He's the one in the middle of the stage in every bjm concert. He's the real frontman of the band, Anton is the one who composes and writes the music but he is the one who creates the iconic image of the band. Always standing there with style shaking his tambourine, what a fucking rock star!
Saw BJM in my hometown of Wellington, New Zealand earlier this year, swaying and tranced out on MDMA. They were outstanding! Sounded incredible. They weren't as loud as I thought they'd be which turned out great because it made the sound mix impeccable. Could hear each and every intricate sound crystal clear. Joel was a total winner on stage. Was clearly loving it, big smile on his face, in the zone. The guy is an amazing percussionist. There's an art to it and he is quite the artist. Major kudos to him! :)
the fact that joel has made a life for himself from playing tambourine in such a relevant band and is still being viewed on you tube makes a mockery of you people that say this is sad...why is it sad? At least he has made his mark on this short life and that's more than most can say. The total essence of the punk ethic of taking whatever talent you have or dont have depending on your viewpoint and staking your place in the world.
At one of the BJM shows I saw Joel was playing so hard during the song Yeah Yeah that his tambourine smashed into a bunch of pieces. Being in the front I caught a big chunk of it mid air. Anton signed it after the show. Its one of my most prized possessions. I’ll get Joel to sign it too one day if I run into him after a show.
This is the instrument that ties everything together. Rhythm, beat, vocals and guitar. So strong and subtle at the same time, you may not be aware of it. Mad respect for Joel. 👏👏👏👏👏
I do not know how Joel does his job....have you ever played the tambourine throughout a whole song? It's like....or actually IS hitting your hand really hard with a piece of wood. He does that for hours every night...his nerves must be completely dead in his hand.
I discovered Brian Jonestown Massacre from watching boardwalk empire. I can’t understand why they were not more popular. They are/were great. Joel is one of the reasons why. They have such a unique sound that everyone in the band puts everything they have into it.
I agree, they have not stopped putting out great hits including their newest album! I think one of the reasons they never took off mainstream was they were bat shit crazy back in the day and were known for walking off stage, picking fights, being difficult to work with, and just acting like a bunch of psychopaths lol (perhaps mainly Antone) but they definitely seem to have mellowed out
I was fascinating watching this Tambourine Man behavior in the stage. The rest of players of a band are in some way behind their instruments and of course the vocalist bring also a character on the stage but Tambourine Man is almost "naked". So, I think he needs a lot of guts to stand there with his tambourine. Joel is a class act.
i love this band, i really really do. Anton newcombe has opened upp new pathways in my brain ( as i myself is on the go to make some music to this world) but what i always unconsciousley pay attention to, is how very important the tambourine is to the music in the brian jonestown massacre, with all my heart and soul i say salute to you tambourine man! you are extremely crucial to this band, and may you forever have the role for the brian jonestown massacre as you have
This is why Joel is usually the favorite member of BJM. If it was Anton’s idea to have him front and center, that was a brilliant move. Joel’s personality, style, and on stage presence draws people in. If you go through any comment section on a BJM video, most comment their love for this guy.
jOEL U MAKE TAMBOURINES REAL TO ME!! It is an instrument that maybe we don't always appreciate . Hoel you so make me love the tambourine "Hey Mr Tambourine Man" you are wonderful!!
He was just young and high and hanging out with Anton in the 90s who was without a doubt higher than him at all times. Yet they still continue to crank out incredible rock and roll music. Love Joel, and Anton can be abrasive but he's undoubtedly a great songwriter.
I'd like to hear some TBJM songs without tambourine, I bet they would lose a lot of their magic. And Joel seems like such a nice and funny guy, loved him on Dig! Edit: And his solo album, Apple Bonkers, is pretty good too.
The last time I checked, we don't have a whole lot of songs that feature the tambourine. And I'd be doing myself a disservice and every member of this band, if I didn’t perform the HELL out of this!
@T1C2A3F4 "Nailing Honey To The Bee". One of my favorite BJM tunes actually. There is a studio version on the "Tepid Peppermint Wonderland" compilation that's really worth getting.
A very simple and very complex instrument at the same time. I sure as h_ll couldn't play one, especially as well as real musicians can. Listen to the lyrics of the song Mr. Tambourine Man. An instrument that the first humans probably used to create the first songs on.
There is that scene in Dig! with him making out with (I think Peter Davies). Of course that doesn't necessarily mean anything. I have wondered about his sexuality as well but in my opinion it adds to his mystique.
I would like to be the flavor and the little extra important spice for epic bands like BJM or Happy Mondays and make a living from it and be loved for it. But cowbell? 😅Rock On!
I play the tambourine - with my whole body! - and it's always fun when I play with people and they get hip to the fact that it's a real instrument, and that it takes some real skill to play! some bozo always grabs my tambourine and starts bangin' on it, thinking they're "playing " it - hilarious! no, it's not everyone else making the song suck, it's YOU! this ain't kindergarten, pal!
He's the one in the middle of the stage in every bjm concert. He's the real frontman of the band, Anton is the one who composes and writes the music but he is the one who creates the iconic image of the band. Always standing there with style shaking his tambourine, what a fucking rock star!
He really gives BJM a pull

Absolutely an essential part of the band both visual and musically!
Joel.....Front and centre...Where he belongs!!

