Opinel 6 was been the EDC of my grandfather for all his Life. Now After a Very lot of knife i used; i return to the origin and i bought One of these too
Back the classics is an intelligent choice ever. Some products are classics. To be a classic we need an inexpensive, well done, nice design and a brand who gives you a guarantee.
I have run the full gambit of EDC knives...from Opinel to Swiss Army to Southern Grind to Cris Reeve and many in between. After much soul searching I now carry Ohta friction folders and Opinel knives. If I need something more I carry a small, non-folder like an Izula. Most everything else is for silly and just for show (cough cough my Grimsmo Norseman) :)
The Walnut is the nicest handle Opinel makes imo - still inexpensive, very lightweight and tough, looks stunning, and doesn't swell as much as the standard beech when wet. I use the #6 Walnut as my hiking/backpacking carry because it's so light (at 28g) and the blade is just about big enough (7.4cm) to cope with most tasks. The Inox makes sense in damp environments and for food prep too. #8 Walnut is a handsome beast - wish they also did my favourite #9 in walnut...
The Opinels do neck carry well. My No.12 is in a neck carry sheath. You know it’s there but it’s not uncomfortable. Thanks for the idea with the Autosol, I never thought of that.
Great edc review of the number #6, i'm about to get the same one as it seems to be the perfect size and super handy. I've seen a review by a cook who use it as one of his main knife for precise tasks like cutting garlic etc. at work. There are also people who slowly boil them in oil (30min max with gentle fire) to get the blade out quicker Cheers!
I think 6 is a little bit too short! I used 7 since i have 12 years old and it started to be short to cut sandwich and cut big « saucisson » ahah i dont know how to say it in english 😅 i just buy nº8 and its for me thé perfect size! But its just my feeling! Everyone have his own feeling 👌🏻
I'm looking to get my first Opinel and would like some advice from someone with first hand experience; I am 183 (6ft) cm and about 68 kilos (150lb) with men's medium sized hands. I know the No 8 is the standard, but I'm looking at a 6 or 7 to carry every day, most likely in the pocket. Which do you think would be a better fit?
just measure the width of your palm with your hand, my palm is 3.5" so the 3.63" handle #6 fits like a glove (you can check by looking at Opinel size chart for handle length), though my #8 ain't feeling out of place either
You can take the ring lock off with some pliers and keep it in a different pocket. Means the knife is able to be both locking and non-locking 😊 Thanks for watching!
Removing the locking ring from your #7 will not make it UK-legal because its blade easily exceeds 3 inches. In point of fact, if you measure the cutting edge of a #6 by 'rolling' the blade it comes out at just a whisker over 3 inches, but you'd have to be unlucky to be pulled up on that, I reckon.
you cannot carry a little tiny locking knife, I've carried the number 8 for years but if someone told me I couldn't carry a little locking knife like that I would tell them to kiss my ass and in the fight would be on
Liking your vids... but this knife, aghhh I don’t get it. Opinel just do nothing for me, don’t like the handle, don’t like the blade shape, think the whole thing is just unpleasant. Nice video all the same 👍🏻
You're right! by todays measures it's a very antiquated design, but I think there is a certain timelessness about them as wood and steel suits any era in history. I also feel there is a simple elegance to the two handed manipulation, and non-locking nature of it... these knives weren't designed to be tactical folders, just svelte cutting tools for the common man. Thanks for watching!
Tools, Time & Travel totally agree there is always gonna be a place for opinel, they have there own look and totally unlike anything else. I agree with the ‘romance’ to a two handed opening, it’s a very systematic thing, I’m opening my knife, I’m going to cut something, then close it and put it back in the pocket. Once again, great vids 👍🏻
@@zxcbfadbnatrn adding a thumb stud or making it one handed opening to me would take away the heart of this kinda knife. I can see the nostalgia and feeling attached to opinels, they’re just not for me, I personally prefer the more modern style. 👍🏻👍🏻
Luckily we have a million knives to pick from. I love the opinel because they are very light (allow me to carry other things too without feeling burdened), and the best slicers. Also available in carbon which is easy to sharpen, and gets sharp. Did I mention sharp?

Maybe my answer comes a little late, but #9 walnut exists
@@pacolapillule6614 Yes just a little late - I have the #9 in Walnut now - and it's great!
Perfect for fishing.
N°08 is perfect size to my palm... I have N°06 in my tool box... Such inexpensive great knife.

Great knife everyone should have one or a few
The locking collar can also be used to lock it closed (that's what th notch is for).

@@sebhand31 saucisson does not translate xD thank you for your advices ^^
Saucisson is dry sausage.
Video of how to make the neck knife leather would be great
Thanks for the comment! Will certainly do that 😁
I got an opinel no4 since I needed a small knife and urs great will defo get the no5 ,no6 as well
Thank you for making this video ... very useful and informative
I love the mod into a neck knife.
Thank you! I'm wearing this around my neck as I type this :)
For small opinels 6-7, carbon steel is better (it does not bend as much), for higher sizes, stainless 😉. Take care, Irène.
nice Seiko Samurai. I wear the same watch everyday!
Schön gezeigt,Opinel find ich auch gut.
😁
Opinel Messer sind ein Favorit von mir!
Danke fürs zuschauen!

The only reason it's not my EDC,is the vibrolock, which sadly makes is an illegal carry here in the UK
You can take the ring lock off with some pliers and keep it in a different pocket.

Remove the ring or carry a #5
Dear lord, the uk.
Opi nel great utility knife.
I have 6 and 8, and prefer the 8. the virolock works better in the 8

What is with UK knife laws???
Excelente navaja
Can you use it for prepping food?
Yes. Full flat grind and thinness of a blade makes it great for food preparation.
Subscribed.
It’s wild that you guys can’t even have locking blade knives. Like what?
Bro sounds just like the guy from baby reindeer 👀
Thuis man carries hisOpinel auround his neck! In France everybody think he is nut!
It’s ok but not EDC for me. 👍🏻
Sounds like your government is a wee bit controlling. Can a prince carry a lock knife?
Ik heb al jaren een nr 10 die ik in een schede om mijn nek draag, uit de weg en niemand die ut ziet !!!! Opa

When it's the cops telling you that it's a bit different. Canada has pretty strict laws also, but the authorities are very chill about enforcing them.

In my opinion opinel Is still best slicer folding knife
