I absolutely loved the Americas and Teutonic Campaigns. Both sparked a historic interest about these times and locations in me which exists until this day. The Crusades were amazing as well. My least favourite was the Britannia campaign as I felt it a little bit boring compaired to the others. The Teutonic and Americas campaign simply felt so innovative and put a spotlight on places, times and conflicts which were rarely featured before in any strategy game and haven‘t been since. MTW2 Kingdoms is peak Total War, absolutely mandatory for anyone.
Yes, Britannia soundtrack was unmatched for me. It's crazy to think CA was even capable of implementing such a soundtrack back then, hearing all of the uninspiring blandness of today's titles.
I've loved Ailein Duinn ever since I first heard it in Rob Roy. The music in Britannia was hauntingly beautiful, but I wouldn't really call it a soundtrack exactly, at least when you were on the campaign map. It was more like eight second samples of music that made you think: "sounds like a great soundtrack, I wish they'd stop teasing and actually play it".
@@nehukybis Hahaha you know, you’re right, but this is how music worked in both Rome and Medieval 2. I still think we can call it a soundtrack, but they were definitely different. The importance was that the music was great and memorable, and hearing the tunes just made me happy.

The americas campaign as Spain in a nutshell: send diplomats to get map information, recruit thousands of native mercanaries to use as meatshields and crush the natives using cavalry, ranged and canons. Rinse and repeat. although u forgot to mention the events where France and England come to contest your colonial claim. Fun events which forces you to scramble together armies at unexpected locations
@@AndysTake I do love the Teutonic campaign for what it brings to the table, I would have loved one extra campaign, being the reconcquista, to round out the kingdoms expansion. Bringing the Kingdom of Catalonia that didn't make it into the base campaign into it, along with fixing the family trees of Castille Leon and Portugal would have made the expansion so much more lively.
@@AndysTake The Reconquista is always a fun thing, but this is the only game I can think of that has a focus on Crusades against European pagans so I am happy they included it. That campaign is always a struggle to pick a side for me, as the Teutonic Order is the first historical group I ever read a detailed military history of, but I don't want to force convert some of the last pagans in Europe either. There's always something appealing about the last stand against tyranny in the name of freedom.
As a descendant of Spaniards, I would have loved a Reconquista campaign.... It's kind of the reason why when I play crusader kings I always choose one of the Spanish kingdoms
Any video about Med 2 deserves a like nowadays. I absolutely love Kindgoms, and Coca cola. No joke. My favorite Brittania faction is Ireland. Principality of Antioch for the Crusades, and Lithuania in the Teutonic campaign. Lithuania reminds me of Rome 1 factions with several gods and temples to choose from. In the Americas Spain and the Apaches are my go to. If and when Med 2 remastered comes out, do make a follow up. Thanks for touching on my favorite game.
I liked the rebel faction and how there was rebel territories to start each campaign. Always wondered which faction would branch out first and take what they could
The scale of the maps in Kingdoms made so much more sense. The original game didn't actually feel very medieval- more like the Napoleonic wars with medieval technology. After a few turns you had these massive factions that covered half of Europe. At the same time, kingdoms had a subtle change that made the game way less frustrating- army movement per turn was increased to fit the smaller scale better, and it had the side effect of speeding up the game- no more waiting five turns as your armies and even your diplomats crawled from one side of one of your provinces to the other. One issue I had with the Teutonic campaign is that it was the one map that had completely arbitrary boundaries. The map borders just stopped in the middle of wide open plains, cutting off most of Russia and the HRE. It really worked best if you were playing Denmark, which was confined by seas, or Poland or the Teutonic knights, who at least were in the center of the map. I am sad Spain or Italy didn't get their own campaigns. I would trade all the games CA has put out in the last ten years for a good Italian kingdoms expansion.
there is a medieval 2 mod called "kingdoms grand campaign" which makes the global map bigger, and adds pretty much all the kingdoms from the Expansions and their territories, allowing you the closest thing to a full experience.
the relatively small map of the grand campaign made it more nonsensical for a roleplayer like me , like why in the world would i want to conquer the entirety of the holy roman empire and for example spain , it makes no sense , while for example in ETW when playing a nation like prussia you could just focus on beating down the german states , austria and poland and then call it quits after you have established a new german empire (which is what i did)

