IGN Reviews - DuckTales: Remastered Review

- Sure, DuckTales isn't as good as you probably remember it being, but WayForward has produced a remake of the game that fans of the original NES title will want to check out.
This review is off. The game should get at least an 8.5 or 9. It's call 'remastered' not 're-envisioned' for a reason. The game is true to the original and plays amazing well some 20+ years later.
Exactly its not a remake!
People need to be able to tell the difference.
They got the 93-year-old original voice actor for Scrooge along with every other surviving cast member (one of whom is 96 years old) to come back and actually do all of these voices that we haven't heard in a quarter of a century, and you are going to complain about it? It's not just about remaking the game. It's also about revisiting the show. I seriously don't understand why people are complaining.
yeah that's IGN for ya
WHAT!? A game based completly off a NES game has difficulty spikes!? Surely you jest!
I’m an NES kid, trust me, they did a wonderful job with this game.
I have to agree with many comments that this review is not only overly harsh, but also blatantly wrong at times. This is how remakes should be done and developers should take note. Very fun game that stays true to the original while being its own thing.
How is the story annoying? You just press start then A and it's gone with no loading time.
AHMED ALBOHAMAD you to press start every time tho thats annoying
you see , this is why nobody is the industry takes ign seriously.
He knows its based off an NES game right? Hence the difficulty spikes. He's not that stupid right?...RIGHT?!
Dude, we live in an era where everybody whines about everything being hard.
It's ign, what do you expect
ign is exaggerating how hard it is to skip cut scenes, the only buttons you have to press are you just have to pause it and click the first button on the list
Personally I thought Wayforward did a FANTASTIC job on Ducktales Remastered.
Wow.. it totally brings back my childhood memories. Every Saturday morning, Ducktales was the reason I wanted to wake up. mm.. Good old days..

It's not perfect - so what? I'm happy they've made this at all, it's an amazing effort.
I enjoyed Ducktales Remastered so much as much as i loved the original Ducktales games on NES :) . This game was so much fun to play and i loved the voiceacting , levels, music and the bossbattles and the graphics and the art is so beautifuly made :)
Carl Barks drew Scrooge with a red outfit.
Jacob Moeller yeah, the original sprite was correct and looked better honestly
It looked better? lol. I love the game, but come on. These hand drawn animations are amazing.
@@sonnybrown4758 Ya the animations are amazing, but the outfit should have been red. As drawn by Carl Barks (Scrooges father), and even by Don Rosa (Scrooges surrogate uncle)
this game should be a 9 for sure , i loved it so much
The annoying story isn't even a genuine complaint. it takes one second to skip a cut scene and it's nice that the game has more depth.
Shua Li At least a 9.
@@Se7enRemain 8.5 - 9.5
DuckTales Remastered is an EXCELLENT game. The graphics are beautiful, the soundtrack is amazing, and being a fan of the original DuckTales (NES) i think Capcom/WayForward deserve praise for a job well done and their efforts on bringing this classic back.
I think this is a great game so far. Only finished Amazon And Trans, But It really isnt An "Annoying Story" I loved evey sec ive played so far (Xbox 360) And cant wait to finish iy.
I prefer this one over the original, much more colorful and with the voices it turns more magical, imo, but eh, opinions.
Damn. The NES game was the first title I ever beat in my entire life, so it holds a special place in my heart.
Have you IGN guys thought about asking WayForward if they could make Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers Remastered, too?
Yes they need to do that! That game was just fun
"This game is old, I don't know how to play it, and I don't like it. 4.5/10." That's Tom McShea in a nutshell for ya.
I'd give this game an 8.5 easily
i wouldn't mind either the cutscense or playing the original. i grew up with the show and i'd play both just to feel that nostalgia again.
As a lifelong Disney fan, I've always liked DuckTales. But even with that in mind, I wasn't even much of a fan of the NES game for it when I tried that out a few years ago. But this REMAKE however? Brilliant. Genuinely magical.
The animation's beautiful, the gameplay's really fun and addictive, the music's FANTASTIC and it felt just as fun as the show does. So yeah, extremely surprised at this remake myself. In a good way. Well done, WayForward / Disney / Capcom!
