this is a pretty minor thing but how we treat teenagers. they are too young to know what they're talking about too old to not be in the loop. they get told to go outside more, everywhere they go to hang around people asume they're up to somthing. people get to one day decide that NOW they're all grown up enough to take responsibility for everything and are expected to cope with that. obviously not all teens expirience this but enough do and it's just annoying to me.

This relates so much to a post I read some time ago which was something along the lines of “How do you expect new students to live independently when a few months ago they had to ask to use the restroom?”

OMG, the assuming teens are up to something when they’re just vibing in front of a store or something! As long as they’re not blocking the door or traffic and they don’t leave a huge mess, they should be allowed to be there. This is especially true considering that not all teens have the money to spend in the store/coffee shop/bowling alley/whatever, and their homes might not be hangout-friendly. Kids with bad home lives take as much time outside the house as possible. They just need a space to *be* without anyone picking at them.

Literally! I used to stay in and my mum would get at me to go out with my friends, I'd go out and shed guilt me into staying in! And because most things to do outside made for teenagers cost money, that teenagers dont often have, they end up just, hanging around and getting moved on by security or the owners of whatever is near them, where are they meant to go?

Another issue tied into this is how teenagers are shunned for their clothing style. So many teens are insecure, so they naturally wear baggy clothing and the like but then they get accused of being up to no good. You see a trouble maker in baggy clothing to steal something from a shop, when in actuality they're just trying to hang out whilst trying to not feel so insecure (especially in the current climate of social media)

    • @creepydoll2872

I think about this often, I feel bad for teenagers growing up right now. They have no where they can go safely without spending money. When I was around 12-15 we hung out at the mall a lot and we able to see friends in a sort of safe environment without supervision and adult clubs had middle school and high school dance nights , but malls are basically dead now and idk if nights like that exist anymore.
A lot of places won’t hire people under 18 so less spending money for them, public transportation absolutely sucks in most places in the US so its hard to get around. Coronavirus made it worse. Yet, people get on their case for not being able to socialize or spending too much time socializing on social media. Even I near 30 get most of my social interaction online in the past year. Its like what exactly do you want them to do?

This reminds me of NHS. All my friends were in it but I've always been behind in math, its never made sense to me so it dragged my GPA down and when everyone started getting invitation letters to NHS or even NJHS It really made me feel stupid, and like I didn't try hard enough even though I took honors and AP classes, and genuinely tried hard.
Math really was awful to me emotionally, and senior year my counselor said I should drop Trig pre calc and take an easier math and I felt dumb and like a quitter but it was making my life a living hell, but dropping it was really the best decision I ever made.

    • @rainmer471
      @rainmer471 3 года назад +11

Oh yeah this is a huge problem. Especially during the time we had to stay home from school because of covid, I struggled a lot with feeling super guilty for taking literally any breaks. I didn't get much done in class because of how stressed out I was (a lot of which was because of exacerbated mental illness) and because of that I more or less never ate breakfast or lunch on weekdays because taking those twenty minutes off from school would send me into a panic attack.
In-person, both pre- and post- stay at home, is just so incredibly stressful, especially for someone like me who is in a gifted and talented program and two years advanced math without issue in terms of understanding but struggles a lot with the work load (having a long-term research project for 3/4 of my core classes at the same time equals a lot of work after school, a lot of all-nighters, and no sick days because if you take a single day off you come back and suddenly you understand nothing). Plus the number of panic attacks I've had in the stairwell between classes is kind of ridiculous.
Also yeah, teachers and parents being so rude about dream jobs is annoying. Like, they're dream jobs. Most of the time the person who has them knows that they're unrealistic, but even so, it's good to have something to aim for! For instance, my dream job has always been to be an author. I love writing and it would be great to be able to do that as a career. Despite that, I am well aware that most authors don't make nearly enough to be able to support themselves full time and that even if I'm able to publish a book or two someday, I'll most likely have to have a day job as well. Having dreams doesn't make you dumb or pathetic or unrealistic, it just means you have something to shoot for!
Sorry for this lowkey essay and also messy sentence structure.

