Sigma 18-50 f2.8 for Fuji, how is this even possible?

- 3 weeks in Japan, 3 Fuji prime lenses… I thought I was going to be just fine but the truth is that after only a couple of days, I realised I needed a zoom. I went to BIC Camera, tested the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8, paid and left on my Fuji XH2 for almost the rest of the trip.
This a little review of an almost revolutionary f2.8 zoom that goes for around 500$. And we are using Japan as a backdrop.

I don't need the lens, I need your skill! Great photos!
thank you so much :) as someone who is always struggling with the self confidence, I really appreciate your comment
incredible shots, I've been loving my 18-50 and recommending it regularly! Keep up the great work!
How's the focusing in video? Thanks :)
This video made me buy it. Incredible style, you’ve got yourself a new fan!
Hey Albin, thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment! I'm sure you'll love it, best travels/allrounder lens I've used so far
Such a great video mate! Absolutely class 🙌🏻
That intro was on point, every aspect of it ❤
I am a Sony full frame user but have been looking for to build my wife a Fuji system because the compactness is more suited for what she needs. I was looking at this 18-50 and found your review video. I have to say, your shot at 8:11 is absolutely great. I love the layering of foreground to background, both in terms of closeness and in terms of how it's dark and lighter. Awesome video and great review!
Crazy how good that intro was!
I used this lens for 90% of my recent trip to Japan as well (only paired with the Sigma 56mm for some street or night shots). It’s such a workhorse and gave me amazing results. It’s definitely going to live on my APS-C setup for whenever I travel.
Have you use it in a rain? If yes is there any problem with it in the rain?
@@Terrain001 I just came back from Seattle and it rained throughout the trip . No issues for me, still works fine. It does have a rubber gasket to protect from dust and water splashes too.
Such a great video! I couldn’t decide between this or the tamron 17-70, but now I know I’ll get the Sigma - Thanks!
Nice video! I love the style!
This was beautiful moviemaking - thank you for your inspiring video - I went and purchased an XH2S and a SIGMA 18-50mm lens - I will be using it in part to film some action scenes in my movies.
Not only did you go to the same places that I did in Japan, you bought the same necklace. Nice. Great shots too :)
Nice! I’m actually curious also which locations you visited in Japan, some of them doesn’t look like the usual tourist places
I have the XH2 as well and plan on pairing this up with my Fuji 70-300mm for my trip to Aisa in the next few months. I want to travel as light as possible but not lose out on lowlight situations.
Excellent video 😊!!!
Que buen video Carlos! A mí me llega la semana que viene y tengo mazo ganas de probarlo para grabar con mi xt5 :)
Brilliant video and photos
Saludos Carlos. Estoy pensando comprar la Fuji xs20 o la Canon R7 cual me recomendarias. Gracias 👍🏾
the intro 🤯 amazing👏
Thank you Ben :)
Your colors look stunning! I noticed that you bought the VND 1-5 stops, was i enough for flog2? Or do you shoot in another picture profil maybe?
Thank you! as a matter of fact, I rarely use flog2. This entire video for example was filmed in standard flog, gives me everything I need without the extra noise of ISO 1250.
Wow, that lens can sure handle 40 MP XH2. The pictures are sharp and full of details. The lens might have more character than modern Fuji lenses.
Fantastic video and footage :) But oooh no, I was about to click on "buy" for this lens until I saw the focusing issues at the end. I have seen this with the Fufifilm 16-80 as well as the 70-300. (I think the 16-55 might be similar). I replaced my combination with the 18-55 and 55-200 which are not technically parfocal, but they focus fast enough to give you that illusion. Then I just have the 23mm F2. That seems all I need.
Hi Carlos, nice review and good shots! It seems the lens is perfect for traveling. Congrats for this buy.
By the way, next time Zonko asks if you know me, I hope you do. 😂 (He ask you at the live stream from Rabenbräu)
I remember! perfectly!! Because right when he came back I told him I thought I knew your profile picture hahaha but I wasn't sure anymore if it was because of this channel or the 1000PS :P and thank you! Next time I'll stay a little longer live with Zonko
Beautiful, very cinematic.
Your video footage is unreal. I'm actually astonished. Did you shoot f-log?
Also great review, the lens is indeed very impressive for the price and size.
Hey Mike, thank you so much for your words. This was indeed mostly shot in flog, then graded to taste.
