- The Police were one of the hottest groups on planet earth when they arrived in NZ for a one-off show at Western Springs stadium in early 1984. The concert was marred by riotous headline-making disorder after many punters piled though a torn-down fence into the stadium, stretching the resources of their local namesakes. In this rare clip, the three band members of The Police reveal their musical aspirations and ponder the future of the group...enjoy!
wow this was really great footage and interviews, as popular as they are people really still don't appreciate how musically talented each one of them are. On top of Sting's thoughtful and rich lyrics , their command of their instruments or chops so to speak are second to none. Stewart may be the best rock drummer of all time. I can listen to all three of them talk all day long , so focused and well spoken, god I miss the 80's LOL
amazing how a band before social media, internet, and only recorded 5 albums can get to be so big. biggest band of all time, for a band not around that long. amazing impact, still felt today
I was a kid as a huge Police fan, so I couldn't go to concerts. These RUclips videos are gems. Thanks!
@Margit Ouma - Same here! However I was lucky and at least got to see them *once*, when they came to Wellington, NZ on their Reunion Tour. :-)
I love Stewart Copeland. Brilliant conversationalist and--in my opinion--the finest pop/rock drummer ever.
You can tell Andy HATED the idea of the back-up singers, as he had also disliked the addition of brass to the Ghost tour. He was right on both counts. I think the coolest thing about the 2007 reunion was the fact that they did it as a 3 piece again. The fact that three guys could create such a full and original sound was part of what made them so special.
Jolar70 really!!! you got all that from a seasoned professional interview giver...hmm
+Jolar70 they had sampled backing vocals on the reunion tour
really?? tell me more
really? are you sure? why?
obviously all the changes that were happening correspond to what happened then, especially with Sting (he recorded the Brass on Gosth and the choirs were done and at Police the choirs on many topics are very important for the musical phrases), he wanted that the sound will evolve, the show also, ... it was possible to see what came (here the separation is already appreciated) and definitely if, with the sound of today and the new arrangements the tour of 07-08 maybe it was the best concerts of them, leaving aside the first two years that were "something else"
Stewart, still King Kong of drumming, in 2020
getting big is a side effect of enjoying yourself... thank you sting.
Great interviews with the band. Always wished they would have cranked out one more
album after Synchronicity but they're forever music legends.
They already knew it was over at this point. They were just counting down the shows to the end.
Very interesting, I loved this. They are down-to-earth and likeable, there's none of the pretentious or aggressive atmosphere that one feels in so many interviews around "Synchronicity"-time.
I think maybe because they'd had a break from each other after Dec 1983.
The peak of Sting’s hair
funny part is, his brother that looks just like him, has a full head of hair :(
LOL! :-)) Me, I always think of him having long hair as its peak, in the late 80's :-)
I was at this concert. A Canadian mid hitch hiking round new Zealand and oz. Canadian flags flying for Bryan Adams and a chance to see the Police.
Yep.. I was there too. Great Concert :)
amazing how big a band they were. no internet, no social media...
it was better before
There was MTV. They got a lot of coverage on MTV when The Synchronicity Tour began. The played Every Breath You Take constantly on MTV. Yet they were HOT from their very first LP. Sting had a voice that was as amazing as if is now yet he was much nicer back then and now he is somewhat a SNOB. Stewart Copeland was always full of himself with a cocky attitude. They kicked ass with LP's year after year and THAT was AMAZING!!! Outlandos d'Amour (1978)Reggatta de Blanc (1979)Zenyatta Mondatta (1980)Ghost in the Machine (1981) Check out their The Police Around the World Tour (1977-80) and you will be pleasantly pleased. Just very cool with so much energy & personality. Sting was sexy as hell. I just never saw what he saw in Trudie Styler yet it was enough that he left his first wife. His son Joseph has his dads singing voice and he also looks like his dad. Check his old band out; Fiction Plane.
