That's the thing I think is so impressive. Both of these movies juggle a lot of main characters, arcs, locations, major and minor villains. It already feels like we've spent about as much time with Miles and Gwen as any of the live action Spider-Men.

The 'what's up danger' scene is unique because it was conceived by the Spanish artist Alberto Mielgo as a proof of concept for Sony. This movie made me realize that Spider-Man has become a Shakespearian-type character. He’s so well known that new authors can use references from his previous stories to add depth to characters, and even change those tropes to tell new stories with new meaning and commentary. It happens all the time with Shakespeare’s characters, it’s metatextuality-really amazing to see that in a Spider-Man movie.

Disagree. The climax was the giant chase scene which was epic. You don’t need to punch people for there to be a “battle.” It’s like complaining that Se7en ended without a climax when the emotional reveal/twist was the climax, just as the twist in this movie was the final pump of adrenaline for the climax.
So imagine Se7en but instead of them having the killer in custody, it ends with the box and the promise of “we’re going to get him” which is a new story to continue on the tapestry of that epic.

I personally really liked the slow pace of the first act. Because the moments were great for me. It made me love Gwen. And it delves more into Miles’ relationship with his parents. Particularly his mom, and that was particularly therapeutic for me. It also gives Miles the motivation to go against Miguel (amongst others). When his mom tells him to never let anyone else tell him he doesn’t belong. It sets up Miles vehemently going against Miguel telling him he’s a mistake, and standing against the Spider Society.
It made me really ship Miles and Gwen, as friends and as future romantic partners. The scene with them hanging upside down together was beautiful. The scene where Gwen is investigating the Spot’s earlier crime scene and she’s reporting to Jessica. Meanwhile Miles snuck up on her and is invisible while looking her in the eyes as she’s explaining her lies out loud, was brilliant and emotional.

There is no conclusion to this film. You could technically say that Gwen gets an ending in a way, but our main character does not.
A lot of people compare this to empire, but I don't think that works bc in empire we get the whole "Luke I am your father" reveal and confrontation before the ending of the film. We don't get anything similar here, essentially it's the equivalent of Darth Vader and Luke walking up to the room they're about to meet in at the end and the screen just cuts to black as a tbc message pops up. Kind of annoying. Everything else is perfect about this film though I'm gonna be honest.

Are these bots comments? This sequel is absolutely not close to the original. This is frozen2 to frozen, kungfu panda2 to the original, and so many others. I am glad its sucessful cuz the original deserved more... but I will not support this delusion that it is a better movie.
The soul of the first one was miles and peter parker dynamic of grumpy teacher and a student. Gwen too was more fun when her and miles were just getting to know each other. Added to those fun parts, is the relationship and death of the uncle.. it all was done and fit so well and knew how to both fun and heavy moments.
What do we get at that level in this one? Gwens backstory that we seen few times before, miles getting like 3 long scenes to confirm what we already knew, he is a teenager and has loving parents. And then its convoluted plot that gets explained in the last 30 min of the movie.
No, the indian, pregnant, punk, vampire spiderpeople... none of them had dynamics and fun of the original core characters in the first one...
I think the sequel will do better because dynamics between prowler and spiderman and the uncle has really great potential.
But this movie is at best 7/10.. except animation, that is truly 11/10, but unfortunately that was counted to the main score.

This movie just doesn't end. Doesn't tie anything up. It just opens packages of plots and leaves it's sequel to close them.

Thank you. I just wrote a fucking thesis a minute ago in the comments about this exact thing. Isolating the reasoning. No climax or a cliffhanger ending = minus points. That's what everyone says. but Infinity War ends on a cliffhanger and everyone says that ones better than endgame. But cliffhanger. we end the movie without an ending to the story. So shouldn't we minus points on it? Or are we just gonna ignore the thought of it NEEDING to be a linear vanilla progression of story telling, and instead ju dging the movie on all of it's feats like we should? Because me for one I love the first one, I was afraid this one wouldnt be as good because sequels rarely are. But I think personally this one was better, but at the very very least, this one holds up perfectly with the 1st movie and both should be heralded as Champions of Animation, and Super hero diamond standard of story telling. Not 1 below the other, both equal sitting at the top. and if the 3rd one holds up, then I want the 3 of them up on that pedestal because they deserve it.

Second. I haven't seen anyone mention Gwyn's theme has an adapted motif from the "Spider Man" theme song. The guitar plays the same first 6 notes, but with different pacing over the etherial synths at 1:17. For some reason, to me, that was my favorite music moment of the entire score.

