When I was 5 years old I first met my oldest brother who is nearly 20 years older than me. Here was this big rough looking man and all I knew about him was that he'd been in the Army in some place called VietNam and then afterwards on an island called Guam , which for some reason in my 5 yr old mind I imagined was something like the island where King Kong lived . It was years before I really got to know my brother and came to understand what he'd been doing in the years before I met him . Now were good friends and he often will hear or see something that reminds him of his experience in the jungle , and he will tell me a story that always has my total attention. I have so much respect for my brother and all the people who fought there , whether they chose to or not.

I was in Nam in 1970. I was on the USS America (CVA-66) so I never experienced any of combat and danger that Mr. Downs did. I did go into Da Nang on a mission for 3 days. We had a communications problem with the Marines. No one tried to kill me, as far as I know. I feel guilty because folks like Mr. Downs made great sacrifices and I didn’t. You folks are heroes. The boots on the ground were Army and Marine units, and that was their job. It (for my mind ) was your fate and you served with honor. My 4 uncles over there would love to have the time reversed because 2 of the 4 saw heavy combat. Danny, was Air Force and one would think he was pretty safge. Wrong. He fought sappers nightly hand to hand at his air base. He committed suicide in 1992. All 4 voluntyeered and all came home pretty angry about the complete bullshit and terrible R.O.E.`s and utter ass backwards way that war was fought. My heart tells me you were meant/fated to be there as you were. I thank you. Sorry for the ridiculous typo`s!!

Its.probanly safe to say the vast majority of combatant soldiers do not aim to kill babies or children. There are sick individuals out there for sure and definitely some in us military but most soldiers don't fall in that category.
Again, in war collateral damage is impossible to avoid. Don't demonize the us military...

Yes; it was, in my mind, the very first Vietnam war memoir that wasn't filled with the stoner/war crime cliches. It was the first book that compared with Bernard Fall's French/Indochina War writings. Sure Rumor of War came first, but because those Marines were still 'unseasoned', it always seemed to go poorly for them. On the other hand, Downs' unit had already spent enough time in the field to have developed a certain 'bush sense'.

Don’t feel guilty. Consider yourself lucky. Less than 10% of all personnel in all military branches combined actually see combat. I’m thankful I was in the 90% group. I’ve late relatives that weren’t so lucky. One paid the ultimate price commanding a tank August 3rd, 1944 in France. Another was a 4 year POW survivor in Japan, and another was at the battle of the Chosin reservoir in North Korea. Memories that haunted them all their lives.

I have two late grandfathers who both served in the Pacific theater. My paternal grandfather was a 20 millimeter (pea shooter) gunner on the USS Idaho (Big Spud). He told me that he never forgot the smells. My maternal grandfather volunteered in the Utah Army Guard when he was 16. His mother had passed away when he was 10 and his dad just shook his head. He had graduated high school and was a Sargent when he was called up for 1 year of active duty in 1940. The Army was reorganizing from a 4 square division to a triangle. Anyway he took part in guarding the west coast and after Pearl Harbor ended up at Schofield Barracks as part of the 25th Infantry Division. He was an aid man (aka medic). He was able to go home after Luzon, and aside from a written history didn’t talk about the war. The part of the war he wrote about the most was his time spent in New Zealand after Guadalcanal and New Georgia. The division was on R&R and him and a buddy spent time with a farmer and his family working on the farm. But then it was back to training. I respect those who have served.

Great and sad, indeed. War is just that! I think Robert E. Lee said something like " It is good that war is so very horrible or we might come to love it" Something very close to that. I know he is a hero and legend to millions of people, but I am not one of them. He was a great General , tactically, but not much logistically or strategically. Those two honors belong to U.S. Grant and W. T. Sherman.

This was decent, but no where close to some other Vietnam books written by Vietnam Vet`s. I have not seen any of them in audiobook form though. So "Fields of Fire" by Sen. James Webb is great! He`s a highly decorated combat Marine and a great author. "Charlie Mike" and "The Last Run" by Leonard B. Scott, are great works too. He is a Vietnam vet., Army Airborne Ranger 173rd Div. Such a shame that people were forced to do this to each other in the name of ‘fighting communism’ on one side, and fighting for your country’s independence on the other. Fighting for your own country’s independence and freedom can never be wrong. The Vietnamese were never truly communist, it’s just that they were the only political party that promised the people the freedom they so clearly deserved. Quite frankly I’m glad the Vietnamese won, they deserve all the freedoms that Americans so proudly claim as their own.

Look at Vietnam now, they are against Chinese expansion in the South China Sea which coincidentally ties in with US policy. That makes your comment about Chinese influence look pretty stupid. You clearly know nothing about the whole situation. I’m guessing you’re American and cant take criticism which makes complete sense.
