Thanks for the great reaction! This was also Polina's first performance on Singer and she took the first place that week. The Chinese audience thought she was almost like a goddess of hope when singing that song. As far as I remember, Singer doesn't have big prize for champion every year, it's just more about a rare opportunity for well-established, talented singers to compete with each other and get breakthrough. I mean champions not necessarily benefit the most from the show. For example the winner of Singer 2017 was the well-respected Sandy Lam, but Dimash absolutely gained the greatest popularity, and Tan Jing, who quit the show in the midway, also broke the stereotype of being a military folk singer and gained huge success.
Thanks to "Singer" I meet: Tan Jing, Terry Lin, Tengri. It was unexpected great pleasure.

You were so on point about the song. Not only is it about war, but about the tragedy of war. It was written and performed by Victor Tsoi with the band Kino. He always has the best anti war songs and songs with a lot of philosophical themes and meaning, yet the lyrics are very simple and elegant. He was a true poet and a one of a kind singer and composer.

Polina sings a song used as the soundtrack for the film “Battle for Sevastopol” about a young sniper girl Lyudmila Pavlyuchenko, who heroically defended Sevastopol during the Second World War. The song was written by Viktor Tsoi, a composer and singer, who was wildly popular in the 80-90s and is still very loved in Russia (he died in 1990 in a car accident).

Polina conveys by her voice the feeling and intent of Lyudmila. I have read her book and seen the film. There were a hundred thousand civilians taken prisoner at the fall of Sevastopol. They could not be evacuated because of the lack of vessels to take them away. The Nazis were attacking every ship. No one knows what happened to them. Many were murdered by the Germans; many were taken away and worked to death in factories. Lyudmila talks of one 12 yr old girl in the Crimea in a rural village. She was raped repeatedly by German soldiers and then mutilated and her body dismembered and smashed against the wall of her home. Her crime ... nothing ... a pure act of terrorism. Stalin should have ordered every German encountered to be killed on sight. The entire country was responsible for starting a war that killed 80M people worldwide. If the Germans had won the war, every Slav and 'undesirable' would have been butchered. This is not just a song. It is more than that, and people should know what Polina is singing about.

There is definitely war imagery in the lyrics, but I think the song is like an introspective, contemplative conversation that a person might have with themselves before making an existential choice or a major life-changing decision.

огромная разница в подаче. в оригинале у Цоя это песня вернувшегося с войны. у Гагариной - идущего на войну. a huge difference in pitch. in the original by Tsoi this is a song of a man who returned from the war. from Gagarina - going to war.
