sorting bags may see and/or scan the Seattle tag and totally miss the Boston tag, which means your bag would stay in Seattle bag purgatory and NOT make the plane to Boston. Fly whoever, whenever. Just always take off your tags LOL

Thats probably what the airport employee was referring to.
You are def allowed to change airlines for connecting flights but you're not allowed have any tags on your bag besides the flight you're about to go on bc they go missing way easier!
