- Hey guys!
So in todays video I wanted to sit down with my big and EXPENSIVE makeup brush collection AND a much much smaller and reasonably priced collection and see if I could create the same makeup look on both sides of my face.
SPOILER ALERT: I already know I can because there is a funny story that inspired all of this. I was forced to use only what I could pick up at Ulta about a month ago because I was traveling and left ALLLLL of my brushes back at home sweet home. As a result, I learned that as much as I LOVE makeup brushes and am always looking to collect some more, that maybe there is something to be said for getting your hands on what you can and MAKING IT WORK.
Which is a lot easier than you think if you are willing to improve your skills instead of buying more stuff which as well know by now is kinda my shtick around here.
So whether you have a massive makeup brush collection already and just want to try something new or if you are ballin on a budget and want to learn about some great affordable makeup brush options; THIS VIDEO IS FOR YOU.

Alexandra Anele shes seriously good.
Whitney: you do NOT need to go out and buy these brushes
Me: puts all of them in my cart 🛒
😂😂😂
SAME 🤣😂
I think Julia Adams has a style of makeup you’d really enjoy.
I cannot do winged liner. I have watched every video I can find, but still can't get the hang of it. I would love some tricks that I might be missing. Love your videos. Your realness and down to earth is a game changer for me. Please keep them coming. 💋👍🥀
Would love to see winged eyeliner tutorial. Would love to know which real techniques brush sets you got.
They are all linked in the description box 😘
@@whitneyhedrick hey girl! Actually, they aren't :(
I really like Lauren Mae beauty, and I think her style is different enough from you to be good inspiration but not so different it’s like.... jarring. If you DO want to go for jarring, would love to see a series of you transforming to different new aesthetics (goth, e-girl, drag style, etc.) and you discussing techniques you learned through it that could be Incorporated into your daily routine. Just thoughts though!
That is the best idea I have ever heard in my damn life!
That's a really great idea!
I was going to suggest Lauren Mae, too. For creators who aren't pro MUAs, I would suggest Emily Hanhan, Audra at Home, and Kinkysweat. I'm not sure if Beautbean and Snitchery are pro-MUAs, but they would be great for different techniques too. All of these folks are entertaining and super smart.
I love this idea!! Please do this series!!
Amazing idea @lydia weinberger. @allThehappysquirrels I love Audra at home❤️. She’s hilarious and down to earth.
@@Kayla-lo8wn She's definitely one of my favorites, and I've found some great content creators through her channel.
If you love Real Techniques brushes def try Eco Tools & NYX brushes! As an MUA I have a ton from all 3 brands and I prefer the less expensive options over a lot of my Nars/MUFE/ect brushes. I recommend the 3 flat top brush set from Eco Tools. Not only are they pink and cute but incredibly soft & great for buffing in foundation/concealer.
I bought the rare beauty concealer brush and it's alright but then I found eco tools crystal round top set on sale for like 6 and the smallest one does concealer so well. I love it.
Raw beauty Kristy loves those 3 flat top kabuki brushes as well. She was trying to remember which set they came in and I’ve been searching ever since for these brushes. Thank you soo much now I know exactly what to search for lol I kept looking for pink flat top kabuki eco tools brush and could never find it. Thanks again @Shekeita M
I have a boatload of brushes. I keep pulling out my Sonia Kashuk ones (Target) and Real Techniques ones to use. I also have a few really small eye brushes I got from BH Cosmetics in a set that I love for hooded eyes.
As some one who has bought a sh!t ton of brushes, I definitely back up real technique brushes. I love how soft and user friendly they are. They work great with cream, liquid, and loose mineral makeup. I do see some spot lacking for smaller detailed brushes though (I have very hooded eyes and about half of their eye brushes are too big for what I prefer). But over all these are some of the best. Another great line of brushes are the profusion brushes. Especially their eye brushes as those are much smaller than the real technique brushes.
I recently fell in love with BKBeauty Brushes but I still love Real Techniques! the Deluxe Crease Brush is my fav...I use it every single day to apply/blend corrector concealer...and of course the wonderful base shadow brush, small instapop shadow brush, setting brush, contour brush, buffing brush (so great for foundation!) , blush brush...they clean up beautifully and last forever! Great video ❤️
Yes! Please, hit me with the wing liner tutorial/tips. You do such a great job explaining steps & reasonings. Keep up the great work. Thanks for keeping it real for the everyday life community.