Yeah I agree. The best part about it is how the original voice cast from the TV show reprised their roles, including Alan Young who's now in his 90's. The bad reviews the game has received really baffles me. It captures the spirit of the TV show perfectly.
The point of the voice acting was to make every level feel like an episode from the TV show. The fact that it succeeds in that along with being faithful to the NES game is truly commendable.
This game is backward compatible on the xbox one and I will be picking it up
In Norway as well. Scrooge was made by the legendary Carl Barks, and his coat was originally red. The blue one was made famous by the Ducktales show, which has quite a few differences from the comics.
you can skip every animation / scene by changing the settings in options ... You guys seem to have never played this game.
Note to Colin:
The punishment of having to redo the final level if Glumgold gets the treasure first was in the original game if you're wondering who's idea it was.
I do agree with the cut-senses, but I like the hard difficulty. I collect retro systems so for me it's great to get a game that's going to provide a challenge.
what is with the poeple they get at IGN they get to review these games? It always seems like they give good games a lower score than they should over there.
This game is a masterpiece
I never had a problem with the story because I'm super fast on skiping the cutscenes also it feels like they are not even there when I skip them because I know in what exact location they are triggered.
The story and graphics itself is pretty good, it has that 2.5D style similar to Paper Mario which is a very charming design for the remake rather than ugly 3D models on a 2D plain.
The story is very good and stay true to the show useing the video game characters and the show's characters.
The reason why cutscenes weren't intuitively designed into the game via the "Enter" or "X" button is because waypoint did not originally create cutscenes for the game until they got a call saying the original cartoon voice cast wanted to contribute to this remaster. Its very possible that months of programming were already layed out for the game and the designers didn't wanna rewrite tons of code and map the skip feature to a button or have the game remember that the player already watched it.
I love this game. I never played the original one, but the remastered version just got me instanlty.
I'm a little surprised that the absolute quality poured into this game slipped by the reviewer. I just burned a CD of the remastered music onto a CD so I could listen to it in my car.
I just meant getting a game over from dying, and I HAVE played the remake. The thing is that that other games from that time like Megaman didn't take nearly as long to get through a level. I know I was kind of restating the things he said in the review, but I was really just trying to get the point across that this isn't a bad review and the things he said are accurate.
2D jump'n'run

"gameplay truly unique"
1:13 the "strange red coat" is what he wears originally in the comics! to me that is the "correct" coat and the blue one is the "strange" one
Its supposed to be out, I'd wait for a couple of hours. Check every 3 hours or so.
I agree that the gameplay is a bit uneven, but.. annoying story? Nah, man. It's just charming to get more story from a TV show that ended many, many years ago. If it wasn't for the story, then we'd probably rarely look at the beautifully animated fan favorite characters and the voice acting would be reduced to a few quips that Scrooge sometimes offers, when he takes damage, attacks a guy or jumps from a ladder.
They should really make a chip and dales NES remake now, that game was fun too
I don't get the issue with the story sequences. They make the classic game more like the classic series it's based on and that's really good. Integrated original voice acting, yay! It adds a lot in my opinion
its better than what capcom has put out over the years like the billions of street fighters and millions of RE's.Lets hope and pray that if this thing sells big we'll see DarkWing Duck Remastered.
2:04 I can see that problem, but for me, skipping cutscenes doesn't take that long. It just takes like, one second.
Never played the original so here is my perceptive on it. Its good, like really good.
The main problem is that the cut scenes do get annoying, the game didn't read my controls once in a while and the game is short but overall it is a good game. I would give it a 8 personally but a 7 is right. I dont get what he says about difficulty however. The last stage was the only hard one for me and that's because it was a long last stage
People keep saying the game is hard but i beat the original at eight years old with no issues. Ninja gaiden the original, now that was hard, pansy modern day gamers dont know what hard is! Im getting this remake tho, i never played it but it looks great!
hjames78
Oh god ninja gaiden. I played it for nes once and i kept dying around 3rd or 5th stage and i didnt know how to use ninpo but yea people dont really know what challenge is. This is pretty average with the exception of the last stage. Hope you enjoy it man, its worth it
*perspective
Stay black
The red coat was something from the comics. I always found his blue coat strange in the cartoon.