You know what I find really interesting, I've got some friends who really can't understand how anybody can play a game for 500 hours +. Like to them a game is 15 to 20 hours and they're usually done with it or about 100 hours of call of duty over the course of a year. Games like total war and Europa universalis 4 really can consume an entire era of one's life. Medieval 2 Total war was probably the game that took up the most time for me when I was in college outside of Guld Wars.
I got one of my friends into Total War and history by convincing him to buy the game recently. The multiplayer is so much fun with friends as we use the horribly balanced stuff and try to recreate historical battles. Some of the best moments I’ve had in gaming where close battles and sieges that were down to a handful of men on the verge of breaking fighting over the corpses of the two armies. It’s also so nice to make custom rules about how we engage and move our forces. Overall, I would say Medieval 2 and Kingdoms is one of the best RTS games available right now and if you wait for a sale you can get it for pretty cheap.
I played this so much more than the base game, and I *adored* the base game. Playing pagans in the Teutonic game, or the Welsh in Britannia with longbows and plate spearmen...amazing

Good video as always. I love Kingdoms, but every time I go back I just end up playing the Irish campaign. It's still better than Thrones of Britannia, and I love that the Teutonic Order gets its own campaign as well. CK3 take some tips from the Crusade campaign I think.
Thanks, Tanuvein :) haha what fascinates you about the Irish campaign? I just love the vibe and music of the Britannia campaign, same with the Crusades!
@@AndysTake The music is incredible, I agree. I actually listen to historical music outside of games so it's always a treat to have such a good soundtrack. I loved that in Britannia that while everyone is coming from a relatively similar technology group every faction still feels unique and they look more culturally unique than they do in something like Britannia. I just love the map too - I'm always a fan of a Britannia campaign, usually as the Irish, but I've probably conquered the isles with all of the factions (Scotland, Wales, England, Norse and the Irish) in EU4, CK3 and this expansion. Ireland being the under dog always makes them the most fun imo, and I also have ancestry to Ireland and Scotland. Still never finished Thrones of Britannia.
I've set it on my other channel.... But I really do hope that we get a legitimate Pike and shot total war or Post-Renaissance Total War something like that
Britannia was my favorite. Scots defending from impeding "viking" invasion was awesome. Also that campaign too had heroes and apart from new settlement models it also had stone forts and culture mechanics. Teutonic had cool pagans and hanseatic league as well as great looking teutonic knights. Crusaders also brought some new units to Byzantium and so on... cool expansion.
I love the britannia and crusader campaign, never tried teutonic order but i'll try in near time, for americas... uhh, it's quite fun but not as best as crusaders and britannia, i think teutonic order will be fun as well!
You should check out that Lucium:Total War, a M2:K mod that converts it into a better version of Empire: Total War. Really one of the best mods out there and really adds a lot through scripted events much like when I formed Romania as Wallachia-Moldova or playing through the Spanish Succession Crisis or as the Ottoman Empire as your satellite states rebel. It even has a separate campaign for South America covering the period of revolution in the 1800s! Check it out!

I know what you mean about having Norway as a viable playable faction. When they added Australia as a sort of viable nation in HOI4 with a overpriced DLC I was very happy 😊 It just makes the game feel a bit more special
Haha exactly! :D makes it so much more fun. Still waiting for that Norwegian unique focus tree in HOI4 though 😭 but we’re likely getting something in EU4 next time! So that’s exiting hahaha
sad reacts only for the 4th crusade :'''( but also a side note, warhammer total war 2 & 3 has great graphics etc but the battles just are never as satisfying as they were in medieval 2
@@BoyNextDoorGachi I mean, last time I checked, I didn’t see the Aztecs sailing to Spain, then proceeding to enslave, loot, rape, and spread diseases. One side was clearly worse, and that’s the invading Spanish.
Why don't CA understand the obvious? That Medieval 2 is the best and most importantly the most beloved game by fans. Do the same, but with improvements and success is guaranteed. Music, surroundings, description of buildings and units with pictures. Where did all this go?