Patty Alonso does great tutorials. Very thorough, usually 5 looks 1 pallet. Not crazy out there looks ; if you want that try Beaut Bean 😍
You and Julia Adams are some of my favorites to watch! You guys have different styles but both do gorgeous, wearable real life makeup 💛
I nearly dropped so much $ on complexion brushes on Black Friday, but managed to come to my senses. I use the RT complexion brushes and they are perfectly fine! I don't really enjoy the 'face makeup' element of my make up anyway, I love doing eye makeup so I had already invested in some better brushes there last year (and even then, there are some random eyeshadow brushes that came from who knows where that I've had for what feels like FOREVER that I just irreplaceable to me). I'm so glad I didn't waste so much money on replacing something that didn't need replacing - if I did need to replace them, it would just be a straight repurchase. Thanks for the video. ❤
You should take a look at makeup artists from Israel and tell aviv, they do glam so beautifully there, really classy and sophisticated.
I will do that! I have a big fondness for Russian and Australian MUAs as well ;)
I love Hindash
I think the best lesson I learned when coming into makeup brushes is buy brushes that fit your eye shape I would say I have a good size portion of lid space however my eyes are small and hooded so find brushes the fit that can be sometimes difficult at some points given what type I’m looking for but that’s my advice to those who are starting out 💖💖
Hindash is a super glam make up artist, but he doesn’t use tons of concealer/foundation. He lives in Dubai, so it’s a slightly different style than we are used to in the US.
I second the recommendation for Kennie JD, even if it doesn’t inspire you, you will stay for the Bad Movies and a Beat ( it is so funny)!
Honestly I'm not even interested in this video but I just am REALLY in the mood to listen to Whitney talk so I'm watching anyways LOL anything you talk about is solid content
I have been looking for decent brushes, so the timing is so perfect! 💕
Glad I could help!
Unlike anyone else I follow, your favorites are my favorites. I feel if you could say it like you want to, we would all spend a lot less on makeup. Just stay true to yourself... you will come through. The truth always always reveals itself
Just some additional pros and cons you might want to think about if you consider buying the real techniques brushes after watching this video (I had mine for several years and this is what I learned):
Pros:
- the brush part held up super well, they don't shed or changed shape
- easy to differentiate from other brushes due to the colored handles
Cons:
- the rubbery part of the handle gets sticky over the time and neither soap/water/shampoo or alcohol helps getting rid of it. If you've got a solution for this, please let me know :( but on a positive note, their newer brushes don't have this rubbery part anymore, so make sure to get the newer ones if possible. :)
- some brushes get bigger on the bottom of the handle and it's pretty annoying to store them because of this. The good news though: this also seems to be fixed with their newer brushes! :)
- even though the colored handle is nice to differentiate them from other brushes, it bothered me over time as I now prefer a more calm and cohesive aesthetic when it comes to my vanity
To sum up, if you get the newer ones, they barely have any downsides. So, if you are in need of new brushes, their newer ones are definitely worth trying! :)
Hope it helps some of you to decide- happy holidays and stay healthy! ❤️
Have you tried to wash them with dish cleaner? Also maybe stick like plastic wrap around the rubber area? Or paint them?
@@vulpeadejad7523 haven't thought about that, thank you! :) definitely trying that out!
@@anni4524 let me know how that worked for you. But I am sure paint or like a water proof sticker on top will save them. Good luck!
