Dragut, the Turkish pirate who ransacked the city of Cullera
Piracy was a constant throughout the 16th century. From the middle of the century onwards, subsequent attacks and looting by the Turks and Berbers on various parts of our geography were frequent. And on May 25, 1550, it was Cullera's turn at the hands of the Turkish pirate Dragut, Barbarossa's lieutenant. In the cave - pirate museum of Cullera where we can visit a unique exhibition on piracy in the 16th century.
The surprise attack caught the people of Cullera off guard and the pirate obtained an important loot in goods and prisoners. The troops sent to save the situation were unable to prevent the pirate Dragut from using the hostages to increase his loot. It is at this moment that the legend comes into play since, according to what is said, it was in this cave where the payment of ransoms to Dragut in exchange for the release of the hostages took place. From that moment, Cullera was practically depopulated due to the danger of continuous threats.
Only the construction and rehabilitation of the defensive systems returned security to the population and a return to normal life.
Dragut, el pirata turco que saqueó la ciudad de Cullera
La piratería fue una constante a la largo del siglo XVI. A partir de mitad de centuria, fueron frecuentes los ataques y saqueos subsiguientes por parte de los turcos y berberiscos sobre diversos puntos de nuestra geografía. Y el 25 de mayo de 1550, le tocó el turno a Cullera a manos del pirata turco Dragut, lugarteniente de Barbarroja. En la cueva - museo pirata de Cullera donde podremos visitar una exposición singular sobre la piratería en el siglo XVI.
El ataque por sorpresa, cogió desprevenidos a los cullerenses y el pirata obtuvo un importante botín en bienes y prisioneros. Las tropas enviadas para salvar la situación no pudieron evitar que el pirata Dragut utilizara los rehenes para incrementar su botín. Es en este momento cuando entra en juego la leyenda puesto que, según se cuenta, fue en esta cueva en donde tuvo lugar el pago de los rescates a Dragut a cambio de la liberación de los rehenes. Desde ese momento, Cullera quedó prácticamente despoblada ante el peligro de las continuas amenazas.
Solamente las construcciones y rehabilitaciones de los sistemas defensivos devolvieron a la población la seguridad y la vuelta a la vida habitual.
