    In my opinion, Val Kilmer's greatest role. His portrayal as Doc Holliday was what made this film.

    The scene where Wyatt has the shoot out in the river with all those guys is a true story. Witnesses said that it was unlike anything they had seen. Dozens of men firing at him and all their bullets missed and he took down all of them. It’s actually what made him THE legend.
    “You’re a daisy if you do” and “I’ll be your huckleberry “ are all supposedly true quotes.

    • @Rancoroth419
      @Rancoroth419 4 года назад +25

      The actual term for the period, was Huckle Bearer, not huckleberry. A Huckle is the handle on a casket. A Huckle Bearer is essentially a Pall Bearer at a funeral. When he says, I'll be your Huckle Bearer, hes saying i'll carry your casket at your funeral.

      @Iloyd Martinez this is completely incorrect lol, and has been debunked many times. At no point has a casket handle been called a huckle, its always been a handle, there is nothing called a huckle lol. The closest thing is the huckleberry, which is the word that was used in the actual script as well.
      If you would spend 3 seconds researching online before spouting off nonsense, you would see that your "fact" was incorrect from the beginning. This rumor is like the whole "In Django Unchained, Leo wiped real blood on the actress' face", which is also completely false--yet every reaction someone in the comments will repeat these falsities.

    A lot of ppl notice Doc reach for his pistol after he kills Ringo when Wyatt made noise coming up the path, but there is a VERY strong glimpse into how Doc's life was prior to the events in Tombstone. If you watch the scene after the Holiday/Earps meet up when the shooting between Creek Jack and Texas Vermillion and the crawfish breaks the lighthearted "normal day" tone of the scene, there is a quick cut to the group and each member reacts different to the shots. Beehan and Morgan both react with the most startled ducking reaction like a normal civilian likely would. Wyatt has a slight flinch but his immediate response is to turn toward the gunfire . Doc doesn't even do so much as a quick flinch in the shoulders. The fact Kilmer could pull that off deserves recognition.

    Frank Stallone, Sylvester's brother, was the guy Doc stabbed in the beginning. Some great cameos and early roles throughout. One of my top films of all time. Also love the Kevin Costner film called "Wyatt Earp" that came out only six months after this one (Dennis Quade did a great Doc in that one and lost a ton of weight to look sick). The Costner version was written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan, writer of Empire Strikes Back, and was over three hours long. By the way, the reason a building was on fire during the OK Corral shootout was because there apparently was a building on fire during the real shootout (or at least there were several real fires around that time frame, I've heard both things but can't get confirmation) so they replicated it as an odd bit of history and to symbolize the hellishness and chaos going on.

Unlike some of my contemporaries, I've managed to stay current, as it were. I have a lot of younger friends, as well as friends my own age. Plus, my daughter and I are close and she's 32. So, I don't often miss current references, and the like. There is some historical fact in the movie, but other parts were strictly Hollywood. Johnny Ringo was not killed by Doc; he was found in July of 1882 alongside a creek in the Arizona mountains near Dragoon. I have visited the site since he was buried there where he was found, and although private land visitors can reach the site as the landowner allows it and even has a gate through his fence. Although who killed him was never really known, Frank Leslie of Tombstone is thought to have been his killer and on his deathbed Billy Claiborne stated that Leslie did it.

    A cool fact about Doc Holliday was that he really wasn't that fast or any kind of an exceptional pistoleer. But he was fearless because of his TB he really had no fear of death, which gave him the edge in any fight, because those with fear will often hesitate.

    A big part that they leave out of the movie is that the Sheriff Behan was elected to that County Office as a Democrat whereas the Earps were appointed Town Marshals running as Republicans. The Clantons and McClarys were ranchers around Tombstone and were major backers of the local Democratic Party...so Behan was indebted to them as political backers. Also, this is just 15-16 years after the Civil War (counting from the O.K. Corral in 1881).

    14:15 That's the Buntline Special. That revolver was given to him for his service as a peace officer in Dodge City. Interesting thing you might notice is that he carries his revolver in his coat pocket instead of a holster. There's a story behind that. Apparently, there was one time where Wyatt was sitting in a saloon with his feet propped up on a table and he was leaning back in his chair. Well, I guess he ended up leaning back too far back and his gun slid out of the holster, hit the ground, and the gun went off inside the saloon. Nobody got hurt, but Wyatt was really embarrassed by this and from that point on he carried his pistol in his coat pocket.

    The movie made it seem like everything happened in a few months but in reality it was longer. The OK Corral gunfight was in Oct/1881. Virgil was shot in Dec/1881 and Morgan wasn’t killed until Mar/1882. Doc died in Nov/1887 but Wyatt didn’t learn of it for a few months later.