Hey, I've used dish soap on the abrasive side of a dish sponge to get the stickiness off. I repeat once every few months to avoid them getting sticky again. I've also used Zote soap on the same dish sponge and that works too
@@vulpeadejad7523 just cleaned them tonight with dish soap (on an abrasive sponge as Marissa T. suggested here in the comments) but it didn't work either. But I've noticed that at some of my brushes the rubbery coating is completely worn off, so I probably just need to use them even more until the rubbery part comes off. 😂😅 I'll probably skip paint as I currently only own water-soluble paint. Maybe I should search the internet for some more tips, as I couldn't imagine being the only one with this problem. But I really appreciate that you both took the time to comment and try to help, so thank you for that! ☺️
Get it going girl!! Love love love youuu. Merry Christmas Whitney. 💕😘🙂🎅🎅🎅
Yeah, a winged liner tutorial would be fabulous. Thanks so much! Love your videos
Great video 💟 always a like 👍👍 I like the real technique brushes I've tried and they are soft to and stay soft even after washing them 💜💚💟💛💙
I remember you tweaking your makeup a few months back to suit you better. It looks lovely always. It’s your face do & try what feels good. Right!!??! That’s what Whitney would say!!! Lolol
Whitney you should try using the real techniques flat foundation brush to do your nose contour.
I’ve been hoping you’d make a video like this for a while now... I always see you use so many brushes, great to get a breakdown of them all!
I’m glad you enjoyed!
Awesome video. I use cheap microfiber wash clothes from Amazon to wipe my brushes in between. I use natural hair brushes so I want to wash them as little as possible and the microfiber really grabs on to the excess pigment in a gentle way. 💜
Buffy and wine is me and my friends self-care Saturday, love your videos!
You do your makeup so nicely. You look pretty and never overdone. I would love a tutorial on placement of products you use to contour, especially your nose contour. What brush do you use for your nose contour, and why is it so unique and special? That would be a great video. Thx 😉
There's literally times I use 2 different brushes for my eyeshadow and of course 1 brush for brows and 1 brush for my face. I do feel that with the right brush, you can make even the cheapest the makeup look good :D
I did 3 hauls this Summer, 2 for me 1 for my young granddaughter who's just wading into the makeup pool. BH Cosmetics had an awesome sale on most of their brushes & I LOVE them! Soft, works well & if I really needed more I'd get more but I know when enough is enough! Great video! I remember going on a 14 day cruise with A LOT of my crystals & gemstones supply & forgetting the MOST IMPORTANT TINY, TINY component, the crimp beads. I was SICK! All I could do is make earrings & I wasted all that weight for nothing in our luggage. I now only travel & make earrings only. Took a cruise in January to the Mexican Riviera for 21 days & had a blast. No one on board got sick.
Yes winged liner video. Also I love this look. I have hooded eyes also. I have a hard time with this eye look. Can you do a video in depth ON this look
I love this type of video. Thanks for helping us save our money! ❤️
I bought a big Sigma pro collection last year during their end of year sale, and I really like those brushes but I'd never pay full price for them. I've also picked up some BH brushes this year and I find I like them just as well and they're super affordable.
hi ATHS, which bh brushes did u get? arw you happy w/them?
i waited til BH's Black Friday sale (cuz $ is tight rn) to buy their Zodiac collection & their Smokey Eye collection (both collections totaled $13). I'm still learning how to use those sets but so far so good. good talkin w/ you :)
@@brunom72 I got the zodiac brushes, too! I've also picked up the red-handed fan brush collection and the V4 or 12 flat top foundation brush.
I love playing with different eye shadow looks, but I wouldn't really say I'm good at it yet, either 😂 The best thing we can do is keep practicing, right? Also, Angela Bright's tutorials are really helpful!
@@AllTheHappySquirrels hi again. so yeah angela bright's looks are AH MAZE ING but i need more info & her toots are just too short. her skills are next level tho. is possible to have skill envy?! LOL cuz i think i have that lol. so glad u got the sets that u did. the fan brushes look SO COOL but tbh they scare the ish outta me. but yes, we gotta continue to practice. and maybe one day we can say "i gotta naked face in 3,2,1!" like whitney does (i looooove when she says that!). omlord, i can sure babble...have a gr8 holiday :) x
Picturresque Regina and Alexandra Anele are my favs ❤️ also Isabella for "clean" beauty
Ugh. Your hair 😍😍😍. I have major hair envy.
I love this video comparison! Real Techniques were my first great brushes after the original Origins foundation brush. I still buy their foundation brush for any of my friends who aren’t using one. The RT is the best brow brush besides the BK. The RT brushes are long time faves. You really can’t go wrong with any of them. They clean up so easily and never fall apart.
yesss.. we love to see real techniques getting the hype they deserve. I never buy expensive brushes because I don't see the point when real techniques and elf get the job done for me. Also for youtube suggestions I always watch Mariah Leonard when I'm in search of aesthetic makeup and she doesn't do crazy over the top looks. And if you haven't watched Hung Vango's channel yet you need to because I kid you not it's the best thing to have come out of 2020.
