Yes it is totally safe as per my experience, make sure to purchase a good quality gas canister, cheap canisters may leak.. I use 'Hans' here in India..

Yes it is highly recommended. Sleeping bags are made-up of very soft material doesn't protect from stones and hard particles in the ground below.. Even you can use yoga mat..