@@lania2246 What does NHS mean? I am German and don't really know much about the American school system. In my school it was generally expected to be be bad at math. In Germany you can leave school after 10 years instead of 12 if you want to work in a job that doesn't require you going to university or you can do the extra 2 years and after that go to university. Some people nearly couldn't graduate because they didn't pass our math class. I find it really interesting that there are different difficulties of classes that you can take because in my state in Germany when you do 11th and 12th grade you chose two courses that are advanced and all the other courses are on a basic level. I can just imagine how it must be if you could do advanced courses for every subject and were kinda expected to do so.

to be fair children generally prefer to be hanging off of mom and if given a choice they'll choose mom almost every time this is especially true with daughters even when they're in a phase where they want to hang out with Dad, anything that happens they automatically gravitate to Mom if she's present. I think between toddler and puberty boys tend to gravitate more towards dad for a while after puberty it's kind of a toss-up that depends on the relationship. obviously there's exceptions to this, I tried to be one of those dads that it was all about equal time. I changed diapers did laundry stayed home with them when they were sick, but when I came to trying to take some of the stress away from their mother it was an uphill battle. if they woke up in the middle of the night from a nightmare they didn't come to me they went to their mother even when they were infants I'd be like honey you keep sleeping I'll take care of it and they wouldn't accept me at all, apparently I was chopped liver.

Yep, the guy who came up with it was telling those who were buying the stock for their shops that irrespective of what _you_ would like to sell, what is "right" for the shop is what the customer wants to buy. So you supply what they want or go under. From the stories I've heard, mainly via reddit readings, about the lengths shops will go to in the USA for customer service (above and beyond is an understatement - the customers are taking the piss and the shops let them do it!), I keep wanting to scream at the managers and tell them why they are so wrong! TBH, I think that at least in part (and it's a big part), this 'give the customer what they want' attitude has encouraged the rise of "The Karen". Fortunately, most shops here in the UK aren't quite so ready to cut their own throats to please those who don't deserve it, but as in all things, when the US sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold. It's creeping over here and as a customer, I don't like it!

actually it should be considered part of the "ideology" of sales. it's not really supposed to be taken literally, and you'd be hard-pressed to find any business that actually does, because if they did they wouldn't make any money and they would just go out of business. other concepts that are included in that "ideology" are: "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar", "upsell upsell upsell", "talk to the husband but sell to the wife", "Greet every customer as they come through the door", "ABC = always be selling|always be cleaning|always be smiling" "recover as you go" ... and many more. and I know all this without ever having worked in sales or at a retail job, although I do work a job that's on the periphery of retail... essentially it's just a series of phrases from backroom sales posters designed to help keep you from aggroing a herd of Karen's and instead get them to spend money on things. or at least get them to spend money on things whether you aggro them or not

In light of a recent pandemic, this has only painted a darker picture.

Yeah, that's horrible. I was a sick kid. I had a heart condition that was discovered during winter holidays in first grade. The grade you learn to read and write in essentially. Good thing I knew how to read already. I literally didn't attend school at all the entire second semester. The teacher created an exam for me and I made 1 mistake in it. So I went to grade 2 with the rest of the class. I literally missed an entire semester of school and went on to be the best student every year of my studies until Uni. I'm pretty sure the kids will be ok missing a day here and there. Like I continued to do for the rest of my education. I would have lost my mind if my country had such a thing as attendance awards.

On the school attendance thing, I remember having exactly the same conversation with my teachers. I have a periodic paralysis disability, namely Andersen Tawil Syndrome, it it meant that - on occasions - my mobility would be impaired, or non-existent, and I would be unable to attend school. One particular year had more bout of extreme muscle weakness than normal, and my end of year report showed an attendance rating of 79%. Now, my school considered an attendance rating below 80%, as mine was, to be a cause for concern, and this meant I had to have a meeting with one of the teachers. By meeting, they - effectively - meant a detention.
I explained, rather eloquently for the 15 year old I was at the time, that to punish me for low attendance, to punish me for something beyond my control, to punish me when I had a freaking disability, was wrong, and technically discriminatory. The teacher conceded the point, and we sat in silence for the rest of the 1/2 hour 'meeting'. I had hoped that, even if the teacher wasn't going to let me go, they'd understanding enough to relay my concerns to a higher authority. No such luck. The next year I was more fortunate, I scraped an 81% attendance rating, so no detention, but my end of year report still reflected my lower attendance.
Now, let me make it absolutely clear that on each occasion of absence, one of my parents - as the school couldn't trust a student to know if they were unwell - had called in, and made it known that I was incapacitated, Even on one occasion when I had to go to hospital, when a sickness during a weak period meant that I was unable to medicate my weakness - I was unable to ingest anything orally - and I had to be placed on a drip to be able to recover, my mother rang in from my hospital-bed-side. Despite all this, despite the fact that these were all authorised absences, and so not illegal, the school recorded each occasion as a black mark on my report.
Also, point of fact, this all happened in a UK school, which - I gather - meant to be more understanding of that sort of thing than schools in other countries. So yeah, the school system's obsession with attendance, and absence, is rather problematic.

