A diesel will surge and speed up when there's air in the lines. It was explained to me that the fuel is injected at a specific time and because the air can compress it changes the timing. As soon as I heard it surge I said to myself there was air in the lines...

I really enjoy your videos, I truly admire your courage, this project is huge for a first boat! Twenty five years ago I owned an 11 meter steel Dutch Merwede cruiser, worked more than a year on it, never ever never again I will buy an older steel boat, every part I started to work on, was much more work than I presumed. Older steel boats need never ending maintenance, the problem like you stated in your video, the corrosion always starts on locations which are not visible. The most problematic areas were always around the hatches and windows! Keep the videos coming, good luck👍🙏

More great work as usual, with an emphasis on proper preparation. It's too easy to get impatient to see the finished product, and so, cut corners in the preparation. Then end result is often something that's not half as good as it could have been, that you have to live with for the rest of your life /ownership.

Congrats on the running engine! However, the engine is cooled by the seawater the boat sits in. And yes, if the boat is out of the water the engine isn’t being cooled! Short tests aren’t a problem. But keeping the engine running for long is NOT a smart idea! Cheers!

Hi, you are doing what I plan to do in 2 years time so I am really enjoying you work things out. I have sailed on many boats and always found an issue with the shower and toilet in the same wet room. Every time the shower runs everything inside of course gets soaked including the toilet. It is a great space saving idea for a small boat but you have a large boat with plenty of room. I would therefore strongly recommend that you build a seperate shower room from the toilet. The room can be as big as the shower base (about 600mm by 400mm) and so does not take up much space. The walls are built around the shower base and lined with perspex that drains into the shower base. A louvre in the bottom of the door and a small hatch in the roof allow the steam to escape and keep things from going mouldy. This is what we plan to do to a 34 foot dutch built cruiser (where they usually only have a toilet and no shower). We also plan to make a bimni (sun shade) above the outside steering position and make it out of solar panels. These panels will be mounted onto telescopic poles with ball joints at each of the four corners of the panel assembly. This will allow the panel bimni to be dropped down when navigating a low bridge. Also the panels can be tilted toward the sun when the boat is stationary. The third major modification is to have a water filtration set for the shower water. Showers consume most of the water and so to be able to use canal water to shower in saves a huge amount of water required to be kept on board. My understanding is that sailing canals in summer the biggest delays are waiting to fill the water tanks. Cheers Steve Thompson, Melbourne, Australia

How are you cooling the engine? If you rely on raw water cooling, you may have damaged your impeller system when you ran the engine.

Strip caulking could have been used around the deck window avoiding future moisture collection points under the metal strips welded to the deck. The caulking is approx 3/16 in depth. Also automotive gasket maker would work over freshly painted steel of course. Let the maker set before installing window that way you don't squeeze out all the product.

when you put insulation back in you will need to keep in mind can warm air touch the steel. If it can , it WILL condense and give you moisture rust problems again.
Perhaps a closed cell spray foam insulation. Or put enough layers of rust inhibitor/primer/ oxide paint that it will take a long time for moisture to work its way through to the steel.
Looks like that drain pipe got a build up of dirt in the corner which then stayed wet and accelerated the rusting. Can you just eliminate that drain and have the water roll off the roof and down the sides?

Have a professional run the overhead on your engine. (adjust the valves and fuel injectors/nozzles to specs.) and check the cylinder compression. Then on your next oil change send the used old oil filter in for analyst. This will inform you of any metal trapped in the filter and it's origin . Giving you a idea of the condition of the bearings and other internal moving parts. This may save you grief in the future. If it does not already have a magnetic oil plug I would suggest one for obvious reasons.

You refer to Bruynzeel as a kitchencompany. Bruynzeel started as a
carpentry factory and they are famous for kitchens and pencils(!). They supply also plywood and especially for shipbuilders, marine plywood sold as "hechthout". Not cheap but really high quality and still used a lot in ships. NB To demonstrate the quality of their newly invented wood panels, Bruynzeel asked in 1939 the famous ship designer Van Der Stadt to design a sailing boat. They designed "de Valk" which has become a standard class. Nowadays "de Valk" is a Polyvalk, made out of polyester.

But my thoughts on the front windows.
Would it be just as easy to cut out the front frame work windows and all then just replace the whole area with new window frame cut outs?
Just seems like a lot of time cutting and fitting little pieces in all the rusted areas....
    Just my thoughts. Looking good!!!

I was just thinking the same. The boat looks pretty great from the outside, but water, moisture and condensation started to make a terrible job under the inside wooden panels. To some extent, I think it was close to reach the point of no return. Luckily, you decided to achieve an in-depth restoration that pointed out all these issues in time to be fixed.
Congratulations for the great work. I can't wait to see how you will put everything back in order and how it will look like, eventually.