Im getting a lot of noises on xh2 video mode. what is your settings on low lights
Made me want to invest in the lens and also go out there and take more pictures, thanks a lot
Amazing job ! any time when you felt that 2.8 wasn't enough ? or that 18 or 50 weren'nt enough ? What made you choose the Nisi vnd ? ( I hesitate between the Nisi Vnd, the new Polarpro helix maglock, the freewell K2 and the Kase Wolverine Magnetic) DId you use any gimbal ? About Wr, I shot this week with the sigma 16 1.4 under a mid rain and next day I had electronical problems with the camera due to the connectics between the lense and the camera. This scares me a bit
Hey Tom! Thank you :) A year ago, I'd have still avoided 2.8 to shoot at night or interiors, but since Lightroom introduced their denoise AI tool, I feel pretty comfortable shooting at high ISO. As for the focal lengths, I really didn't miss more reach and at the wide end, usually 18 mm is enough for my taste, but it's true that 16 mm gets you a more dramatic look. I went with the Nisi ND filter because it felt very well built and was available at the same shop in Tokyo for a good price. And when it comes to the weather sealing, I used it in reasonably heavy rain sometimes (the summer like pour in Japan), but I did try to cover the lens as much as I could. I haven't used the Sigma, but I read it has a similar structure for dust/splash resistance :/
I keep debating between this lens and the Fuji 18-55m F/2.8-4. The F2.8 of the Sigma all the way through would be amazing but I think that focus hunting of the lens would drive me crazy during filming videos. I grabbed the Fuji 18-55mm for now with my new X-s20, I hope it does the trick, but nice to have this as a light alternative.
Great pictures and description of the lens, Carlos. That minimum focusing distance and F2.8 all the way though might convince me to give it a try.
How have you been liking the 18-55? I’m in the same dilemma you were in!
@@bryantnguyen625 I bought the XS-20 with the Fuji 18-55mm and a month or so after picked up the Sigma 18-50mm. Overall both are great. The Fuji lens has a feel to it that I love (plus the image stabilization, I think, is important if your camera doesn't have IBIS) but the Sigma being F/2.8 the whole way through and a tad bit sharper plus weather sealing on the lens ultimately persuaded me. Also worth mentioning - if you like to add grain in your film recipes, then you won't notice the extra sharpness in the Sigma 18-50 as much. The 2.8 aperture all the way through on the Sigma is the biggest selling feature for me to reduce my ISO and have images with less noise, less motion blur with moving subjects, and more Bokeh. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the info. So hard to decide on the kit lens and this when buying new as the kit lens has such good deals on it. Very hard decision but both seem great with a new xs20 😀
@@wesleychapman9001What about the autofocus? Did you notice a big difference compared to the Fuji?
@@felixisme interestingly the sigma was regularly missing focus by a tiny bit, but after i did a firmware update for both the xs-20 and the sigma it was much better more often. now i'd say it's pretty good and rarely an issue.
Fuji is getting some amazing lens options, the 11-20mm F2.8 from Tamron, this tiny little gem, the Viltrox 13mm F1.4. Some of the lenses surpassed Fuji's offerings in many ways. I have the 18-55 F2-4 from Fuji which I do love, but I agree with you, how is this F2.8 and even smaller??
The viltrox 13 is actually insane. Astonishing how good that cheap lens is
@@mikeenslin3009 I'm on full frame now (Sony ZV-E1) and bought a Viltrox 16mm F/1.8 (that's 11mm F/1.2 equiv on APS-C!!). That lens is also incredibly good like the 13mm. Viltrox is really hitting it out of the park lately!
Do you also have the 56mm f1.4? If so, how do you feel it compares to the 18-50mm using it @50mm f2.8? Would you miss the background separation?
Uhm I’ve got the 56 1.2 WR, and had the older version. The difference in background separation is considerable, yes, but to be honest, the last Lightroom update brings the ability to add bokeh to your photos and in my first tests, it did a very good job. In any case, those are very very different lenses for different tasks.
Hi, first of all: great video! One question: is this lens noisy while it's trying to focus? Like, is this lens good for video recording of people talking? Thanks!
I haven't really heard the lens autofocus engine, shouldn't be a problem! it's certainly not louder than the others
great video! I’m tempted to buy this lens for my x t30 II. I have only one doubt: how I change the F in camera? Is it so uncomfortable not to have a diaphragm ring for street? Thank you again!
Thank you! You can set one of your wheels, front or rear, to change the F number :)
Atfirst I was thinking of Tamron 17-70 mm f/2.8 lens because it has OIS but if we are using sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 on a camera body which has IBIS like XT-4/5 for video purposes would it really matter that much(compared to OIS+IBIS in tamron 17-70mm) ? tamron seems good but sigma is smaller and cheaper than it so I was more confused what do you think about it ?