I love The Police 👮♀️ 🎶 music 🎵 🎶 🎼 blessings from the Sonoran Desert 🌵 Mexico 🇲🇽
humility and class always seems to be an aspect of greatness.thanks!!!
3 hot backing singers for a three piece band...wonder why...:)
A young Phillip Schofield interviewing when he was starting out on New Zealand TV. Learning his stuff before the trip back home and working at the BBC.
Best concert ever was The Police Picnic in Oakville Ontario Canada August 23 1981. The Police, The Specials, The Go-Gos, Iggy Pop, Killing Joke, Oingo Boingo, The Payolas, Nash the Slash. Best fucking concert ever!!!
An I.R.S. fest!
Interesting interviews and cool editing!
great documentary!! i ve got that concert that night in auckland on tape...great energy to say the least
Prince's 1999 album playing in the background during Stewart's interview....
Let’s pretend we’re married is the actual song. Cool catch there.
Wow!!!! Simply wonderful!!! Thanks a lot for posting the link of that jewel... I am from Peru, by the way, exist a legend one young Inca prince went by boat with his warriors and wisdoms to the Polynesia ("Rapa Nui" and "New Zealand") using the "Sea Current" nowadays called "Humbolt Current" (Coasts of Peru are in front of "Rapa Nui" and "NZ") This type of video footage needs to be reunite into a 4 DVD Pack probably called THE POLICE - RECOVERING THEIR JEWELS"
What a great interview. Thanks for posting. I had no idea about a riot in NZ. They were an amazing band & I really loved seeing them on the reunion tour. I was one hoping they would put out new material.
A very revealing, fascinating Police document. Thank you, slydogmania.
Wow, Sting had already really mellowed out by this point. He does sound a little down too, I guess he knew this was the end of The Police.
Thanks for post...sting was about to make dunne movie...and all the planet was happy in their lives !
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhh...........no more commercials
Excellent interviewer !!!
Sting knew then that this was the last tour, seemed a bit down. The others had their projects too. But little did they know what Sting's plans were.
...And look at where each of them have become 35 years later...Incredible...Shazam!!!
🤣🤣🤣 the looks on Sting's, Stewart's and Andy's faces for the Haka Dance
Philip Schofield!
This is awesome!
Never seen it b4,
Sting, where are you tonite ... are you safe and warm ???
8:20 when Sting sings into the mic stand aha
Sing has a nice accent...
Geordie
@@hellobonappetit1657 Know what I mean?
If you look at 0:27 one of the shots was on Danny Quatrochi's photography book "The Police - Confidential" (The Police at Auckland Airport)
Following on from my "newzealandpromoter" channel comments - as nice as it is to see this - it's also a sort of tragedy - have just checked with TVNZ (the broadcaster) and most of this segment has *not been archived* by the broadcaster. So now it only exists online in.... gasp... *240p* (whyyyyyyyyyyyy in this day and age). A tear-worthy tragedy :( Lesson, people: *Never* throw away your VHS tapes until the material has been properly digitized.
....actually I just heard back from them again and they do still have it - too bad I don't have a budget to work with...but at least it's not lost forever....
it was played numerous times about 5 years back on a TVNZ channel called "Heartland" , which was a channel that played old tv shows etc... It was part of a nz concert special that included vintage footage of deep purple , kiss , dire straits, bob marley plus more , most of it has popped up on youtube .
They were so over the whole thing by this point and just counting down the days when they could just scatter to the four winds.
They weren't over it. Sting was over it.
ABSOLUTELY RIGHT !!!
I can see the guys after god knows how long a flight thinking I need to take a leak or have a smoke. WTF?
Good memories!
Unfortunately, as we know, they never made another album.
For some reason, I thought the name of the OV was titled "NY" for New York, so when I saw the natives in the beginning I chuckled and thought for a moment that NY had devolved quicker than I had assumed.
This is great.
phillip schofield is interviewing them? he must have barely been 21. Strange..i thought his first gig was with the beeb.
ADOREI !!!
