  • Chip Conley was fresh out of business school at Stanford when he bought a fleabag motel in San Francisco's seediest neighborhood. He renamed it The Phoenix, evicted the pimps, and gave the motel a makeover inspired by the style of Rolling Stone magazine. It quickly became a favorite destination for touring rock bands such as the Beastie Boys, Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Conley kept buying hotels, eventually building his company Joie de Vivre Hospitality (from the French phrase the "joy of living") into the second-largest chain of boutique hotels in the United States. After personally overseeing the creation of more boutique hotels than anyone else in the world, Conley sold a majority stake in the company in 2010 and stepped down as CEO. Now he devotes his time to passing on the lessons he learned during his quarter-century of entrepreneurial experience. He's been a featured speaker at TED, Pixar, Google and SXSW (South by Southwest). And he's also written several best-selling business books including Emotional Equations: Simple Truths for Creating Happiness & Success, Peak: How Great Companies Get their Mojo from Maslow, and The Rebel Rules: Daring to be Yourself in Business.
