I think you’re right in that the classic Mercs are so much cooler than the new ones.
best episode ever shame no w204 c63 6.2v8
Great video Damian! I own a 1970 W114 250CE and it is a very elegant drive every time I take it out the garage. People just love them to see old mercs glide through town. Best regards from Vienna, Austria
Thanks for sharing!
The 280 SE at 5:42 and 7:08 to me is one oft he most beautiful Mercedes ever made. It was designed by Paul Bracq, who also designed the SL Pagode.
The bright green colour on the 450 SEL 6.9 at 13:10 is called „silver thistle“
The 600 was never called „Großer“ (which means big boy) by Mercedes itself or here in Germany.
My silver R129 SL500 is right at the end, which I've owned for 12 years, stays outside on the road in all weathers and doesn't miss a beat. It's the one next to my friends pink CLK in the video. The pink car certainly causes a stir, but a lot of people in the local Mercedes Benz club like it. It's all about enjoying cars at the end of the day. Each to their own
Couldn’t agree more
Like you Damian, not too interested in the modern Mercedes stuff, one of the main reasons being that with the old ones it feels just right describing the boot capacity in terms of the number of bodies it can swallow! I was waiting for that particular line, and you delivered, thank you😂😂😂😂 Did you see the Late Brake Show with the Hammer in it? Awesome.
“ Modern Mercedes don’t do it for me either! Bring on a 280SE 3.5 pillarless coupe any day! 🙏🏽🌹
thanks for featuring my black 230E
👍🏻👍🏻 You’re most welcome
Great video. What a great variety of beautiful cars.
Glad you enjoyed it
A damn fine film.
Never been a huge Mercedes fan (especially after driving a basic 190 a while ago). However they have always had my respect and some models are wonderful. Always lusted after the estates like yourself and your Maybach just looks wonderful (think it’s the colour and wheels combo). Love going around a show from my armchair too, thanks Damian. 👍
Cheers, Mark
To this day my favourite was a 1972 280CE pillarless coupe with stacker headlights owned by someone i knew in the 90s.
Really enjoyed that, Damian. You seemed to have your eye caught by everything I would, too!
Mercedes R129 SL 500!? Pure Art!
Lovely! I once had a w116 450SEL in milan brown metallic with caramel interior… has a automatic gearbox with only 3 gears. Was so cool to cruise! Sold it unfortunately but it was too expensive for me as a student back in the days. Just get a supersalloon! Fits perfectly in your Garage! Best regards! 😊
with you on the Wagons becoming very sort after and uber cool
Absolutely
I love the R129 500SL! It was produced during the real Mercedes era with classic Mercedes quality and reliability.
❤❤❤
Some of the ones with the bad mechanical histories are the ones that I like. The early 2000s to 2010 cars I liked, but they put so many innovative things in them. 🤷🏽♂️ I do like the AMG GTRs. Seen them on the road and they have a presence. Maybe you can pick up Shmee 150s AMG GTR roadster. I think he still has that car. I think you'd like it. And the old kid in me would love a 190E Evo..
Hey Damian,
Love this deep dive into Mercedes old and more recent.
As a child of the early 70’s I share some of your likes in old Mercs.
I have fond memories of being driven around in a friends Dads 450 SEL 6.9 in the 80’s.
Only one slight disappointment, you missed out the model of old (ish) AMG that I proudly own, the small but mighty SLK55 AMG parked next to the green AMG GTS.
Surely an MX5 sized car with a 5.4 Ltr V8 is worthy of a Car Guys like.
It should, but the looks have never grabbed me - not of any SLK
@@TheCarGuysTV
Hey Damian, respect your candour as always. The faux F1 looks at the front won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. I just love the madness of the big n/a V8 in such a small package.
for you Damian is the E 60 the reight choise, I belive. Mooe rare and powerful as the E500 !
Dearest Damian 😊 I am also a 1972:er and my favorite vintage Mercs are 500 SEL, 500 SEC, 450 SL (Dallas) ❤ the 300E! My favorite new Mers are The sort of plain/modest 2017 AMG GT (no wing) and a c63 amg wagon 😍❤️❣️
7:34 "I've got me ice cream. Gonna sit back and look at this car for a FULL TEN MINUTES!"
I love it!
9:00 Jeremy! Hehehe.
