How far will obsession take you? It took Robert Graysmith to places he never thought he would go, and David Fincher was able to capture that perfectly in his 2007 masterpiece Zodiac.

The basement scene is in my opinion the scariest scene in a non horror movie ever. Great video keep it up. One question is it possible to do a explanation type video on movies with hidden meanings and ideas like Prometheus.

I totally agree, the entire movie is full of masterful direction and that scene shows it off perfectly. As for hidden meanings, that really aren't my favorite videos, I kind of did that in Black Swan and will probably continue to do so in the future!

This cemented Fincher as a master. Very few other directors could’ve taken something this slow paced and made it as engaging as it is. I rewatch this all the time and never get bored. It’s so good. He’s never made a bad film. Alien 3 is even decent, but studio interference prevented us from getting the film he wanted to make.

I remember when I saw the movie, in the scene where they are interviewing Leigh, he crosses his leg and his body language in general is something you would call stereotypical mannerisms of a gay person, earlier in the movie Avery calls the zodiac a "raging homlsexual". Never saw anyone comment on that so I just wanted to say it haha.
You can feel Graysmith obsession through the camera, that even yourself start looking for clues in every scene. Great Acting, Great Movie. One of my faves.

Great piece but it would have benefitted to show how the case affects Toschi as well. It's with his inside baseball that Graysmith is able to transform his amateur sleuthing (which at the start, amounts to little more than "fan fiction") into a credible investigation. It's worth examining how Toschi, unable to pursue the case himself, since there are so many others to solve, uses Graysmith as a surrogate, which leads to an ending that is cold comfort for Toschi but at least confirms he was not walking down what he described earlier as a blind alley. It also shows that Toschi, unlike Graysmith, was wise enough not to allow the Zodiac investigation to ruin his life and his marriage, while never retreating into apathy. Same can be said for his partner, Bill Armstrong, who gets out while he can and can hardly be blamed for doing so. Like I said, great piece and I'd like to add that you reminded me that Arthur Leigh Allen was only proven to be an odd man with somewhat circumstancial evidence against him, not a serial killer and for that, his life was ruined. And I hope for the sake of the principle of due process, that this gives Robert Graysmith significant pause at the very least. His hands aren't clean in this regard. It reminds me of the "Paradise Lost" documentaries and how three kids were given life sentences for wearing black and listening to Metallica. They were not even close to being proved murderers. Same with Lindy Chamberlain in New Zealand, an odd and aloof individual who followed a controversial religion and therefore convicted in court and forever in the court of public opinion, despite her eventual and indisputable exoneration. It really shows how we as a society are complacent and point the finger at oddballs and outcasts without looking elsewhere with scrutiny. And also reflects how we all can find ourselves guilty by suspicion.

Awesome analysis as always! Very insightful yet easy to follow. Well I admit I never made it through Zodiac in one go - even though I love the look, feel, story and top notch cast. Will give it a try again soon. Always fascinating how incredibly detailed Fincher's sets are with every piece and prop adding to it - yet they always look uncluttered. Fincher definitely is a master of ultra high precision cinematography and has his signature look, fully embracing the digital workflow with stunning looking results. Nerdy side remark: this was shot (except for slow motion shots on 35mm film) with a Thomson Viper, a relatively early high end digital camera (source: IMDb). Fincher and his highly talented team really knew how to make it look very cinematic, already (over) 10 years ago. Thanks again for sharing your insight with additional, crucial information!

SPOILER ALERT: I don't think Leigh was the killer. Graysmith had gone in TV when he deciphered one of the codes and then the Zodiac started calling his house during the nights. When they finally meet nearly at the end of the movie, Leigh doesn't seem to know Robert's face at all. That and the fact the handwriting never matched.

I think it was both of them and that they were working together somehow.
Maybe Gykowski's need for revenge over Darlene(the girl he admired that never gave him a chance but fooled around constantly) and her fiance-
I believe a murderer's true identity can only be brought by his very first killing.
Gykowski moved there for his obsession with Darlene and everything points to the fact he wanted her and her fiance dead- he even attended the guy's funeral who he had not known.
Arthur however was the one doing the killing and he was very sloppy and not at all a mastermind by look. He was very sloppy and for the brutally of it- killing animals etc... He was probably hired or an accomplice.
I think he might have been a paid killer while Gykowski was the actual legend of the killer - he did all the arrangements the calling and basically WAS the actual Zodiac as he met all the descriptions regarding places, people, motifs, also his voice was identified as the one who spoke on the TV conversation.
Handwriting is like nothing to go by since you could easily ask people to write for you, lick your stamps, that is not like a tell sign at all.
I believe when looking for a killer you are looking for a mind- someone with a motif someone who wants those people killed, who wants the credit of the situation etc. Gykowski's stories in the newspaper and his need for writing and press attention are a huge clue, the "gyke" within the letter as well, but mostly the fact that his voice was recognized and that is the hardest characteristic about a person that can be faked. He couldn't have let someone else talk since it would have been obvious it is staged. I believe he truly was the mind of the situation.
Maybe in creating the story and his name he was inspired by Arthur's watch and ideals.
Arthur doesn't care for the actual press and whatever he was only an executor so he doesn't know Robert's face but perhaps by his final disturbed looked after a long time watching each other - he understands this person might be onto him.

    • @daleviker5884
      @daleviker5884 4 месяца назад

Apparently Toschi WAS found to have written some letters that purported to be from third parties praising his work. He did admit to that at the time. They didn't cover that in the movie but in real life, when he was suspected of forging one of the letters from the Zodiac, it wasn't all that far-fetched given his prior history. It's generally accepted that he did not forge the Zodiac letter, but it wasn't all that outrageous for his superiors to have had their suspicions at the time.

good observations on the use of time and the shift in focus of the film. overall a very good movie, but not great, for me due to the lack of subtext or symbolism or any such art that would elevate it. also the part of the movie that kind of broke the illusion for me is why toschi would write anonymous fan letters about himself, I couldn't quite fanthom that revelation while watching the movie and really doesn't seem to jive with how Ruffalo portrayed him, kind of rubs me the wrong way and doesn't fit with his portrayal in the film.

it always had seemed to me that Fincher kinda ignores the messages that the story themselves give. I mean, the writer wrote it like that because he is trying to convey certain message, but somehow,it seems to me that Fincher just ignores this and focuses a lot more on the effect of the story in the character, and how he can express this effect in a cinematic way.

    • @JacksMovieReviews

Eri Taide Also, Fincher may not have one clear message, but you can always sense that he is a very opinionated director. He famously said that "all people are perverts" and I think that belief can be seen to a certain degree in all of his films. I don't believe that he ignores the messages of the original stories, rather he gives it his own "fincher sauce" and conveys it to varying extents across his filmography.

This was a terrible analysis and you clearly did not understand the film on any level.
Graysmith is the protagonist of a movie that was about the Zodiac Killer. What does that tell you? If the Zodiac had a definite identity, then this would be fine. However, since Graysmith is the only real point of view character, it is quite obvious that he is hinting to the viewer that he himself is in fact the killer. The scenes where he feigns terror at the sight of Allen and the guy in the basement is his way of projecting his own fears about his own inner demons on to these other men, one of whom he is trying to frame for murder.