I love the way they use the analysis of the Spider-Man narrative within the movie and ties it to what people expect from minority group stories by using that scene with the guidance counselor and the college essay. It sheds so much light on how people think that the stories of marginalized people always have to revolve around trauma to be interesting or to be valid. Miles not only makes the choice to reject that in the movie by rejecting the Spider-Man canon, but the filmmakers reject that THROUGH the movie by not making his story about fitting in as an Afrolatino kid and not centering race trauma in the story. While that is the story of many, it isn’t the story of Miles, and that’s okay. He doesn’t have to justify his right to exist by going through trauma. He is already proud of his culture, and he is no less a spider person if he doesn’t adhere to the “canon.”

My favorite part of this movie had to be Miles and Gwen's relationship, it just feels so fleshed out and deep. Both miss each other deeply and their eventual reunion just feels so earned and scenes like the upside-down clocktower scene or when they're just chilling eating the food at the party. Platonic or romantic, their interactions were just perfect to me and the complications with Miguel and keeping Miles in the dark was so hard to watch but so well done. I hope they end up together but either way I'm confident the team will give them both good endings.

They really go deep into not only how the mantle screws the life of a high schooler but how is pretty much impossible to the parents be chill with their kid suddenly showing up buff, having time windows where he’s totally unaccounted for and clearly hiding something big and I appreciate how they kept their reaction realistic without turning them into a hindrance in the way of Miles saving the day.

Here's what I said to my friends about this film:
8/10 imo, it's half of a movie innit
Everything about it is class though, my goodness this film has STYLE. Love how they leaned into the style even more than before and made it absolutely amazing. The colour palettes for each universe and character are unbelievably creative. Some of the emotional scenes especially between Gwen and her dad, the way the backgrounds look and change and the way tu ey portray lighting on their faces... The entire runtime, every action sequence, every movement, every bit of dialogue, just... Its all dripping with swagger. The animators were flexing through the whole film. All the voice acting? The story beats? The OST? The characters portrayed? Small interactions that contributed to the future? If it wasn't half a movie and didn't feel so rushed at times, this would be perfection. I know I clown on the MCU for their constant jokes, but here, it fits. The film takes itself seriously when it needs to and doesn't when its not necessary. The shift from comedic tone to serious is never so jarring as it is in most MCU films. And of course, it helps that theyre not trying to make the animation look realistic in the slightest.
8/10, bit rushed and it's only half a film, but fuck is everything else about this perfect.

I would disagree that the movie feels incomplete. Both Miles and Gwen have reached a satisfying point in their character arcs in this movie. Gwen reconciling with her father and finally learning to accept the help of others by literally bringing the band back together. Miles realizing that he does not need to be defined by others and choosing to go his own way, pretending to act weak and desperate while preparing a venom strike. It leaves on a cliffhanger yes, but it doesn't feel like one that left the characters still entirely up in the air. I'd say it's a lot like LotR in that regard

Finally got to watch this film today, and just finished listening to Penguin0z's review of it too. Judging by his reaction, yours, my friend who I saw it with, as well as my own; I think it's safe to say this movie's biggest weakness is just the fact that it ends on a cliff hanger. Because it's the only thing that left me wanting more. And I get it, they obviously wrote a story that was going to need more screen time than 1 film to pull off. Which I can totally appreciate, and I have no doubt that the next part will be a completely satisfying conclusion. Honestly this movie blew the first one out of the water in ever single way except for the cliff hanger ending. Best movie of the year for me, so far anyways, hands down. The fact that is manages to juggle so many ideas and art styles flawlessly - not dropping a single ball once - is absolutely amazing.

      @chrisgregg2092 Год назад +1

@thehumanity0 Outwitting Miguel, Gwen reconciling with her father, Miles coming out to his mom, Spot breaching Miles' universe were all payoffs. Minus definitively defeating an antagonist, they're pretty much going to have to start new arcs for the main characters if the next movie is going to be any good. I'm not denying there's still unfinished business, but I think as a middle chapter of a trilogy, this is as complete as it gets. The only other middle chapter movie that does it better, IMO, is maybe the Two Towers.
Think about the first Tobey McGuire Spidey. He kills Goblin takes on the mantle of Spider-Man, but we don't get any resolution to what this means for his relationship with Harry or MJ. And that's the first movie. He just gets to murder the baddie.