Wonderful Damien. The only thing it was missing being a Mercedes video was Lewis crying on the radio about his tires or team mate !
😂😂
I’ll raise you a 280 SEB cabriolet 3.5 in the dark blue you saw the pagoda. That and an early TE is all you really ever would need.
had a cple of r107's preferred driving them to my 84 911.......on the hunt for a nice r129 at the mo,an old Merc has so much class about it
Beautiful automobiles...The pale blue metallic 280CE was my auto soulmate. Would love to have seen you go all wobbly if they'd had a 6.3. Thanks for this awesome blog style Mercedes fix.✌️
👍🏻👍🏻
👍🏻👍🏻
Lucky ME - I just recently acquired one of my DREAM cars..... a 2009 [pre-facelift - YAY!!] AMG C63 wagon/estate in AMG Silver which is SUCH a fabulous colour!! This C63 has had a stage IV tune, giving it a WHOPPING 510 BHP [at the crank] and a gob-smacking 700NM of torque!! WOWSERS!! It can sprint to 62mph [100kmh] in 3.6 secs!!!
Woopsie....dare I say it....I think my license is in jeopardy!!
Boom!
Loved this episode. I was afraid you'd do a section on new Mercs haha, I've no interest in them either. But those old classics are just beautiful. I'd happily daily one of them.
Glad you enjoyed!
You need to give a heads up about car events like this as I would have definitely gone….
Check out the Beaulieu website
I like the older Mercs. They maintained quality through the 1970's unlike most, then lost the plot in the late 90s. A Pagoda, wagon, or late 70's SLC for me
I used to live near MB’s US HQs and requested sales brochures for their cars and just absorbed myself in the details of the cars.
The R129 SL is the Benz that makes my knees weak.
Recommend getting your knees checked
The 500 E is a W124, the 190E is different car altogether, the W201.
10:30 Hart to Hart vibes 😉
Exactly, as I love the "Pre 🐭 Mickey Mouse Model Years," as well, from the 1950 thru the early 1980s!!🙂👍🌅🌄🏞🌟🌠
Great vid, just finished, cheers, The GTR is a great car, especially in the Green, a close friend of mine has a stunner in Green, recently went to Goodwood in it, great all rounder……it also has the perfect number plate to suit!
👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for the video! I never knew that British people love Mercedes-Benz cars ;-)
Love the AMG GTS the best.
90's mercs are good too. It's the modern ones that all went a bit meh, although there is a couple of gems here and there. I quite like the modern iteration of the SL, but not the 4 cyl.
The last comment was the best in my opinion not a fan of the modern Mercedes…..but they 50s to 90s are the ones to go for.
My uncle had the 280te, I used to berate him about not washing it, “it’s a bloody workhorse not a garage queen “ he’d say 😂
👏🏻👏🏻
What I learned as a young person in the 70s (born in 1965), was that Mercedes was Finns' status car number 1. I live in northern Sweden in a city called Kiruna and here is the iron ore mine LKAB. I remember when the Finns came to Kiruna to work in the mine and to save money, 4 Finns crammed into each housing barrack of about 25 square meters. After a while, there were new Mercedes cars lined up in the parking lot and the car company in Kiruna that sold Mercedes was named the best Mercedes seller in Sweden for several years. Then I can mention that my boss who I had in 1989 when I was working as a baker, offered to help me buy a Mercedes 280 SE in mint condition for just under £5000. It was also gold metallic. But because I was going to be a father, I never bought the car. It should be pointed out that in 1989 the Mercedes 280 series were not worth a lot of money even though they were well maintained. Cars in Kiruna don't have rust, because here they don't use road salt in the winter, but use small gravel. I remember a man who ran a profitable business in Kiruna, he had a garage full of original and rare Mercders, sometimes an original gullwing merceders. A Mercedes that was from Kitler's time.
When Medeces was up in Kiruna in the winters for test driving, the test cars were left in this man's garage. So we in Kiruna got to see all the new Mercedes models before others got to see them. There were no car spies with cameras up here. Today, that man is no longer alive and Merceders has moved its testing operations to Arvidsjaur together with most of the car testers. Except for Reanult, they still have their test facility in Kiruna. Bentley and Rolls Royce usually visit kIruna when they test their new models.