Yep. Homework is also such a wildly different experience depending on the family situation. The rich kid who can afford a tutor, the poor kid who's parents aren't around to help them because they're working, the kid who has younger siblings to look after before they do their work, the kid who's parents didn't get much of an education themselves, or the one who's parents actively get in the way of their work through neglect or abuse. We can't expect every kid to be able to do any work at home at all, or to be able to devote the same time and effort to it, when we know that a significant number of kids don't even get reliable _meals_ at home, let alone quiet, productive homework time.

      @tacosmexicanstyle7846 3 года назад +10

@@ChickenOfAwesome i don’t feel like the solution is to abolish homework though. The issues that make doing work at home difficult need to be addressed; give kids access to healthy meals through schools, lift families out of poverty etc. The value that kids get out of contact hours at school could also be increased. There are some subjects that kids will just never learn without revising at home; 30 hours of school a week (much of it not spent learning) just isn’t enough, and time with teachers should be used for learning the new and clarifying the old. Otherwise kids waste a lot of time in class doing the manual repetitive work that would be assigned for homework.

Ultimately it should be up to the individual parent unless they cross the line into harming their child by it.

It's all just filming the family all day every day. If filming yourself like that is a job, then filming your kids means it's their job. Your pre-schooler shouldn't have a job.

@@Lee.Smells Bear in mind that, when it comes to your exams next year (as, indeed, in every year) the results are normalised across the whole cohort. What that means is that the examiners know that papers will vary in difficulty from year to year but expect that each cohort (group of students taking the exam) will have roughly the same spread of ability. Therefore, to be fair, the grade boundaries are adjusted to give the same grade distribution.
In the case of cohorts affected by the impact of school closures and lockdowns, the raw marks may be lower but the grade boundaries will also move downwards, thus not disadvantaging the group as a whole. It is arguable that there may be some long term disadvantage as students will have a less secure foundation going on to colleges or universities but as this affects the whole group the establishments should be able to adjust to offer additional support where required.

    With the attendance certificates thing:
I feel like getting a reward for attendance and punctuality is fine so long as children who don't get it aren't made to feel bad about their attendance. What I think should be done to make this fairer is not count sick days towards children's attendance. This is what happened at my college when students had to self isolate because of coronavirus-you are preventing others from getting sick and you can't work properly when you are sick. Also I think it is wrong for students who have a medical condition for their attendance to be affected because they HAVE to go to the doctors or are too sick to come in.

Oh yeah? Tell that to the 1 A* 4 As, 9 Bs and 2 Cs I got in my GCSEs in Year 11. I also forgot to mention, when I was sick and had a few days off, maybe like a week maximum, we got a letter on the third day saying I had to send proof that I was ill. I really hated the attendence awards. I have a chronic illness. I had about 30% attendence (can’t remember exactly but it was around 30) for years 9-11. It was even lower for year 7 and 8 where I would be off school for months at a time. I still managed to get 8 GCSEs with some A*s and As so it wasn’t like I wasn’t learning. Just I was having to do a lot of it from home or try to catch up on things I missed when I was back in school. I knew it was out of my control that I was sick and no one purposely made me feel bad about it. But the attendance awards very much felt like other kids were getting praise for being healthy and like I could never be quite as good as them because I would never be able to do that. A decade later, I still feel like I’m not good enough because of my chronic illness. That insecurity is mostly because of bullying that went on because I was the disabled kid and because of my inability to work a full time job in a society built around productivity. So maybe I was just projecting my own insecurities onto the awards but I hated them so much. I would purposely zone out and daydream through them if I was actually in school on award day so I didn’t have to hear about them.
Looking back, I don’t really see the point of the awards. Anyone who cares enough about school to care if they get an attendence award is going to be in school whenever they can be anyway. I know they have to monitor attendence to make sure kids aren’t skiving but why the awards?

I was made to feel so bad for not being physically capable of going to school often and literally told to my face told I would fail my GCSEs because of it despite having passed my mocks. Schools stress the importance of regular attendance because there is a clear correlation between attendance and academic progress. Put simply, the more time you miss, on average, the lower marks you will achieve--which should not come as a surprise to anyone. As a former teacher, I would also observe that students missing lessons tends to affect the whole group as time spent explaining missed work is time that can't be spent supporting other students.
However... I completely agree that that who are absent due to illness should not be shamed into attending when unfit nor unfairly treated on their return. Personally, I find the whole 'attendance culture' iniquitous whether in school or in the workplace. People work better when fit and are more likely to return to full fitness if given adequate time to recover.