New subbie! Obsessed with your videos!! Would the amber shade be good for me I’m a Mac nc25 neutral with golden undertones to counter with? Thank you🤗❤️
My go to brushes are: one powder brush from wet n wild, one foundation and a mini kabuki brushfrom elf, another from Sonia kashuk, couple from miss a, and some eyeshadow and face brushes from ecotools.
This is a really interesting video idea! I like bringing back the trend of doing both sides of your face differently. As for some inspiration: Abby Williamson, Nispisah - for commentary, humor, makeup (alternative, colorful, grungy looks)/fashion, anti-hauls; Sally Choi and Lauren Mae Beauty - for anti hauls, commentary, and more light, feminine, colorful makeup looks.
Great video I love real techniques brushes! Sis your skin looks airbrushed in this video! 💕
You are stunning! Love your personality and your helpful outlook! 😘
Thank you so much darlin!
Love your videos Whitney! Just FYI the soft background music sounds like a phone ringing and is really distracting. Paulina beauty uses a similar one and it took me forever to figure out what it was!
Thanks for the tip!
Omg I thought that was just me.. i kept pausing the video thinking I was hearing things 😂😂 idc tho she could have anything playing in the background and I would still watch her. She’s amazing ❤️
🙋🏻♀️ I want to see an e’r’day winged liner vid 🙋🏻♀️
This is the best video! I’m extra AF too...even though I always come out looking pretty simple, my routine is complex (three plus steps to everything, haha) but that’s what I like! I laughed out loud when you said your sweats would have makeup all over them...I do that, major, when getting ready! 🥰 😂
Loved this video!!! So helpful!
Makeup artists I follow: hung vango (I think you’ll like his style the most), Patrick ta, danessa myricks, Pat McGrath, Erika la pearl
Love real technique!! You should also try Zoeva brushes, they are amazing xx
They’ve always been on my
Wish list :)
Use dish soap on the scrubby side of a dish sponge and it'll come off
Despite your tiredness you made it through! And that face.....BEAT!!! 🌺
It was such a struggle hahah thanks babe 😘
as a MUA I was called out on my Asterity when it came to brushes but I was able to get the job done properly with my sparse selection & their dupes - tip different colour/patern of tape way down on the end to distinguish dupes - my selection was tiger, leopard, houndstooth tidier & easier, more established looking than nail polish dabs. great vidio. just pitched my pro kit make- up in the trash & set aside brush collection for personal use.
As a newbie beauty person, a few years ago I went straight for real techniques and rarely have the urge or need to stray and try other things. I tend to be disappointed when I do. Real techniques brushes are so well made and easy to maintain and use with multiple textures. They are also so soft and really affordable!!! I’ve tried the makeup geek eye brushes in the past and they were so scratchy they made my eyes irritated and itchy for a day or two after. Real techniques for the win!
That’s literally what I wanted, thank u for this helpful video!
I loved watching an eyeliner video because I have hoodie eyes and I can't even do it. big kisses from Portugal
My absolute favorite brushes are IT Cosmetics, favorite budget brushes are Real Techniques, some of the Moda brand are pretty good too.
Julia Adams MUA here on RUclips is one of my favorite and she posts allot of inspiring looks
I like it that you show your before face without any makeup so that we can follow along. Thank you. Your videos are so helpful that I unsubscribed to all the other make up tutorial artist.
I, much like you, have hundreds of brushes, but I have easily managed a full face on even less than this. I use my foundation brush for the contour, cream blush and bronzer and the powder brush for all powder including bronze, blush and face powder. The expert face brush and their small buffer I use for concealer are probably my favourite RT brushes. When I used to travel (obviously not these days!!) I would never take my WG or any of my expensive ones, I would always take my RT or morphe ones. But in the uk I find RT are pretty expensive for drugstore brushes. They’re nice don’t get me wrong, but elf, morphe, (I find the collabs the best) even wet and wild do some great brushes that work out better value and as good a quality when it comes to some of them.