I've owned a 1974 450SL and a 1993 320SL. Additionally, I've owned a '99 E55 AMG and currently own a '08 S550. So, I've had my share of Mercedes. You asked us to comment on our favorite at this car show? My personal favorite would be YOUR S600 Maybach. I've wanted one forever, just can't afford it. After that, I think those older SL models are very lovely, but I can't fit behind the steering wheel of the pagoda models and they are also too expensive for me.
In 1975 a sheep dealer used to give me a lift from Northampton to Melton Mowbray in a 450 se. I absolutely loved that car
Mercedes were simply the best 40 years ago. Now is a premium wide range brand, with no soul.
Hard not to agree
It’s like you read my mind, there are some absolute steal 80’s and 90’s Merc’s on Autotrader giving me an itchy wallet, love the Channel, keep up the good work Damian
I bloody love my Mercedes 128 420 SE in black slightly lowered split rim graphite wheel and straight pipes beautiful leather interior 108000 miles bought for £1000 they are quite simply bargains, and look so cool!! 👍👍
126 *
I love Merc too; this is indeed my special kind of vodka; I have the 8th one I’ve owned for 22 years- and I’m considering therapy before parting with her..; it’s all in what you value, I suppose…
Certain Mercedes do indeed become as family as old homesteads or favorite pets- it becomes very hard to let them go…
No; my favorite Merc is actually a W111 Fintail…a 220SEb specifically…but a Petrol Green 123 Estate is easily in my Top 5
Brilliant episode!! I too would love a 500E.. Good ones are just silly money though, even with high mileage.. I'm a few years younger than you, but have a similar taste in MB.. I bought my dad's then 7 year old black, manual, black cloth interior de-badged W124 300E back in '97.. complete with Duchatelet wooden steering wheel..... absolutely loved it.. before writing it off on Friday 13th March 1998... a date etched in my memory... However, a few decades on, a clean W126 S class 300SE or 420SE is on the list for a usable daily.. 70's / 80's simply the best MB era IMO
8.40 Hart to Hart, surely:)
Great video with some lovely cars - 280SL is the most beautiful and oozes class.
Couldn't agree more!
Thanks that was cool
Great episode, Damian.. any of those SL500’s for me.. proper, proper motor.
👍🏻👍🏻
The Hammer in picture is a CE
Instead of the green AMG Gt have a look at the newly released AMG coupe....... no electrification and it’s a beauty. For classics I would pick the blue on cream cab as my favourite.. good enough for the Ewing’s ..good enough for me!
I think a GTR should be in your future. it would really compliment your collection
OMG I want all of them .
AMG GTR definitely deserves a place in the garage, but too loud? Isn’t that the point? Not a car for a shrinking violet 😉
Petrol Blue.. that's the teal coloured car. My first MB was a W126 280SEL in that colour. It's a great colour. I then had a nautical blue 300SE which I traded on a 560SEC. Signal red over cream. Should never have sold it. An AMG 55CL took its place. Great car with a stonking engine but when the suspension started to play up time to trade out. My wife still has her original 25 year old 230SLK. Only 47k kms on the clock, a specially factory painted Signal Red over the red and black Interior. White dials with red pointers. A lovely little car. Is it a future classic? What you need in the garage Damien is a CL65. The unicorn V12.
I have a fascination for people with a fascination for Mercedes (oh, and Porsche 911s) because I really do not see it...! Must be from growing up in an area where the roads were swarmed with these things 😂🤷♂️
how many ice creams did you have? 😢
😂
Check out the DW episode on Benz...'95-up, even in restorer's & engineers eyes they "Got chintzy" and low quality. Pretty damning show
The Blue 280 SL is sweet, most to me look more like something you see for £5k on Autotrader and briskly skip over. Spotlights screwed on to the front bumper is okay or even cool for a rally car but very uncool on an old gold Merc. I think Old money, old person when I see these cars, which is nice but I'm not quite old enough yet
Oh am I'm 6 years older !!
That's a lot of off duty taxi drivers 😂
The only Mercedes I want is a CW311…..
Would love a Bobby Ewing Sl in grey.
Something I love about your presentation Damian, I never know if you are serious. Green leather? really? oh well, no accounting for taste. I have a W123 230e in the garage....if it is the coolest thing then I might have to get it going again. Last seen in the sunlight about 15 yrs ago when I was polishing it.
How much was the 500e. C&C thanks
"Don't point"!
