Never heard of this film until now. Thank you for highlighting this Joe, I hope you’re doing well. Keep up the great work in discussing films like this that many probably don’t know existed until now. Take care!
I was just talking about this with my brother! Because we have a high tolerance for bad movies and low tolerance for bad books, we were talking about where we got movies from. We got Trial and Error as a free dvd with a papa John's pizza
Jonathan Lynn co-created and co-wrote the legendary British sitcom Yes, Minister which co-starred Nigel Hawthorn. He also directed Clue. He moved in the same circles as Monty Python and thr Goodies.
I'd be surprised if this American guy knows Yes Minister/Prime Minister, you'd probably have to tell him Nigel Hawthorne is the old guy from Demolition Man, there's a mystery to solve, how did Nigel end up starring opposite Stallone and Snipes?
that "sit down Mr. Rietti" line just lives in my head rent free for whatever reason. I loved this movie, my brother and I quoted it often, and looking back, it's during peak hotness Charlize Theron too. 10/10
In truly amazed that a lot of these were not cult classics. So many great movies that are forgotten about. You are so great for letting us 40 (or so) somethings remember them
I actually watched this in theater back in the 90s. There was nothing else to watch and I wanted to waste a few hours so I just went in blind. And was pleasantly surprised.
Jonathan Lynn has a habit of directing Almost Cult Classics like this and Greedy, Clue is a FULL BLOWN cult classic, but this was the movie that gave me my crush on Charlize Theron. Plus the court scenes are legitimately hilarious.
Thanks for the reference to "Unstrung Heroes" I loved that film when I was younger. Also spootted a My Cousin Vinney link with the actor Austin Pendleton, who played the public defender.
The fact this movie exists literally took me by surprise. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I have a really extensive knowledge of movies and on top of that, I’m a huge fan of Seinfeld, and I have never ever heard of this movie.
WOW! Memory unlocked! I remember that "Leading! Over ruled?" segment from the TV spots i saw back in the day. I completely forgot about this movie but thanks for reminding me!
For some reason I also remember the scene in the commercial where Jeff Daniels' character is breathing in and out of a paper bag. Brains are weird like that.
Always good to see vids like these on movies I haven't heard of, giving me something new to look into and probably shed new light for probably a new audience.
@HatsOffEntertainment Thanks for talking about this one I seen it on the shelf of my local library for years but never checked it out I just watched it last night and it’s very good and funny thanks
I thought I was the only one who remembered this movie!!! Fun fact: My dad took me to see this when I was a kid and they were doing some kinda publicity stunt where Michael Richards was there trying to break into the theater and got “arrested” 😂
I was on the fence about this film for years and you sold me with this video. I am going to see if I can find the DVD soon to add it to my personal library.
tragically. and yet, we learned absolutely nothing. Probably because the only people in a position to police or change the judicial system are... part of the judicial system. oops. forgot a couple checks and balances there.
@@dnasty312 Indeed. And sadly nothing was learned from the lesson it gave, the warning about ridiculously corrupt courts and the total lack of oversight (funny how the only ones who can get you in legal trouble is the court system, so they can do whatever they want)
The funny thing about Trial and Error is I remember seeing one trailer for it and then I never saw anything else ever again. I never saw it in a rental store, I never saw it on TV. It's like it just disappeared.
Been telling a friend about this one for years. About time I actually show him. This movie is the quintessence of movies whose posters you saw at the rental but few ever actually rented it.
Found a VHS of this in a thrift store a few months ago. I had never heard of it but picked it up out of curiosity to see some of Michael Richard's non-Seinfleld work. Was pleasantly surprised with how solid it was. Very much worth the $1 I spent!
I only got round to seeing this one a few months ago. I really enjoyed it. I didn't know Michael Richards from Seinfeld, this was the first thing Iv'e seen him in, and I liked him a lot. I love Jeff Daniels in anything. A fun movie that doesn't QUITE hit the mark of great for me, probably not one I'd watch again, but I did enjoy it. A hell of a lot more than Play It To the Bone, anyway, which I watched before Trial and Error. Nice palate cleanse
I remember my dad and I went to see this thinking it was "Kramer pretends to be a lawyer" movie, which the trailers actually played that up. We were both disappointed
I hope Joe Ramoni review "The Big Bus" from 1976 for "Almost Cult Classic". "The Big Bus" was directed by James Frawley who 3 years later he direct "The Muppet Movie" (1979).
I really liked this movie, other than the romance subplots (though I was pretty young when I watched this). Amazed to hear it's out of print. We might have the VHS somewhere in a box...
Man, I wish that Airheads would count for this series. It’s probably too well known for it to count, but I really enjoy Michael Richard’s performance there (even if it sometimes falls into Kramer doing Die Hard). Plus, it came out at a time when the main trio was smaller. Sandler was still on SNL, Brendan Fraser (not Frasier) did Encino Man and Steve Buscemi is great in it.
I got this from Papa Johns in 2007 for a freebie they were giving out, and one of my choices was this so i said 'ill take the kramer movie', i still have it!
i only saw part of it yrs ago i like the par where he needed some solid color shoes for court so he used a black marker to color the white parts of his black and white shoes.
Jeff Daniels is a brilliant straight man comedian, dude rides that line between comedy and drama perfectly
And totally redeems himself!
Didn't know this existed. Man, there are so many movies out there. Thank you, I'll save this video for after the 1st watch.
Mid-budget B-movie comedies of the 80’s/90’s/00’s are so fascinating to research for some reason. My watchlist is constantly growing.
Let me know where you find it. Apparently it is out of print and not available for streaming anywhere.

