  • Pilgrims perform Sa'i, one of the rites of Umrah, between the hillocks of Safa and Marwa.
The rite of Sa'i dates back to the time of Prophet Ibrahim and commemorates the actions of his wife Hajar when she desperately sought water for her son, the Prophet Ismail. She climbed the hillocks of Safa and Marwa and ran between them seven times. After returning to her son, the Angel Jibril appeared. He dug into the earth and a spring emerged. A well was later constructed around this spring, which became known as the Well of Zamzam.
The green fluorescent lights mark the length Hajar ran between Safa and Marwa. Under these lights, it is Sunnah for men to run at a medium pace while women walk at a normal pace.