True, in the comics he always wore a red coat . Only in Duck Tales Scrooge wears a blue coat.
Getting rid of the 8bit wasn't a great move, they could have at least have made a classic mode or something like that to give the people who loved the original feel and look of the NES version
I'm really enjoying this game and hope enough people buy it so they do a Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers Remastered, as I thought that game with its two player co-op was far more enjoyable, but that's just me.
Any DuckTales or Fan of the comics knows that the "red strange coat" is not that strange AT ALL. Scrooge or in German Dagobert ;) had a red coat in the very early comics sometimes. Source: Whole shelf wall full of Donald Duck Pocket Books.
And once again, I'm reminded of the fact that you can't spell "ignorant" without "IGN." Screw you, IGN! I got to play the demo of this at this year's Disney Expo and I LOVED it! 8D I can't believe they got all the voice actors from the show to reprise their roles on this game! Alan Young, the voice of Scrooge, still sounds good at the age of 94! Much respect!
this game is great imo, I like the voice acting from the original cast as I was a fan of the show when I was a kid.
Did you even listen to him? He said it was annoying that you can't skip a cut scene after playing the same stage three times. It's a big pet peeve of mine and I'm glad he pointed it out.
Same here in Iceland, but I kinda got used to the blue from watching the Duck Tales series :P in fact - I didn't notice until NOW that their coats were different at all! xD
Primary targets of Gamespot's review were the lack of cover walls, health that does not regenerate over time and a failure of WayForward to provide sufficient payment to ensure a positive review.
Gamespot and IGN.
COD: Ghosts Review
10/10. A masterpiece, lots of changes, amazing graphics and fish animation, plenty of DLCs to buy.
I know the subtitles are there on-screen, but i swear at 0:50 it sounds like the guy says "Well i guess shit found me out."
You know it's interesting how the game was originally going to have less dialogue but Disney actually made the offer to provide the voice acting so WayForward added in more to really utilize it. Guess that's why they didn't have an intuitive skip.
Is it out right now or tomorrow
available on what consoles ?
I just hope the cane noise doesn't get stuck in my head.
How long is the campain ?
Please tell me how I'm being ignorant. i would love to know how.
Back in my day, we had to access a sub-menu in order to skip FMV sequences or cutscenes by pushing this peculiar button on our corded controllers with a word called "Start" labeled on them, and it was quite the routine exercise at a comforting pace. Nowadays, these "new-age" whippersnappers want everything to be easily instantaneous and whatnot.
And now I feel old... ಠ_ಠ
Yeah, i miss that game, they just should remake every good nes and snes games for the next gem, i totaly would buy a physical copy of those if they cam out as a collection!
I don't get it, DuckTales on NES is one of my favorites and I love the 8bit graphics. This Remastered doesn't bring that same feeling, but rather makes me wanna go and play the original.
I feel u, its like me with Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Country Returns :) or...something like that! The original game holds memories and feelings which the new one doesn't. But for someone like me who has never played the original Duck Tales on NES, I would love to play the new one with its beautiful graphics ^^ I'm downloading it right now as we speak :D
LionEntity Blaming the remake for not holding the same memories as the original is just retarded. Ofc it doesn't you didn't grow up with the remake!
PikaLink91 facepalm....
Hachikō pacefalm...
(Facepalm)
It won't let me download it for some reason anyone can help plz is it in Australia yet
I'm always happy to hear Alan Young playing Scrooge, so I don't think I'll mind the story bits too much. =]
Actually when you got a game over in Megaman, you went back to the stage selection. Just like in DuckTales. I guess the cutscene stuff is a matter of taste, but I don't see what the big deal is. If anything they flesh out the game even more and make it more like the cartoon. Granted, it would've been a bit more convenient to skip them with only a start button, or by giving an option to disable them from the menu, but overall I don't think it's even worth mentioning as a problem.
Just a question...I never played Ducktales on NES but would I like this game?
Just because a game is based on a show like ducktales doesnt mean that the game will be the game will be a masterpiece.