I love that brush holder! Do you mind sharing where you got it?
Yes I would love to see everyday winged liner. I love RT brushes!!
I as well think about "what if humans had tails?!" .. And that was the best statement! 🙌🤣
I love your blunt honest videos. Bomb vibes only! ❤
I have one hooded eye lid and one that seems to be sent from the makeup gods.. So no matter what I have one eye that ALWAYS looks perfect.. Then the rebel eye l8d that sort of does what I say. Smh whhhyyyy! Lol
Also the videos I watch the most for inspiration are by Julia Adams. I LOVE her esthetic and she does everyday makeup as well as editorial styles at times as well. Love her!
Btw, your videos from 5 years ago are awesome too. I'm loving your current content but I am so glad I watched some of your older videos.
Today, I did my entire base, because I wear cream cheeks with my foundation brush and my fingers (the only way I can control the highlight)... this minimalist thing is so doable- and as an added bonus, everything g melded together and it looks very SKIN.
Next time you use your inglot liner try this little trick...mix a little of your liner with inglot's duraline. The liner glides on like a dream! Learned that one from Jaime French here on RUclips.
I loved this makeup look and I didn’t even notice any "mistakes", but I know we're harder on ourselves. I need new brushes, so thank you for the tips! Have a great holiday! 💜
I'm hella basic and all I use is those brushes that came with my 2 ABH palettes and the Naked honey, plus like 3 brushes I got from an ecotools set I got years ago. I mostly use cream face products and I believe in using your fingers to apply them so I have maybe like 7 brushes in total and I've never felt the need to get more.
So I'm not the only one with abstract art on all my PJ pants! Its such a hard habit to break even when I have brush cleaner. 🙈🤦🏾🤣🤣🤣
I’ve stopped it now but only because I have SO MANY brushes I never use one more than once in a look. Otherwise I would definitely still have the Jackson Pollock PJ pants
Weird thing is I've been an MUA for 11 yrs... I have a ton of brushes especially Luxie, Real Techniques and Eco tools(their flat top 3 brush set is up there with my Nars/MUFE brushes) and still I do this sometimes. Im workin on it 😂
Tutorial on this look PLEASEEEEE! I’m obsessed!
omg yes a new upload! i've been binge watching your videos all week
Thank you so much!!!
@@whitneyhedrick awe np :) and btw is it bad I smudge out my pencil liner using my finger lol? It's free n works for me
I really enjoy my real techniques brushes. My only gripe with them is that the rubberized handle always ends up sticky and gross no matter what I do. I feel like I keep my makeup pretty clean so I don't know why that happens. My sets are from when they first came out so maybe they fixed the problem?
Someone up above said it was fixed and the newer ones no longer use rubber handles
Eye opener! I’ve been thinking of investing in the Scott Barnes brushes- for like 6months now, never even thought to try real techniques. I always thought they would be cheap quality!
they are SO nice! :)
You should try them. It’s very good. I love them.
Scott Barnes is so overrated. He is so expensive after his Vault I lost all respect for the dude & the palette that was $130 or w/e w 8 colors & 2 were black shades! Natasha does $129 like nobodies’ biz. The SB brushes are the best thing he’d done but I’d expect to pay MUCH LESS (eg under $100), for his set not $239USD I do use ev brush in the set except 1 I wish he had fan brush or another eye brush instead of the flimsy highlighter brush. I would not rebuy this brush set if I had all my makeup brushes go up smoke.
Great brushes. I haven’t purchased any high-end brushes yet, but the real techniques brushes I’ve had for the past 2-3 years are still performing really well. The ones I got my mom about 3 years ago, before I started doing my own makeup, still perform wonderfully as well. Still soft, no shedding, the ferrel hasn’t come loose (I’ve had issues with those from other brands like ELF). Real Techniques and eco tools as well have nice, under $10, brushes.
What do you think about doubled ended brushes? I always get confused with how I should be storing them. I like keeping my brushes in a cup but when it’s a double ended brush it’s like...one side gets smooshed in the cup??? So I personally hate them even though the idea is nice??
great video. you are wonderful! thank you for all the tips
I imagine you rushing off, cleansing your face and sitting with all those delicious goodies .... straight after filming this, 😂😂!
