    The SparkFun Audio Codec Breakout - WM8960 is a low power, high quality stereo codec with 1W Stereo Class D speaker drivers and headphone drivers. The WM8960 acts as a stereo audio ADC and DAC, and communicates using I2S, a standard audio data protocol (not to be confused with I2C). This audio codec is chock full of features some of which includes advanced on-chip digital signal processing for automatic level control (ALC) for the line or microphone input, programmable gain amplifier (PGA), pop and click suppression, and its ability to configure I2S settings and analog audio path through software via I2C.

    So... a GENUINELY entertaining video!!! Super enjoyed the nostalgic intro with the musical accompaniment. The technical explanation with whiteboard was clear and concise. The incidental break dancing was an unexpected hoot!!! The real demo and the end, well, as this entire video, brilliant!
    To make a video this seamlessly informative and entertaining must take great efforts by all involved!! Kudos to you all at SparkFun!!
    Now, I'm heading over to your website, gonna find this product and download the mentioned spec sheets.
    SparkFun, you are missing one IMPORTANT thing: a WILL-CALL pickup at your location!!

    This is great! I didn’t know the ESP32 could play sound from the onboard Bluetooth. This may be the solution I’ve been searching for for a few years now.

    I was going to mention 8-track was missing as well as Reel-to-reel but if you can't find examples, I can see skipping them, especially 8-track. What a bad format. It was great to see the Squirrel Nut Zippers CD - what a great CD that is!

    "Line level straight to speakers"? Maybe you mis-spoke, perhaps you were suggesting headphone out to another external Amp?

    • @PeteLewis
      @PeteLewis Год назад +3

      Yeah, sorry, I was looking at the "computer desktop speakers" Rob had setup while I was saying that, and incorrectly said just "speakers". Most desktop speakers I'm thinking of (with the 3.5mm TRS jack/plug) include the amp and speakers. So yes, headphone output plugged into "desktop powered speakers" is okay, but not "straight up" speakers. Also, you could certainly plug into any other external amp as you suggest (like the Qwiic Speaker Amp we released a few weeks ago). Another thing to note about this hardware. It is setup for "cap-less headphone wiring", to get the best possible frequency response and save space. If you want to setup with in-series output caps, then you'll have to size accordingly.

    Could this Audio Code Breakout be used for mixing a 40 khz square wave with audio input to make two channels of differential ultrasonic output for long distance sound transmission that would heterodyne back to audible?

    Is there anything like this available commercially? They sound perfect for concerts, but the DIY seems too ambitious for me.

    When might you have examples for Raspberry Pi 4 / Pico ???

    • @bobbychan5486
      @bobbychan5486 Год назад

      There isn't a SparkFun Python Package currently written for the Raspberry Pi or Pico. However, this was used in the SparkFun Top pHAT. If you check the associated hookup guide you maybe able to wire it to the GPIO from the Eagle design files. IF you also look in the tutorial, there was another driver written by someone else that was used with the Top pHAT for a Raspberry Pi. I just have not tested it with the breakout board.