To me to complain about the story is like complaining this is Ducktales. What kind of games dose´t have cutscenes. It´s not a flow. I think they are quick. But if they are´t easy to skip then that´s a annoyance. I mean Kingdom Hearts.. It´s wonderful they are making this. And you don´t wish for this? It´s a great tribute to not only the original game and cartoon. But to the 2D animation industrie that is grippling today. What game do you want Wayforward to do next?
Man i wish life was as simple as it fucking was. You know you brought the game and you got the whole fucking game. No bullshit online pass, no bullshit DLC no bullshit Gold membership to play multiplayer. The next gen consoles will be great but theres to much bullshit with them
It's strange, it looks like Cave Story 3D environments with Paper Mario characters!
Surprised this hasn’t been ported to current gen, guess I’ll be plugging back my PS3 :)
It's actually backwards compatible on XB1. (Disc only)
One of the few games i actually finished on the nes when i was a kid back in 91
I grew up in the early 90's watching this show but never played the NES game (I don't really like useing emulators rather have the real deal).
As new to the video games Its a fantastic platformer and stays true to the show.
red coat is the one EU is used too
Why aren't you buying it already? It's under 15 dollars, or 13 something euros!! At least on Steam. You WON'T regret it. Tons of cutscenes or not - they're funny and you can skip them.
Also, in Easy-difficulty if you die you have unlimited lives and re-spawn at the same place you died. So that's one nitpick off the list.
It's amazing! Dreamy! Nostalgic! Especially if you truly love Ducktales
(not only the old games but the show and the comic books they still sell new ones at grocery stores!)
Is this game worth the 7.19 its worth right now on ps plus cause I'm thinking of getting it
Why is voice slowed down?
I would love to see Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers and the Ninja Gaiden games remastered in the same way. Actually, just remaster the whole Nintendo library and throw it on steam. I'd go broke buying them all!
Release Date: September 11, 2013
I personally would have given it an 8,but Colin did bring up some good points for why it got a 7. Still though, I can't wait to play it tomorrow.
*Cough*QuickCinemasOptionOnceYouBeatTheGame*Cough*
ScrewAttack's Review was also a bit biased. At least Colin gave some good points on why someone might not enjoy this, though I consider them miniscule and I'm still getting the game.
Plus, it's WAY better than Gamespot's review.
Playing this on PC is rather hard, but it adds on to the challenge. Story cutscenes, while good for a first or second time, I can see why people can be annoyed, I don't find the gameplay uneven but just right. It doesn't really hold your hand, but it doesn't want to make you tear your hair out. This game gets an 8/10 IMO.
sad to see the game being delisted from steam in few hours :(
I just bought it on steam yesterday for about 4 euro. It's being discounted 75% at the minute.
Maybe we could get a new Mega Man game that looks like this with the hand drawn characters and backgrounds.
Hi ign you skip by pushing start and then a, once you complete there is also a quick cinematic option as well.
Reviewers: This game has some flaws like blablabla...
Inside my head: DuckTales woo hoo... (8)
Anybody remember quack shot? They ahould remaster that!
So far, I haven't seen more than a couple people that like it, and it is kind of a standard now in games that if you get a game over, you don't have to sit through the same cutscene again. Especially when you die, you won't want to see a cutscene again because you already saw it the first time! Even if you like the overabundance of cutscenes, you have to agree with me on my second point.
THERE IS A QUICK CINEMAS OPTION IN THE OPTIONS MENU AFTER FINISHING THE GAME WHICH SKIPS ALMOST EVERY CUTSCENE IN THE GAME, FOR GOD'S SAKE!
What i'm really wondering is why no-one remade megaman 2 or Super metroid in this fashion yet.
With the latest patch applied this game is now a 10 out of 10. Seriously, long gone are the annoying controls and unreliable pogo jumps. "Quick Cinema Mode" the most requested feature made this remastered version the definitive version.
Now I can safely put my NES and DuckTales to rest because of this game. Buy it asap if you are a fan of DT and thanks Capcom and Wayforward for listening to your fans...
I still want to play it anyways. It looks and seems like an awesome platformer.
