- Krista Tippett, host of award-winning NPR program “On Being“, and poet David Whyte discusses several of the life-sized concepts addressed in Tippet's book, Becoming Wise: an inquiry into the mystery and art of living.
In 2014, Tippett received the National Humanities Medal at the White House for ‘thoughtfully delving into the mysteries of human existence.’ Her radio program, On Being, “shines a light on the most extraordinary voices on the great questions of meaning for our time. Scientists in a variety of fields; theologians from an array of faiths; poets, activists, and many others have all opened themselves up to Tippett’s compassionate but searching conversation." Whyte has been a guest on her show.
In _Becoming Wise_, Tippett distils the insights she has gleaned from years of luminous conversation into a coherent narrative journey, over time and from mind to mind, into what it means to be human. Critics say the book is “a master class in living, individually and collectively. Wisdom emerges through the raw materials of the every day.”

I love this quote: We have not answered all of our questions, nor have we solved all of our problems, but we are confident that we are confused on a higher level and about more important things.
Life’s procedures seen with wit
my favorite part of Krista's podcast is when she asks her guests to describe the spiritual background of their childhood. I always have a profound admiration for her eloquence, incisiveness, and hospitable presence.
David Whyte AND Krista Tippett together ... it doesn't get much better for all of us looking for soul nourishment and general humanness with a lightness that brings space to our words and our minds. Thank you for sharing, Marina de Boer

Expanding Circles just beautiful
Yes, but they still wouldn't talk about sex.
@@TheDionysianFields Funny you. What's the import?
@@meghan42 Sex is an epicenter. It needs open discussion.
Remarkebly... How he holds his hands into a heartshape , as soon as she mentions john o'donohue... How he seems to become all silent...
One of the most gifted people; now two of these most wise and empathic couple share here in conversation together. Thank you Krista. I will begin to focus on beautiful questions. Donahue, my other favorite guest of Krista’s. Mahalo.
A perfect pairing. How stimulating and reassuring to hear two intelligent and thoughtful people speak openly from a place of integrity and a lifetime of inquiring.
But do we have this too? Sure hope so. Our lives are a poem.
This is the first time I see a video of Kristta speaking after months of listening her podcasts. I find myself trying to listen to her voice than watch the video.
I agree with that... for years of hearing her soothing and balanced cadence...
As relevant to day as when this was first aired. Thank you for this, for the quiet. For understanding deeper things.
Krista Tippett has a body, a face and hair. Who knew?! I've loved listening to her years. Her interviews are so intimate, thoughtful and beautiful. I knew abstractly that she was a physical person, but actually seeing her speak is surreal. It's so weird.
So easy to fall in love with these two people talking here.
Love the positive energy and intellect. Humour from all I viewed Rosanne Cash it's amazing how I could tell just from listening to her music then she was Catholic and I knew her dad was not because I'm her age and saw her dad in concert in the early early 70s late 60s with my 84 year old now Mom
Excellent watching and joyfully listening from Peru thank you
Love u, Ms. Tippett...
This is the only video that I can't get enough of; both of my fav people; humble and down to earth conversation.
He speaks about heartbreak as he knows of what he speaks as well as many other important things. My first interdiction to her.
By being human we are vulnerable. A beautiful and vulnerable question💯‼️♥️no vulnerability, no conversation in a marriage….❤😢😊
❤❤❤Being! Becoming, Becoming wise, not an ending/destination💯‼️♥️
Despair?? Walking through it and the. Assisted by aging….
EXACTLY! 1:00:46 - 1:00:56 ✨👌🏽✨❣️
...BOTH people must allow themselves to be vulnerable AND have peace be their ONLY goal, not to change the other.
Wisdom cannot be obtained. We can hone it more as we age and be come wiser, but we can't obtain complete wisdom.
Its not something that can be bought, we learn as we go
"On becoming wise"? My sister loves Krista Tippett and invited me to watch this video. I'm halfway through, and what I've decided is that I'd prefer to be a dunce. I love my life as it is. I love solving puzzles, both logic and jigsaw. I love making people smile, and I love when I smile. I love reading books, all kinds of books. I love looking at snowscapes and thunderstorms. I love being with my children, and I love being alone. I have no complaints. I don't want to dissect what makes life good for me. I'd rather live it.