@@MrPaulMorris I know attendance and marks generally correlate but for those of us not able we should just be given the best support possible (also about it taking time out of class to catch me up my teachers never once did that I missed what I missed) with maybe resources on missed topics sent home to read if you can or for chronically ill students like me the whole curriculum sent home at the start of the year for us to go through when we can. It wasn't the only way my school treated me badly (and sometimes illegally under the 2010 equalities act) but it was one of the most stressful for me and my family and I wasn't the only one they did it to. There was a girl in the year above me who they harassed into no longer bringing her wheelchair to school no matter that it made her schooling much more difficult and painful. A friend of mine who had haemophilia tripped and fell over a broken table and it took a year in a wheelchair and 6 months on crutches to recover, his mum wanted to sue but he convinced her not to. They spent the next 2 years until he left holding a grudge against him and taking any excuse to treat him badly. I had a few good teachers but the vast majority of that schools staff were terrible.

@@violetskies14 In regard to sending work and notes to students who are absent due to illness, in the past I have sometimes had very negative feedback both from students and parents when this has been done. They have told me that it seemed they were being pressed to study when illness made that difficult or impossible. I have read comments here on RUclips expressing the same concerns.
From a teacher's standpoint, it is not always easy to supply notes, even where they would be welcomed, as they often simply don't exist in a suitable form. While I don't claim to speak for all teachers, in most cases I worked from the briefest of outlines (the most optimistic might call them 'lesson plans') supported by a range of resources including text books, online resources (mainly local, ie on the school server rather than the internet), handwritten notes on the whiteboards, traditional 'talk and chalk', practical demonstrations and, most importantly in my own teaching style, directed questioning. Very little of this translates well into lesson hand-outs.
I think that my original comment indicated that appropriate support should be offered to students returning from absence and I apologise if perhaps that wasn't clear enough.

There's a reason Greta Thunberg eats a plant based diet.
"According to the most comprehensive analysis of farming’s impact on the planet, plant-based food is most effective at combatting climate change. Oxford University researcher Joseph Poore, who led the study, said adopting a vegan diet is “the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth.”
“A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use. It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car,” he explained, which would only reduce greenhouse gas“Avoiding consumption of animal products delivers far better environmental benefits than trying to purchase sustainable meat and dairy,” he added.”. -Joseph Poore, Environmental Science Researcher, University of Oxford.

To reduce plastic use, I use my own shopping bags, buy from the bulk section, reuse produce bags, and reuse bags like bread bags for food storage to avoid buying more bags. I also recycle, but I hate the fact that most plastic doesn't get recycled after I put it in the recycle bin. I also carry a refillable water flask instead of using single use plastic bottles.

(This is all English stuff, I don’t know about other places) Another thing that I’ve come across is that people think that going to school is mandatory or that you have to be 16 to go to college.
I went to primary school for three years, until I was seven, then I went to a Steiner school (kinda like a hippie school) until I was 9. I was then homeschooled for five years by my mother who trained as a primary school teacher.
I then went to college at the age of 14.
It is actually illegal to be a FULL TIME student at college in England until the age of 16. I was only allowed to do the main course and a single GCSE. Next year I will be doing a two year course which is the equivalent of three A-levels at the age of 15-17, alongside another GCSE.

@@Rain-np7tk They're already doing that in some cases for things like jeans, on top of labeling it as "women's" or "men's". Can you explain why you think gendered clothing is annoying to you? I don't really see the issue because you're allowed to shop in the women's and the men's section.
      The things about fashion/fashion culture that I find annoying;
-fast fashion being unsustainable and exploiting workers
-lack of pockets in women's wear
-the fact that in many men's departments size 1~10 (not real sizes, just an example) are all in the same line so size 1 is the exact same design as size 10, but in the large majority of women's departments this size range is divided between the regular size line and the plus size line and in the large majority of the time you won't be able to get the same design in the plus sized line as in the regular size line.
Common complaints from plus sized women are that many plus sized lines offer frumpy and shapeless designs.
      -vanity sizing
-many western cultures have this idea that if you don't fit into off the rack clothing perfectly it means there's something wrong with your body instead of the garment. Common "solutions" for fitting issues that are recommended are weight loss, exercise, plastic surgery, padding.
Nobody I know, whether they are slim or not, consistently fits into off the rack clothing perfectly.
In the past it was the norm to buy either custom fit garments or to get standardized (which was never truly standardized) clothing altered to fit better, people did not consider themselves flawed for not fitting into off the rack stuff perfectly, people weren't chasing a specific number on the label either. Alterations were expected and normal.

I had to do my weight and blood pressure for a tablet review and my BMI came back 26.5 ... technically overweight... but what that doesn’t account for is that I eat well, i strength train 5 times a week, walk EVERYWHERE and have a disability that makes my body composition different to everyone else.
I know I’m going to go in to that appointment and get pressured to lose weight. I get that it’s important for those that have no concept of healthy eating or with other conditions, but I have been repeatedly ignored when I’ve explained why I don’t weigh myself and why it appears that I am overweight. Simply put: I can’t physically exercise any more than I already do, and I can’t eat any less without feeling faint & weak.