Yes please to eyeliner. 🌲💗🌲💗🌲
I’ve loved Real Techniques brushes since I started doing my makeup!!!
I just need one 1 kit and I will have all the brushes shown!
I wish I would have to seen this prior to the 3 brush sets I just bought: Luxie Dreamcatcher set, Colourpop stone cold brushes and Doll10beauty X makeupmolly!
I love brushes and thankfully I'm cheap most I got through ipsy or boxycharm but I have so many but when I do my makeup I try to use a few as possible. I've also learned recently I love brushes more than a sponge.
Gorgeous..n I like to see any tutorial u do
The video I didn’t know I needed 🙏🏽😭❤️
Hope you enjoy!
Another great video! I hope that the coming year brings you all of the joy, love and happiness that you deserve!!!
Omg love ur makeup so beautiful
The JadeyWadey nose contour brush by Luxie is only available if you buy the JadeyWadey set. I reached out to Luxie about that brush this year about it and had to buy the set.
I swear by Real Techniques brushes, especially the originally eye & face sets that I still have & use even though I now own Rephyr & Sonia G brushes. RT has some of my fave face brushes & detail eye brushes--the shapes & sizes are just perfect & I haven't found anything equivelant in "higher end" natural hair brushes. At least nothing I'm willing to pay for. I'm sure a $300 handmade Japanese brush is amazing but I don't get free stuff in PR & I have a real life budget.
Whitney you dont need a bunch of brushes
me headed to the story since mine are all yuck and beyond saving ...I need to do the do and stock up LMAO
Do you happen to know of any good make-up carriers or bags? My brushes fall out constantly when I open up my carrier.
🥰🥰🥰🥰 I have like 10 face brushes but a lot of eye brushes I haven’t bought new brushes in months !
Same!
my PJ pants are covered in makeup, too. I thought I was the only one who did that
Such an era of my life 😂
hi ya whitney. this was EGG-ZACT-LEE 1 of the videos i was hoping to see from this channel esp since i just bought some brushes on black friday from the morphe & bh cosmetics people. also, i just heard you do your ICONIC "...naked face in 3,2,1!!"....and life is good :) xxx x's a xillion
Hahaha! Thank you babe :)
Love it! 👏
I have the old real techniques eye set. I use the kinda fluffy brush to apply Gerard Cosmetics clean canvas - I love that eye primer - heard about on Jen Luv. I’ve got so many brushes high end and affordable...my aging eyes need brushes that don’t tug. 😂
i have quite a few brushes in my collection and its the real techniques ones that i use on a daily go to basis
I’d watch the winged eyeliner tutorial!
I’m a big fan of Katie Jane Hughes and Danessa Myricks. They are both makeup artists that are all about teaching and sharing techniques, very similar to yourself. I love them.
KJH is not on the “buy all the makeup” train which I appreciate.
Ps- I am traveling and forgot some brushes. I picked up one of these sets!
I needed to watch this, I have far too many brushes...I’m obsessed by them 🙈
Happens to the best of us :)
Smitha Deepak is an amazing creator who focuses on application techniques and making you look effortlessly beautiful
Yes please, do a winged liner for hooded eyes!
I not sure if I am missing it.... I don't see the link to the RT brush sets only the sponge. Can anyone help me out with that? Thanks!
I love Bailey Sarian - she is cute and quirky and down to earth!
Is that a robe you are wearing? Where did you get it?
You should try the Elf Beautifully Precise Precision Airbrush Stipple 105 brush. It's AMAZING for cream products. It's the same brush that Samantha Ravndahl raves about. I got mine off ebay.
Hi Witney, was that a Buxom blush?
Yes... Dolly to be exact :)
Great video!
Take a look at Nettart, Pazit Horesh Saig,
Ronyovadia, Maria Drapkin Promakeup (all amazing artists from Israel) and Celine Bernaerts.
I love Mel Thompson, Morgan Turner, Kinkysweat, The Fancy-Faced to name a few. Their looks are my style, their shadow application is amazing, & I love the make-up products they use. I think you will feel inspired by them, your look is similar to theirs a bit ☺️❤️
I have several Real Techniques brushes from 2016 and they’re in perfect shape!