Unfortunately, we're entering a reality where if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. I believe that. The stakes have risen and simply living one's life implies a complacency that the world cannot afford. The challenge is in how to not get too weighed down by it all. People like Whyte and Tippett (while maybe not ideal) can help here.
@@TheDionysianFields you're expecting too much.
." I don't want to dissect what makes life good for me. I'd rather live it." Yes.
Sexuality is the core of incarnate life. There would be not emotions, language4, no reflections, without this most potent and primal act, it is the core act of every creation.
Beautiful conversation. Funnily ,Krista is still the questioner here, silent and a witness!! Bringing out the best in the other, though in this case she is supposed to be the interview ed, I thought!
She does ask beautiful question ..
Love David Whyte, he has a magical way of putting things simply and beautifully without the need to overcomplicate thought by using too many words. The opposite is true about Krista (for me).
This is really very good👍 education I have done in Mumbai 1996 with Ferdi Disoza and Advance course also
Somehow, through the marvel that is the RUclips algorithm, I can safely say, without hesitation. I've now seen the whitest piece of footage of all time 👏👏👏
you have to be high to get that calm
" The most objective is the most subjective."
These two definitely balked at the sexuality topic, which was a little disappointing. Also, I don't think Whyte's blending of being and becoming was adequate to address the question posed. Maybe he believes they are synonymous, but for most of us being and becoming express the battle between self-acceptance and self-improvement. That's no small issue.
Finally, I don't think Whyte entertained the idea of boredom as a catalyst. This really speaks to one of the larger issues of our day...getting people to disengage from sensory input. The questioner feels that this is where real progress begins and so do I. Yuval Harari also talks about the possibilities that arise from embracing boredom.
Other than these three things, great talk.
...for you.

Who else is here because of the Sam Harris podcast?
A Thomas Merton quote “love the question”.
Where are the leaders of the world, today?
That was wonderful
Thanks for your comment, Ashley. We're glad you enjoyed it.
Wow. When Tippett implies that part of the communication problem is that "we're trained to be advocates", I could feel every leftist on the planet cringe.
39:20 poem: the face in the stone :D
There's some real ethos and metaphysics to Whyte's poetry. Something about Irish poets man. Yeats had the same power.
What is the name of the pub?

when you think you have the answer....you are wrong. Always more questions...
Krista does not answer questions put to her. I find she dances around with other words not giving a direct answer. Difficult to follow.
Quería comerciar con Crypto pero me confundieron las fluctuaciones en el precio
Why are we here? As children, we were always asking why. Lincoln said the very same thing, that he was amazed at how many people stop asking questions way too soon in their lives. Profound questions that can be answered.
If one is looking for spiritual enlightenment, the practice of Falun Dafa Falun Gong is a heart and mind cultivation practice, totally free, with approx. one hundred million practitioners worldwide. It consists basically of two books and five gentle exercises.
Ah, but would'ya look now..two Irish talkin' about it all...

Such a beautifully naive vision of the world.
Which part was best?
You can have 3 months on that question.
She looks mean 😂😂
I've always admired Krista Tippett enormously...until I viewed this interview. What I see here is someone rather too self-possessed and rather arrogant and perhaps a tad too proud of herself. Lacks real humility. Needs to do some further serious work on herself in my view. Get right down in the soup. She seems to think she's rather "all that." And for me, she's not quite there yet.
I think she is not afraid, as so many of us are, to be herself. Others of us that aren't afraid, are that way out of superiority, but the sense I get from her is that she would want and work for everyone to be able to do the same, to be themselves without fear. But that is my interpretation, I'm sure I have much to learn from your perspective.
For me, it seemed she was sure enough of herself to take enough time to answer. I think she's travelled far in her inner world and she seems to be speaking from that country which might feel unfamiliar.
She have a leadership charecter
This is too hippy and liberal for me...skip
If this tippett person could be completely cut out of the video it would actually be worth watching. The smugness she exudes while talking without saying anything is disgusting. Never trust anyone that can't stop smiling at themselves.
Agree on everything!
What is astonishing is the number of people who seem to admire her empty words and incoherent sentences.
Absolutely..her words are so empty. I just don’t get a good vibe from her and I have tried
The queen of new age mumbo jumbo. Don't waste your time, go to Robert Barron or Rabbi David Wolper if you want real inquiry into mystery.
Well surely you enjoyed David Whyte's poetry? It was a very interesting pairing!
An exchange of words can make or break a day. Is “Mmhmm” a word? Because this guy says that non-stop as she’s talking. It’s so annoying that I’m not 10min in and I’m already about to stop the video.
Mmhm. Yeah. Yes. Mmhmm. Mmhm. Yeah. Mmhmm. Yes. Mmhm. Mmhm. Mmhm.
