- Everyone knows Wave Race 64. Despite the Nintendo franchise not seeing a new installment in many years, that remains an iconic title. But did you know that, before this jetski game hit the Nintendo 64, it hit the Game Boy? Join me, Jonii, as I take a look at the oft-forgotten Game Boy title, Wave Race!

I won a copy of GB Wave Race from a Smash tournament and this game cemented my love of top-down racers. Really nice to see this obscure game shown some love, interesting to learn it's history (I thought all the Wave Race games were made by NST) and cool seeing the colour palette of the GB Player version.
Had this title in the 90s, and frequently competed against my father via link cable. Disappointed that the franchise didn't continue, we would have likely continued to play newer versions over the Internet on newer handhelds (DS, Switch) if the game (and online play) had been available.

The graphic you keep calling the link cable is actually the 4 player adapter. I can only thibk of this and some F1 racing game that ever used it.

I remember buying this game along with Yoshi’s Cookie from FAO for $40. Never once regretted it, even though this one was HARD. Never beat the 800cc on either format 😢

As always, great video dude! Game looks pretty similiar to Eliminator Boat Duel from NES, one of my favourite childhood games. That one didn't have Slick Wilson in it though so Wave Race's superiority is unqestioned.

This game is far too adorable to have such brutal loss-screens. Just utterly stomp on my nuts and drag my name through the mud. Insult me right in front of my parents-type of loss-screens. I am shocked and AGOG I say.
Also, really hope this makes it to NSO now that we have a Game Boy emulator.
Hopefully we get reviews of 64 and Blue Storm as well.
EDIT: I doubt this was made for the Four player adapter, as that existed at least two years before Wave Race was released, so it's more likely that F-1 Race was made for that purpose.
Counter argument: half the game is racing. Half the title, by letter count, is Race. Therefore it is a completely balanced name that accurately represents the proportions of Racing to just enjoying the Waves.
I came for the waves, stayed for the race.

Wave Race should be rereleased on Nintendo Switch Online if Game Boy or Game Boy Color games get brought over in the NSO Expansion Pack.

Hey, thanks for the comment! To be honest, it sort of depends on the video. I keep a pretty big list of potential video topics. In the case of things like Super Monkey Ball and PokeShipping, they're things I was passionate about as a kid. For stuff like this and Ms. Pac-Man, those were cases where I'd been interested in the franchise and spotted something really obscure and intriguing that I felt like going down a rabbit hole on. I find myself doing that a lot more lately because I love a good internet rabbit hole. I tend to stumble across good video topics much more often than I do racking my brain trying to think of them. Sometimes I'll just learn about a game that looks interesting and making a video happens to be a good excuse to play it.
The common thread, though, tends to be that topic either hasn't been extensively or I feel like I have something to add to it. Something else I've found myself doing lately is trying to find videos on certain topics I'm interested in and then, upon being disappointed that there's nothing, add them to the video ideas doc. That's kind of my way of making the content I want to see I suppose.