For me, it has to be the 300 SEL 6.3 No other Mercedes comes closer.
And for this clip, Damian earns the honory swabian batch.
Explain?
@@TheCarGuysTV Many from the land of the Mercedes star share your views and sentiments - you hit the nail on the head! The cars on show at Beaulieu are fabulous, the yellow 280SE with the green interior a show stopper. Based on the video, my personal favorite is the silver 280SL. Over the blue one, which is sparkling to the point where I'd feel it'd blemish from looking at it alone. Not to dismiss the effort it takes to give it this level of appearance!
@@TheCarGuysTV One more thing - if you take the 600 home one day, you'd soon realize it is so uber you'd have to build it its own garage
@@JoachimPfeiffer 👍🏻👍🏻
R129 sl60 will do you well - rare and powerful and pre amg merger .
Technically the SL60 was a post merger car. The pre Merger was the 500 SL 6.0 AMG.
👍
Im sorry but a w124 500e bears no relation to a 190e @14:00 - but a very enjoyable watch none the less :)
Where has it all gone wrong?
That drug dealer spec E class is abit of me😂
Were any of the 450 SEL's made in right hand drive with the even larger 7.2 litre engine ? I think the late James Hunt owned one like the one shown here, with only ! a 6.8.
There was no 7.2 450 SEL. The largest engine was the 6.8 ( badged as a 6.9) M100. The AMG version of the W108 300 SEL 6.3 , had a 6.8 , aka the Rot Sau.
I do like a few the older ones, but the current demographic of Merc owners now makes them untouchable in my eyes
Whats got my Street Cred at the Dogging Spot: a Classic Merc? or a Brand New Benz?
Grosser and the 124 E500e. Any Black's there Damien?
Surprisingly not
Love a bull dog smelling Merc
Mercedes E500 W124 weissach
classic mercs are too expensive now
The E500 looks like a 190? Really?
For younger viewers, these cars were made when Mercedes Benz built cars properly and drug dealers had taste. The Silver Pagoda for me, or a nice 107.
Dare we congratulate you on a certain blueberry watch??
Sadly not - not even I am that crazy 😀
16k wow. I have a water melon and a mint choc chip arriving soon.
@@TheCarGuysTV that’s a shame, I was looking forward to that particular episode of The Watch Guys.
@@tonysheabo It would’ve been good, but I suspect it was bought by an investor or a company.
Why do you call the 600 "grosser"? that sounds so awkward
That’s what it’s known as
@@TheCarGuysTV here in Germany it is just the 600. Nobody calls the car like this. Grosser is a german adjective but it makes no sense to use it in that way.
That's why I stopped following you. Got rid of your 488 GTB but excited over old mercs. Had an old sl. A rust bucket. Hydraulic suspension went wrong. I thought you were clued up. But you sadly are not
Glad you stopped following. Please don’t ever come back.
I like your channel. However, when you spell Beaulieu it rolls my toenails back... But maybe you really spell it that way in the UK.
As opposed to?
@@TheCarGuysTV I assume he refers to its French origins and would like to have it pronounced in French...even though it s actually in Hampshire, England. If you didn t know, beau lieu actually means nice/ beautiful place literally translated. Kinda bet he thought it was a place in France...
Some rear on that red one ;)
Yes, that was the daughter of legendary cricketer Hugh Jarse, Surrey and England.
@@michaelarchangel1163 It would stretch the full length of Surrey for sure.
Yes, we definitely need another video, not enough shown there. I do love a Classic Mercedes ❤
Perhaps, although I doubt it, there wasn’t one there, but not to show a Fintail is extremely disappointing.😭
Your enthusiasm shone through and I think after that video you really need to go and scratch that itch.
The right time to buy is when you see it!
The three-pointed star has always been at the top! I own a w123 coupe' (230ce) and it's fantastic, top quality stuff! Great video!
owned a W124 220ce Mercedes a few year's ago, wonderful car, really spoilt me for the subsequent car's i've owned.
I have had modern E class coupe, cls shooting break and c class. Comfortable, even beautiful, very well poised on the road, but lack of character and punch.
Nice video as always, I say nice this time as the cars just don't hit the spot for me, we are all different aren't we and Mercs, mmmmmm.
With all the respect for modern days Mercedes..... but...... the elderly ones are by far the nicest...
Yea love an old Merc just bought a 1993 w124 coupe