Aztecs: Tries giving the Spaniards blood covered food and kills a peasant in front of them as a sacrifice. Spaniards: Horrified and some sobbing over the death of the peasant. Moctezuma stuck with fear when learning of their reaction: "Surely they couldn't be feeling compassion for the wretch? That would be absurd. Hurry! We must prepare heart filled totems for their arrival, its worse than I thought!" Unironically the dynamic.
It was a little joke, no need to be so triggered. Everybody knows the Aztecs were brutal. Besides, the Spanish were the invaders and the conquerors, and treated the natives horribly, so I don’t know what you’re trying to get at.
@@AndysTake Except the natives weren't just enslaved and treated horribly as you describe. They were transitioned into feudalism the same system used in Europe. The Laws of Burgos clearly asserted that they be treated as normal subjects and that their rulers have responsibilities to them. It was corruption which led to mistreatment, people not following the laws that were in place and exploiting their position. Further there is nothing wrong with invading and conquering a civilization that sacrifices innocent people at a rate of ~250,000 per year.
@@darken2417 a lot of people seem to forget that the Americas were full of tribes warring and enslaving eachother before anyone else turned up. The perception of human history is being completely warped by ideologs in fields such as post-colonial theory. Great video, Kingdoms surely deserves a spotlight. I’m looking forward to playing it someday but for now I’m all about that Medieval 1 😎. Keep up the good work man!
And Shogun 1 😁
@@IceniTotalWar oh sure, there’s been a little bit of Shogun as well 😁
@@khanofsteppe1667 You're a real trooper for still playing the Original TW 👍.
I must be Subbed to about 350 TW content channels and i can't remember anyone else doing campaign play in it.
@@IceniTotalWar I appreciate it Iceni! Yeah I know Legend and Brought to Bear have some Shogun 1 stuff on their channels but there’s really not much else besides that. Heck, I think that’s why I started this channel. I discovered TW by watching RUclips videos but there wasn’t very little Shogun 1 and Medieval 1 content so I decided to do it myself!
@@khanofsteppe1667 Yeah i think YT started to take off right around the time of Rome 1.
Also Rome 1 was used in a popular UK tv show so it got a lot of coverage.
Shogun 1 Med 1 were kinda ahead of their time but missed out on their 5 minutes of media fame.
Both good games though. And Shogun 1 is where it all started for TW.
i liked the kingdoms expac because the map was obviously much more detailed and ˝full˝ while in the grand campaign alot of space was left empty (im looking at you eastern europe)
love your channel, glad someone is so enthusiastic about (historical) total war
Thank you for saying that, Floppja! :D it’s my pleasure, I’m so craving a new historical Total War, but all I can do is cover what’s available right now haha
I'm finishing up my Antioch campaign right now, need to hold Constantinople for 9 more turns so i'm hunting down the Venetians and Mongols in the meantime.
Welsh, Irish and Mayan campaigns were some of my all time favourite total war campaigns! This video made me wanna play them again
Love this video and seeing your face man! You're right, Kingdoms was a game changer. Very cool that you would play the Crusades campaign while watching Kingdom of Heaven (director's cut I hope!). I did the same stuff as a kid! Watching Gladiator, Braveheart or LOTR then trying to recreate the battle scenes in Total War 😂
Thank you so much! :D oh yes, Director’s Cut, naturally ;) ah, all classics, and definitely something I think a lot of us have done at one or several points 😄
Now I ask my GF to sing me all Britannia campaign OST
6:49 ngl sounds like a pretty good time huh
It really does.
I just recently rediscovered my love of Medieval 2 due to the amazing mobile release! 10/10 content!
Thank you so much, Dan! :D
I love your takes, Andy! Keep em coming! And much love to all old school TW fans!
Great video, Andy! Love the new camera 😀
Thank you so much, Georgi! :D
A dream Total War of mine would be one that starts off in Attila and ends in Napoleon while having a Mortal Empires style map and gameplay option.
I could already imagine stuff like the Aztecs somehow getting boats all the way to Europe at turn 30.
Would love a so-called TW “Eras” as well, that’d be the dream. And a Sunset Invasion? Perhaps haha
@@AndysTake lol yeah i did download that mod
Loved the Tutonic campaign... mainly to get my revenge on those damn mongols.
For the algorithm
He reminds me of Serpentza with the suit and glasses xD
Andy reviews beverages! Love your content, Andy! Cheers from Hakodate! I have a random beverage suggestion for you to try out. Here me out...fill a cup halfway with frozen blueberries and then top it off with orange juice. Enjoy alternating between sips of blueberry enhanced OJ and spoonfuls of now mostly thawed out blueberries.
Anyway, sorry for the random unsolicited reccomendation but it is delicious!
Oh wow, Hakodate, now that’s far away! Thank you so much for watching :D and hmmm that sounds delicious! Might try it out sometime - is this a Japanese beverage, mayhaps?
It looks like my comment was removed a 3rd time.
It was something along the lines of no the blueberry OJ is just a random thing I tossed together when I was hungry. Two things I love at once!
Also I think you would like Goryokaku Fort in Hakodate. It will give you Empire vibes if you pull up some images! It was the site of one of the last battles of the Boshin War and the start of the Meiji Restoration.
Do you have an email for fans to send you things? I want to send some pics of the fort if I can. Anyway, cheers from 北海道 (Hokkaido, the northern main island of Japan)!🇯🇵