Also interested how you stabilized your footage? All done in post? Filmed with my xh2s & sigma 18-50 a week ago and in my opinion the result was a little bit "shaky", although i turned DIS on. Don't know if it is the sigma but with the xf16-55 i had better results although it has no OIS.
It all depends on the performance of that IBIS. For example, filming with a non-stabilized lens on a Panasonic GH5 or similar was never an issue, it was smooth like butter. But in bigger sensors, like the one in the XH2 or the Canon R5, you can’t get away with too much movement. Used the R5 with and old 70-200 the other day, and I was very, very shaky. That being said, unless you are using the tele end of the lens, the Signa works just fine with XH2’s, XT4/5 etc… you just to be a bit careful when you are at 50mm since it might look stable, but there can be terrible micro jittering
What do you think about Fujifilm X-T20 with fujinon 18-55mm lens? How much is good max price for used body (only)?
Here in Austria you should be able to find an XT20 for 350-400 euros, maybe even with some lens :) it’s a decent camera, not the one you would bring to a professional shoot, but a lovely little piece to enjoy photography with
Had this on my Sony for a while ma dude, I switched to fuji and traded the sony mount for this one. I just can't let this sigma go even with the amazing fuji prime lenses I have
Paired with the new 10-18mm f2.8 contemporary you would have a super travel kit, very light with very good image quality. I went with Tamron 11-20… very happy with it… but somehow I’m left wondering…
They say the Tamron is a bit sharper. Been looking at these 2 also.
What's the background music at the start?
does it has not lens correction in the xh2 menu? it must use lightroom to do this?
By default, the camera applies a predefined correction profile (unless you are using a lens with no electrical connection with the camera), but you can go further with Lightroom. That’s what you saw here, even with in-camera correction, it still shows some distortion…that can very easily be fixed in post.
Thank you
Qué gran video. Mola mucho la música. Me recuerda... No sé si decirlo... ¿A Amélie/Yann Tiersen?
Awesome video! Just curious if there was significant price difference between the Japanese price vs the Amazon price?
The yen was a bit weak then, that and the fact that you can pay tax free made it significantly cheaper than in Amazon. Oh, and thank you!
@@carlosdomi thanks for the response! I'll be going to Tokyo and Nagoya next month so I'll wait for that trip and hopefully get the lens there.
what gear are you using in filming in the b-roll
Fuji XH2 🤝🏻
I always liked Sigma 17-50 on Nikon, but then changed to Fuji and since the first day I hated this, for unknown reasons to me, religiously adored XF 18-55.
This one is nice, but still a lot of distortion corrected digitally, vignette is cool, also no stabilization which is a problem with my X-T3. Also being snob and wanting the aperture ring while knowing that it would be perfectly fine without it.
is it f2.8 for the entire zoom? like f2.8 can be set for the maximum zoom of 50mm?
That’s correct, 2.8 for the entire zoom :)
Nice shots. Handheld or gimbal?
Hey there, thank you! It’s all handheld
If you have a fixed aperture of f2.8, and you film slog3 so you're stuck on your native ISO, then you have a fixed shutter speed, how in the world do you control the amount of light hitting the lens? Does the job end up falling on a variable ND Filter?
Yeah. My ND filter is usually the only thing I’m adjusting on the fly as a run&gun video shooter, everything else remains as is
Magic.
Jawohl, big in Japan! 🎌🍱
The leaf detail is missing 0:35, is that because of RUclips compression? Low data rate or the lens?
that was shot at 2.8 with the focus on the taxi driver, so the leads should be slightly out of focus. But generally yes, what I see cutting the video and what we eventually see in RUclips after exporting and being compressed is unfortunately very different.
Bro on an unrelated note, you remind me of Ryan Gosling in Drive lol (In a good way).
hahaha cheers man, thank you - best compliment ever
2:36 “I levitate towards prime lenses” I think the word you are looking for is gravitate. But if you are truly able to levitate that is impressive! I might buy a light zoom one day. I recently tried the 16-55 for a month but it’s way too heavy - in my backpack and on the camera.
it was, indeed, gravitate what I meant :D no levitating powers yet!
Buen vídeo.. mmmmmmmmeesusscribo!
Muchísimas gracias, Ramón!
I don’t get why the 16-55 did not work for you?
too big he says
Hi Pierre! as Wesley pointed out, it's too big and heavy to carry around for trips - it doesn't feel any lighter than the Canon R5 + 24-70mm 2.8 I use at work.
You’re losing 3% on the wide end and 7 1/2% on the long end. I’m not willing to compromise.
Better than loosing weight in my wallet
A very annoying review. Don't hold it against the lens.
Some of you are seriously hilarious 😆 have a lovely day!
