Thanks for sharing. But, when we first went to this new, renovated IMP, it felt very surreal to me. I truly miss the previous, authentic, original International Market Place. The local Hawaiian vendors, the Mom and Pops shop, wood carvers, etc.. in the heart of Waikiki was priceless. You can spend hours and still be in awe way back then. We’ve seen many similar outdoor malls like this. It’s just not the same.. Mahalo🌸

I like the old IMP of 1976! Trader Joe’s was in the banyan tree! All the booths were by locals, my husband had his puka necklace custom made to fit him by a local craftsman. It was more like old Hawaii and we loved it! Things have changed too much 😢. I’m glad we were there in 70’s, we lived in the Hilton Lagoon Tower and it was awesome! I just lost my husband but I have my memories!

@@Livingtheglobe very sorry for your loss and yes the 70's were far better we are the lucky ones to be sure! Keep the old memories discard this one and put it where it belongs. We know where that is. Oh and a few hyms from an old song from whay back then to cheer you up, I wanna go back to my little grass shack in keaoki.....damn I forget the words ....in Hawaii, where the Humunukuapawaa ges swimming by.... Mahalo Nui Loa for those old memories yes it seems to me that back then they were far more Akamai than they are today, no Ohana feel just materializm and sales clerks constantly at your back ruining the experience but then again that experience is long gone now nyway bummed and bummer!

Yes, it was wonderful...Dukes Lane marketplace on steroids...
It also had a "dive" bar there my wife and I liked to go to....and Fatty's for some great Asian food....

Yep, it's not the same. The Food you could buy in the old International Marketplace was cheap and good...
It's unfortunate that people coming to Waikiki for the first time will never know any of this...
They will think is was always like this.

Great video (as always)....I visited Hawaii 9 times during the 1980s, and always stayed at the Princess Kaiulani (close to the Marketplace) and I would visit the Marketplace everyday. I really enjoyed it.....this new Marketplace is nice but I miss seeing the small shops and kiosks where you could bargain for what you wanted to buy. Thanks for bringing me up to date on my favorite place!!!

We visited the mall every day we were in Waikiki because we stayed about a block away and had to park in the parking ramp overnight since our Airbnb didn't have parking on site.
Really impressive collection of stores, nice restaurants, and great coffee at Kona. Best of all, that's where I ran into Irina and Devon.

Yes. I visited IMP way back in the early 80s when I was a flight attendant and flew to HNL frequently. It was just a casual market place with vendors. There was a vendor that sold us oyster. If we open it and there's a pearl, e vendor would set e pearl in a ring for us. There were casual eateries like a Chinese eatery. IMP is so changed now. So modern with high end shops. After almost 3 decades, I am looking forward to visiting IMP n Honolulu again in Jan 2023 next year!

Thanks for update with this video, indeed it is unrecognizable for me, except for the great banyon tree I remember well with the many Hawaiian type venders, open air, unique items more local merchandice and great local reasonably priced food.
Wow 3 floors now 100 outlets, entertainment, and hi-end fancy stores as you mention, all are massively different.
I lived in Diamind head end Waikiki almost 8 years and walked by Intl Market Place on way to work. Usually each week my work colleagues would lunch at one of the the various original "local" restaurants no longer there. The trick was to not look or act like tourist, so the people hired to pass out brochures left you alone, ha!
Change inevitably for tourist dollars, my last visit was during its renovations and not reopened yet.
I like others commenting here, who miss the original Market is understandable especially for locals. Thanks again for up date, it is beautiful integrating retail, food outlets and all the lush landscaping trees, flowers etc. Just have to remember the past in good memories with new ones now happening even with the issues of covid effecting qualities of life.
    Aloha!!

I was born in Pearl Harbor and we used to go to Dunkin Donuts...which used to be across from Moana Surfrider Hotel. My mom was best friends with the owner of the hotel and would go for brunch while we got donuts and $5 for something at the market. I had not been here since 2004 so I kept walking looking for it and realized it was gone! I wanted to get my dunkin sprinkle donut and sit in the rocking chairs that used to be in the front of Moana Surfrider🥺I miss it and could not remake the memory.

I used to work there in the 70's, I am soooooo disappointed in the seere changes I now see. Did they think this would be an improvement? Honestly, after seeing this video, I can only imagine what the rest of Waikiki looks like now, probably totally devoid of Waikikis old world charm which this place seemed to hold onto despite the ongoing neverending progress. Where's the culture? The charm? This makes me totally ill, sickend by the way we make things better Is the Marlin ( 500lbs ) still there? materialistic Beverly Hills Rodeo Drive replica. I feel lke we have ruined her sad but sooo true. I miss the little old lei lady who made her flower leis on lewers street and Kalakaua. I realize that she died long ago but truly, that little woman and the other International Market Place should never have changed they were icons, historical places that should hve been protected. Damn shame, seems to me that it is all about nothing more than shopping then more shopping, and the most expensive stores yet? Wht gives? Truly, very very sad and the Don Ho statue?, Pleeeeze, spare me the Tiny Bubbles, I wanna know where Duke Kahanamoku, Queen Liliokalani and King Kamehamea are? This is sickening Pave paradise and Put Up A Parking Lot, Just sayin! Very Sad indeed!!!!! If I ever go to the Amazon I really would dislike it if the natives were sporting Nike tennis shoes thats what this feels like yuck! Just so sad really it is who are these city planners anyway and shame on them and the locals for letting this happen, what brah, you no mo shame or what?!!!!

    • @Livingtheglobe
      @Livingtheglobe  Год назад

It seems like you're feeling sad about the changes in Waikiki since you worked there in the 70s. I understand how it feels to see things change so much. It's important to remember that change happens, but it doesn't mean we have to forget about the things that we love. Maybe we can find places in Waikiki that still have the charm and culture you remember. It's clear that you care a lot about Waikiki's history and traditions, and that's something to be appreciated.

The old International Market was so much better it gave a lot of locals a place to sell not all these high-end stores that the majority of people cannot afford such a shame one more place they ruined Waikiki

I prefer the old International Market Place. I think it lost the charm with high end stores.

Poor excuse for “ International Marketplace “ of the past. I am very disappointed with what it is today. Not a place like before not even close…

Hey William! 🤗 I'm sorry to hear that the International Marketplace didn't live up to your expectations and it's not the same place as it was before. 😔 It's understandable to feel disappointed when something you loved has changed, but I hope you're still able to find joy in exploring other parts of beautiful Waikiki. 🌴 Don't hesitate to reach out if you need any recommendations for new places to discover! 🌺