Good video; I appreciate the dedication to the disgusting energy drink bit
Thanks, Cato! Not so grumpy after all! ;)
how do I launch the dlc for the non-steam version? (Disk)
Swiss chocolate, moving up the ranks!
I really enjoyed this video and can’t wait for more! Man they have to make medieval 3 it has so much potential imagine the dlcs they could do
Thank you so much, Peanut Wars! :D would love a Medieval 3 as well!
great vid, enjoy the new style
Thank you! :D
One thing that will always never not be funny for me, is that the inquisitors literally throw a bible at your face when they burn your priest.
The grand campaign and crusade campaign are awesome, imagine that you fight Mongolian and Timurid.
I never played hotseat nor did I know it existed until you mentioned it.
Can you review planet war?
I love the britannia and crusader campaign, never tried teutonic order but i'll try in near time, for americas... uhh, it's quite fun but not as best as crusaders and britannia, i think teutonic order will be fun as well!
Great video Andy!
Thank you so much! :D
@@AndysTake Yeah really liked the format and the amount of fun is "lagom" so to speak ;)
@@thisistotalwar oh a Swede, good to know ;)
You should check out that Lucium:Total War, a M2:K mod that converts it into a better version of Empire: Total War.
Christmas - Yea ok makes sense
Hanukkah - Well... they're vaguely the same timeframe
Kwanzaa - Also in the same timeframe so sure? Not sure if it's really religious but eh whatever
Ramadan - 😳
I know what you mean about having Norway as a viable playable faction. When they added Australia as a sort of viable nation in HOI4 with a overpriced DLC I was very happy 😊 It just makes the game feel a bit more special
Haha exactly! :D makes it so much more fun. Still waiting for that Norwegian unique focus tree in HOI4 though 😭 but we’re likely getting something in EU4 next time! So that’s exiting hahaha
@@AndysTake that's awesome!
Great video mate
Thank you so much :)
I played while watching kingdom of heaven too! Glad to know I'm not alone. Also the last samurai and shogun 2 lol
PLEASE! More HISTORICAL Total War games!!! ⚔🛡🏹
I always go for the Aztecs I may be biased bcs of my Aztec ancestors maybe just a little bit
Makes sense! Glad you’re enjoying them! :D
You have a Spanish name
@@sh-hg4eg you are not the brightest
Those are the days i want to be a crusader!
Because it had flamethrowers idc about historical accuracy, that shit Was dope af.
And also improved/fixed some troops/factions mostly the ones that was taken from the base game to crusades
Btw you should try the "Rise of The Eagles" mod for Medieval 2 total war
sad reacts only for the 4th crusade :'''(
but also a side note, warhammer total war 2 & 3 has great graphics etc but the battles just are never as satisfying as they were in medieval 2
Amazing video, thank you!
Thank you so much for saying that! :)
Is hotseat still a thing for no mod kingdoms?
oh yes, no mod Kingdoms had the original hotseat campaigns. No mod as in vanilla, if that's what you're referring to!
Is that an Energy Drink with Chocolate Flavor ?!
Oh yes. Have you been looking forward to that?
@@AndysTake Very intrigued atleast
@@countdooku1363 I think the amount of chocolate in it has doubled since I last drank it.

dude you made me redownload the game goddamnit x)
Ah man, enjoy ;)
holy shit playing as lithuania in the teutonic campaign is impossible
the britannia soundtrack
Heads up: Diet soda is terrible for you
Kingdoms is great and all medieval 2 is my favorite game
But can we talk about barbarian invasion its very cool
Do you know there is no a way to play hotseat battles in multiplayer?

@@AndysTake He may be referring to your spanish bad aztecs good comment at 13:16
@@BoyNextDoorGachi yeah I think we all know the Aztecs were a crazy bunch too lol
Hernan Cortez was not a man of high morals either.
Kingdoms is far and beyond my favorite TW game/expansion. Wish they'd make another one, didn't take long to tire of the warhammer games, didn't even bother buying the 3rd one.
MTW2 is simple my favorite of all the total wars : )

Switch horrible and brave there
Aztecs: Tries giving the Spaniards blood covered food and kills a peasant in front of them as a sacrifice.
Spaniards: Horrified and some sobbing over the death of the peasant.
Moctezuma stuck with fear when learning of their reaction:
"Surely they couldn't be feeling compassion for the wretch? That would be absurd.
Hurry! We must prepare heart filled totems for their arrival, its worse than I thought!"
Unironically the dynamic.
It was a little joke, no need to be so triggered. Everybody knows the Aztecs were brutal. Besides, the Spanish were the invaders and the conquerors, and treated the natives horribly, so I don’t know what you’re trying to get at.
@@AndysTake
Except the natives weren't just enslaved and treated horribly as you describe.
@@AndysTake he’s a right wing chud, of course what you said bothers him. He’s a little snowflake 🤣
@@darken2417 a lot of people seem to forget that the Americas were full of tribes warring and enslaving eachother before anyone else turned up. We now also know, with modern genetics, that the North American Amerinidians themselves actually come from the Siberian peninsula and wiped out previous indigenous groups on their arrival to the Americas.
The perception of human history is being completely warped by ideologs in fields such as post-colonial theory. There's this ridiculous idea that the world was static and at peace until Europeans turned up and this isn't to mention the various invasions, piracy and slave raids that Europe endured from other civilisations before Europe managed to achieve dominance.
Oh man, i still play SS in 2022 ...