Omg "Let's Pretend We're Married" on the PA system. NZ, I wouldn't have thought you were that trendy then lol
0:18 - 0:38 sounds like me on the toilet every morning
Great upload! As for the reporters, the group is called THE Police though, not Police. never rob a band of their definite article.
+Jason Lefler You'd better not watch many more vintage era interviews, then - for some reason a lot of them did this back in the day!
+newzealandpromoter thank you for the tip! Also, are you by chance the New Zealand promoter that Stewart mentions as Sting sings Roxanne in Tokyo on one of the videos shot in early 1981?
As I recall, Sting was getting pneumonia because someone hadn't closed a door to the back of the stage.
Sting felt they should shut the door,
as Stewart sang,
"for the sake of the New Zealand promoter..."
I'm not that promoter as such, but well done for identifying the reference point - which is completely correct! One of my favourite "Roxanne" performances and one of the first I ever got to know as a Police fanatic.
+newzealandpromoter Nice! I was always hunting down video and audio from Police tours and that one reference stood out by a mile! It always seemed that they missed a golden opportunity to release a live DVD box set showing each stage of their concert career.
It could've started with Hatfield Polytechnic 1979 and ended with Shea Stadium 1983 or even a bit beyond that show.
People forget what a special group they were, especially in concert.
+Jason Lefler Sting Stew and Andy all have clips from there shows from Day 1 to the last shows. Like for example, Sting has clips from years ago and he has them locked away. Stew recently pulled out a clip of Wrapped Around Your Finger's performance from the June 6th, 2007 performance in Seattle recently for an interview, and Andy used bits from the Cormiskey Park show from July 23rd, 1983 for his movie CSLY, Surviving the Police, so all the shows are all still around but of course we will probally never see em
new stuff!
i think at 10:50 sting was talking about gene simmons from KISS
15 year old Kiwi Gatecrasher, Yeeha! The Police Live! No Charges! 😉
Good on ya, mate! :-))
Everyone used to jump the fence at the back....
Just checking one more time that you really did get rid of the original VHS tape? I just don't want to believe that anyone would digitize this lovely, rare analog material but only go as far as a very, very lossy 240p and then destroy the source! Please let me know if you managed to find the original tape - I am working on a massive Police documentary project. Cha!
+newzealandpromoter Cant wait to see it
Andy. Stands funny !
Yo! We spoke by email a long time ago about this...Are you totally sure you never kept the tape or the original raw data? I am making a documentary - makes me weep to thin this amazing footage only exists at 240p on youtube :( Please have a check and let me know...?
you have my number? I have my number?
14:20 😍😍😍😍
The police are safely in Auckland!!!🤣🤣🤣
Are the girls Dolette, Michelle and Tessa?
maybe on was Janis Pendarvis (sp?)
No
Ah may I just add that Sting's legs are the hottest (male legs) in the world. : )
LOL. Love that voiceover NZ accent. Roilly roilly gud, eh?
Good to see Philip Schofield has a kiwi cousin
Aw looks like recently deceased Michael gudinski at 1:45 mark. 😔
I love how Sting bullshits the interviewer, telling him they met as studio musicians and decided to form a group.
I though so as well since they joke a lot but I remember that they did a gig for Eberhard Schoener.
The first bit of the Harka sounded like a female tennis match???
"How did sting join the police force" haha
they are crazy... ahahahahahahahahaha
:10:50 ~ How 'bout a flying LAi~de ? ahhh, no, that would definitely detrakt from the MusiK ...
Philip Schofield... sounds even more annoying with an antipodean accent. This was just before his official processing in the UK.
I cringe everytime I see the natives spoiling things from the get-go!!!
Stephen Riley do you mind not being a racist? It's not that hard
@@Fitzroyfallz oh please just because he doesn't like something that somebody does in the context of their culture doesn't make him a racist. Save that for your tweets
A Racist...Now that is a grossly-overused, knee-jerk, hollow word...Prove I am a Racist!
How so, exactly?
00:18 - Sounds like people having sex.