Anybody who thinks this is sad is retarded.
You wouldn’t have Brian Jonestown massacre with out Joel playing that tambourine,
Rite on man
Those people are idiots, because honestly Joel is my favorite band member!
This man is a total legend in my eyes. He's so essential visually and musically to this great band we call the BJM!
The only band with a prime front vocal tambourine man, who performs the greatest body language and attitude. i can watch them for hours and hours.

I Agree.
Yes. An underrated art form!
This guy is the best ever. The Hendrix of the tambourine!
The Keith Moon of tambourine... The original Mr. Tambourine Man
Dan D. Warhol Well, he needs to start smashing them more man! :)
Bruce Langhorne who passed away last year was Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man.
motorengine.wordpress.com/2012/10/25/bob-dylans-mr-tambourine-man/
Does Joel Gion have a tambourine tech?
Hendrix was the Joel of his time
Joul tambourines deserves to be in the rock & roll museum.
even what's left of the oldest ones!
He checked me out many times at Amoeba. I never wanted to annoy him by asking for an autograph, but he was always the sweetest guy ever.
best tambourine documentary out there folks.

this man is the soul of the band, i love joel.
@Karl Morris ufffff, man!
why the are not famous, its a total sound bomb
I love this band....
They seem like the last surviving rockers from the 1990's that haven't sold out.
Deftones as well
Pavement
I do not know how Joel does his job....have you ever played the tambourine throughout a whole song? It's like....or actually IS hitting your hand really hard with a piece of wood. He does that for hours every night...his nerves must be completely dead in his hand.
I use my leg. It leaves a bruise, thats for sure.
I discovered Brian Jonestown Massacre from watching boardwalk empire. I can’t understand why they were not more popular. They are/were great.

Joel is the man. Just a cool cat with a good heart. And a damn fine tambourine player.
the whole 'tude dude
Joel probably has a killer record & music collection..
Funny and bright guy.....
I didn't even knew i needed this
fucking love this good hearted dude..would love to have a sitdown conversation
Joel’s work with the tambourine is awesome. He makes it very musical and it’s an integral part of the BJM.
i love this band, i really really do. Anton newcombe has opened upp new pathways in my brain ( as i myself is on the go to make some music to this world) but what i always unconsciousley pay attention to, is how very important the tambourine is to the music in the brian jonestown massacre, with all my heart and soul i say salute to you tambourine man! you are extremely crucial to this band, and may you forever have the role for the brian jonestown massacre as you have
I can just imagine Anton saying, "I don't want to be front and center, you do it Joel."
then, "Just me and my tambourine? Yeah, I can make that work!"
Front & center stage while he travels the world with a worldwide revered band...not too shabby🙌 a life for this jingle jangle man🤩
i am form a little country in south america, and i was so inspired in this man, he rocks
Love u Joel. Your even temper allowed Anton to create…bless you hon. You are so loved.
400 years later Joel’s still my rock and roll hero
I always wonder how much his hand hurts.
ogosh, i just see this interview 10 years after its release.....thanks for it anyway
I saw Joel play a few nights ago and got a new appreciation for what he does

