How to Animate 'Ennard Wires' using Bezier Curves (Five Nights at Freddy's)

  • This is the technique I've been using for any of my Five Nights animations that feature that shower-hose looking tubing that crops up a lot, starting with Ennard in Sister Location, which was then retrofitted onto earlier designs (For example on the classic animatronics' skeletons in Help Wanted).
The software I use is Blender, but the same tips should be applicable to other programs more or less- I tried not to get too specific, the basic concept is what matters here. Even though I'm hardly the person you'd want to go to for advice on character rigging (I'm really quite bad at it), this little system has served me well, and I have gotten a couple questions about it in the comments, so I might as well show how it works.
Viewers who have seen the other videos on my channel might be confused about where some of the footage in this video comes from: The very opening shot is from an unused attempt to recreate the salvage scene from FNaF6 which I've never published, and the redesigned Baby model with the fancy endoskeleton is from a video that I intend to put out soon, but haven't finished yet.

I usually think of them as 'Funtime cables' since they seem more like cables than wires to me, but that's interchangeable. 'Funtime' predictably refers to the animatronic line that uses them, though it's notable that most of the official endoskeleton designs use several sizes of them, wrapped around a very simplistic frame structure (in the canon models there are actual frames under all that, though it's nigh impossible to see any detail on them), and the more complex or unique components are attached to that structure. I like the look of that Circus Baby model, as well - it seems more in line with what Scrap Baby eventually is, and the opening movements and mechanics of the claw and arm are very well done!

The simplistic endoskeletons underneath the cables can be mainy seen in the making animtroinic slides hows in SL meuns, most notable how you see basic joints on some slides with Baby before the cables cover that area. Pretty sure Freddy and Foxy have something similer in their sideshows. Something unrelated I notice with the funtimes endos is that outside of animations like Ballora's or Yenndo's jumpscares you never actually see the cable endoskeleton insides move like muscle, and even then with the two animtroinics I mentioned only have basic mouth movments. It feels odd how despite the fact that the Funtimes have cable that presumably move like muscles, we don't see the cables move like hows muscle would or at least something close to it. It could image it being difficult to animation due to the amount of cables and makeing them maintain structural stability expressly in parts where the cables overlap like the cables on Baby's shoulders can chest on her endoskeleton. I personally think that giving the cables animations would make the endoskeletion more unsettling with all the movment that the cables produce. It would also give the endoskletions more lifelike and to further give off the futuristic tone of SL.

You could NEVER imagine to have something like that in places like SFM or C4D. Blender may look complex, but once you get the ropes, it's a walk in the park

Scrap Baby is on the to-do list, but as for Scraptrap, not likely. If I ever make a Springtrap model, it'll be closer to the original design, because I prefer it by a wide margin.