For those interested, this movie is currently available for free on RUclips on the "Nostalgia Video" channel. I couldn't find it anywhere else.
DVD is on warez sites. But that's the only thing. No 1080p European web rips
Nice one Hunter, cheers mate!
Glad it's available but, after watching this overview, I'll pass unless someone randomly mentions it in passing (now likely 😅)..
I knew this would appear eventually. I saw it when I worked at a theater, obscure even then. It went into the void after it left.
It should be a double feature with 'Chairman of the Board,' the Carrot Top comedy. I wouldn't be surprised if that popped up on this channel as well.
Years ago Papa John's had a promotion where you would get a free DVD with your pizza, and this was one of the films they gave out. Still have my copy.
Had that promotion in my area back in the 2000s, but at Pizza Hut! That's how I discovered Weekend At Bernie's 😂
I bought mine at a thrift store!
McDonald's used to occasionally do this with VHS tapes in the 80s/90s. That's how I got Mr Mom.
Haha i got the DVD from papa johns that's how I saw this movie back then and always remembered it
My mom found this for cheap at a toys r us
Michael Richards career in the 90s was actually full of gems

Perfect timing for this video as it falls on the week of Michael Richards' press tour for his new book "Entrances & Exits!"
I forgot about this one! The whole “sugar” defense was hilarious. I was cackling over Rip’s testimony about the Tootsie Roll. 😅
Here's something interesting: Benny is the cousin of Charlie's future mother-in-law who is never seen. Rip Torn's cousin IRL is Sissy Spacek 😮

I agree 100%. The spider/shoe fire scene gets me every time lol!
"Welcome to hell biiiiiiitccchhh!"

With Martin Lawrence and Tim Robbins? That's a good movie.
It always blows my mind these pop culture icons like Harry and Kramer have a career each with dozens of movies and i know one role of theirs, each

Austin Pendleton has a huge resume on IMDB. He was in The Muppet Movie. I think I recognized him from his roles on the great TV shows Homicide and Oz.
He was also great in Short Circuit!
My personal favorite of his is _Guarding Tess_

My introduction to the great Mr. Pendleton was as Alex Mason Sr. in _Mr. Nanny._