No band brings out the haters like BJM. Anton makes good music. Yeah, he imitates the 60's bands, so what? He is good at it.
Imitates is such an understatement though. Anton reinvented that sound and made it better than it ever was before.
Slim Shysty its impossible to imitate art.
jo man
got it
It is done all the time. Some are better than others. Anton makes music that sounds new and old. A nice trick.
This is my favourite thing ever
"Nailing Honey to the Bee" is one of my favorite songs by BJM, Cool video, very interesting and so well done
Big like for this majestic tambourine man! 😎👏🏼
Superb doc about a superb multilevel band
You should mass produce your own TAMBOURINE'S JOEL
The Joel Gion signature tambourine? I'd buy one.
3:04 What is the name of the song they're playing here?
"Nailing Honey To The Bee"
mr tambourine man steals the stage, definition of coolness
Changing the world, one tambourine beat at a time.
jOEL U MAKE TAMBOURINES REAL TO ME!! It is an instrument that maybe we don't always appreciate . Hoel you so make me love the tambourine
"Hey Mr Tambourine Man" you are wonderful!!
0:25 como se llama ese tema que suena de fondo?
Mazzy Star and BJTM are the reason why I love tambourines! They sound fantastic!
Sometimes you need a member of the band who completes the circle, & adds to the spirit. Happy Mondays had Bez
anyone know the name of the song starting on 0:55?
The Dilettantes - The Whole World
How many people are known for playing the tambourine? He really needs his own line..
Thats it, I'm selling my guitars and going all in on percussion. Joel Gion is about 673% more rock and roll than any guitar player, ever.
Joel!!! Best Tambourine Man!! I’m available to be his “Tambourine Helper” LoL
BEST JOB EVER!! 😍
1:00 - a cat running from tambourines.
What is the song at 4:48 anyone?
He put out such a sic album.
I love you, Joel and musicianship.
Does anyone know where I can find this full performance of the short clips of nailing honey to the bee?
Oh how I love you Joel, your just the best. I think every band should have a Joel in it
What’s the song there plying at the start
There's nothing better then an aging badass

He used to be so crazy
cnaficy like pourin dish soap down his pants crazy?
He was just young and high and hanging out with Anton in the 90s who was without a doubt higher than him at all times. Yet they still continue to crank out incredible rock and roll music. Love Joel, and Anton can be abrasive but he's undoubtedly a great songwriter.
Remember him off his head with the greatest lamb chops in the world giving out about Peter Hayes leaving the band in Dig?
What is the intro song they are playing live
I LOVE JOEL GION Joel Gion He is a really nice guy and really talented and funny!
What is this bjm song?
If u dont have EVERY BJTM album.....GO OUT RT NOW AND GET THEM!!!
but where's the green tambourine???
I'd like to hear some TBJM songs without tambourine, I bet they would lose a lot of their magic. And Joel seems like such a nice and funny guy, loved him on Dig!
Edit: And his solo album, Apple Bonkers, is pretty good too.
You’re a delight Joel
Legend
The last time I checked, we don't have a whole lot of songs that feature the tambourine. And I'd be doing myself a disservice and every member of this band, if I didn’t perform the HELL out of this!
Such a genuinely nice guy.
the drumbeat of the song sounds like disorder by joy division
I heard a song by bjm that the whole begging sounded like "she lost control" by joy division.... I forgot the name of it tho
+Angelo Deleon yeah, "this is the one thing we did not want to have happen"
Joel is still the Man and hasn't become the Man he fought against back in the day! Still hip and cool!
adorable video
The look on his face at 0:46 is fuckign hysterical.
Joel must be the coolest person in music industry. ; )
Where do you get them Joel? Where do you buy your tambourines?
At Ted's Tambourine Emporium, of course.
@T1C2A3F4 "Nailing Honey To The Bee". One of my favorite BJM tunes actually. There is a studio version on the "Tepid Peppermint Wonderland" compilation that's really worth getting.
Your the best Joel, I'll see you in Phoenix & Denver!!!!! 2013 !!!!
You rock Joel!!!!!
The Spokesman For The Revolution. The coolest cat in RnR history. Up there with Brian, Keith Moon... Just so bad ass.
He used to jam with Bez. I wish they had recorded those sessions.
What´s the name of the first song?
at 0:10? "Nailing Honey To The Bee"
Just too cute to not be on stage. 🖤
A very simple and very complex instrument at the same time. I sure as h_ll couldn't play one, especially as well as real musicians can. Listen to the lyrics of the song Mr. Tambourine Man. An instrument that the first humans probably used to create the first songs on.
How did this all happen??
Joel is forever my favourite
Name the first song!
the entire time i was watching dig! i was thinking "is joel gay? he has to be gay"
+b sher - How and why does that matter to anything, unless you want to date him?
+b sher haha. didn't see that one coming!
oh yeah, he cracks me up. as much as i hate anton, i love joel.
There is that scene in Dig! with him making out with (I think Peter Davies). Of course that doesn't necessarily mean anything. I have wondered about his sexuality as well but in my opinion it adds to his mystique.
wouldn't the sounds of those tambourines tumbling down the road sound like heaven?
Now I want a tambourine.
The most hipster member of the most hipster band that has ever existed, take that as an insult or compliment
Right on!!!!
Simple is as Simple Can Do.
since when does dwight k. schrute play the tambourine?
this man is an absolute hero
0:50 Joel's wet dreams be like
God I love that guy
