I'm in Ireland and I remember the ident vividly. It used to appear just before The Muppet Show and Sapphire & Steel came on on RTE. Two shows that I absolutely loved back in the early 80s.
This ident was my childhood. It always looked like a smiling lion’s face to me (yeah, I’m weird, I know) but hey, always gave me a warm fuzzy feeling to see it back in the day. Nice to see it reviewed 😎
I read a piece somewhere (quite a while ago) that the ATV fanfare (which is memorably timed with the colour logo) was composed by Wally Stott - who was responsible for much of the music for BBC Radio classic comedy The Goon Show.
I remember reading this stuff on the old Meldrum site in the 90s. It used to have great info from people who'd actually been involved at the time. I wonder if it's been archived somewhere?

I still to this day do not know why we had to lose the ATV name. The money that had to go into those studios in Nottingham and they didn't last 20 years. And after all this about people in the East Midlands not getting served by ATV, where is the news coming from now, BIRMINGHAM!
@@robertcomer2767 Nor did Granada. I think Granada got away with it because they did have their main studio in Manchester, whereas ATV's was in London, and not Nottingham or Birmingham.
Due to changes in ownership of the parent company, and I presume a stipulation that ITV companies should be British-owned, ATV had to sever all ties with the parent company, including the name they both shared. I do wonder what plans the IBA had for the East Midlands and the "Central South" region had Thatcher not turned the next round of Franchise bids into an auction.
the first time I saw this IRL was on Challenge yes, you read that right, Challenge, before old episodes of Bullseye you can see it (although with a screen bug) (we don't watch Bullseye, I guess the TV randomly switched over as it has a tendency to go to a completely different channel when switching over?)
Nice video ATV was an awesome regional it should of still been ATV in Early 1982 but when it rebranded to Central it was still great when it rebranded to Central but ATV was still great
@@AdamMartyn what about utv? As a person from NI i wonder if you will do it because technically its both an itv thing but also not but also it technically is because nowadays it uses the itv bumbers.
Good! A new Ident Review Extra series, this time on ITV!!!!YES!!!!!!!!!!!! To be fair I would have expected this series to begin with ITV Yorkshire, which is Adam's ITV region
If it's of any significance to you, my region used to be HTV! I am from the beautiful land of Wales! So, I would love to hear you talk about it! If not that, S4C maybe?
A bit before my time but still a classic logo! I often wonder, however if the ATV logo is a rip off of the CBS logo because if you were to take away the bottom eye and remove the ATV letters it would be identical!😃
I don't know about ATV's logo being a rip-off of CBS, as many TV stations adopted variations of an eye theme just as television was beginning to grow. The CBS logo had two weird stick-like appendages at the base of the 'eye'. Turn the CBS logo on its side, squash the eye and you might just see the logo for Border Television.
To my mind the ATV logo was as close to perfect as you get, and the same goes for the audio 'sting' (is that what you call 'em?) I didn't used to live in the Midlands, or even in Britain! Living in the Republic of Ireland I was outside the area that fell within the IBA's official remit, although in practical terms, certainly much of the country (with a well - placed, decent aerial) fell within the signal footprint of ITV and BBC transmissions from Ulster (well, strictly, Northern Ireland) and sites located near the coast of the Irish Sea. My hometown of Cork fell outside this area, but the domestic station broadcast sufficient ATV produced programming for the logo and, in particular, the fanfare to become quite familiar. It always held an air of '70's glamour for me evoking, weirdly I suppose, those stylish turn - of - the - '70's high - rise flats... the _nice_ ones, obviously! all concrete and sleek wood with airport style settees and acres of drapes where cool people danced to Dave Brubeck and Petula Clark. People like that didn't _watch_ a lot of TV, (if anything, they were _on_ TV) but when they watched Sunday Night From the Palladium, it would be on ATV, natch... (You have to remember that when you're 7, you actually believe Sunday Night From the Palladium _is_ as glamourous as they would have you believe!) As to your main point, off the top of my head I'm not able to cite anything specific, but I remember watching a video about ATV's history, their early history in particular, where founding tycoon (Sir Lew Grade??) recounted a story about being in an American hotel on business and being inspired by the CBS 'Eye', and working up the ATV logo based loosely on that while flying back. He made no particular secret of it. (As far as I can see, blatant theft in the world of TV idents is so commonplace anywayas to almost entirely unremarkable!)

Don't worry, Rich. Colour me weird, too LOL! When I was a small kid in Manchester, I saw a smiley face in the old G-arrow logo of Granada Television.

Oh it was definitely a sunny smile to me - and the V was its tongue!!!
The Ident Review is quite possibly my favourite series ever.(And I like its mini cousin too) So thank you, for all the good memories.
My favourite episodes was the E4 ones, more specifically those from 2018-19
Absolutely my favourite and most memorable ident
Yes it is there too.
Looking forward to seeing more of these! I love how creative and iconic some of the ITV idents were!
I expected the "Crossroads" theme to start after the ident tune.
So did I there too?!

Who I believe would later go on to be known as Angela Morley (yep, she transitioned and is or was a transgender woman).
Thank you so much adm, seriously thanks. I loved watching the bbc 2 marathon and then binging it at the end. Great to see this series come back
Thank you pal! Hopefully this marathon will be just as good!

The Associated Television ident is a good ident for the 1960's, to me. The animation is quite nice, despite being simple.

I'm pretty certain it wasn't a coincidence. An early version of the logo actually had the letters ABC in it, just to confuse things even more. ☺️
