Right. back to basics. I am a retired boatbuilder and I remember the boats built in the 70s. They were so overbuilt that if all the core failed then it would not matter . If you can walk over the deck and not feel any give you are ok . If you find any rot under a deck fittings just cut it out. Find an old allen key , Grind a sharp edge on the short side and put the long side in your drill , use this to cut out your core and backfill with epoxy and fibres. This boat is 50 years old and of course the windows leak, just take your time and re seat them all. You do not need to use expensive sika, use commercial sealants that window fitters use. This boat will look after you day in day out, It is a good buy, believe me, I was in the trade 50 years and I would take it to sea, However there are many modern cats that I wouldent take . Keep going, it will all be ok.
Totally agree. in the 70's I think Fibre glass was a new product. So it was P for plenty, just incase. My First Yacht was a Clansman with 1" thick Hull. You can literally bounce them over reefs! And Glassing is the best and easiest to fix as long as its dry. But as you say, Grind out until you find the good stuff, Then glass layers back in.

I'm not normally in to RUclips stuff, however I kinda look forward to seeing your progress ever week. You two are doing great! One at a time, you guys got this! Much* love from the USA!
The most important thing is to get everything water tight, and that needs to be your first focus. When it is raining or you're out at sea, a leaking hatch or fitting is making your life extra miserable, so take care of those leaks first. After the boat is waterproof, all the work inside will be much easier and your mood will improve a lot. Cheer up and get on with it! We'll keep on supporting you as best we can.
You both have the right attitude to the project. You are adding value to it fast, and if it means staying ashore for a couple of months more, it is worth it.
Use an Allen key and slow speed drill to scrape out the rotten core from the filler hole, then fill with thickened epoxy. Don’t spread yourself thin over too many tasks, keep focus and make a good job guys 👍
This is easy and fast. Just remove some rotten core material, tape the underside and fill with epoxy. Then just re drill the hole to fit, seal with butyl and you will be fine for ever.

You two are so sweet! Some times you could try to drill several holes around an area you suspect maybe rotted or compromised. Dig in the holes and loosen any debris. Use a stiff metal wire and bend it to scratch out the bad stuff. At the boat store they may have epoxy you can then inject into the holes. This stops the rot and helps the strength! Easy going now. Take your time and plead your case with the yard manager with covid and all people will give you more time. Ask him for a break on the price because everything is going sky high! Blessings to you both!
My interest in your flow is very real. Deal with the unknown as it happens. Whatever you repair make it stronger than before. The more you do the more you learn and the more you really know your boat. This project will make you grow in very helpful ways for the vision you have calling to you. You certainly are both blessed with the partner you have. Highest Blessings
Failure is not an option you two got this covered. It's called life and life with challenges is the best life. Look what you two are learning great things about how to manage difficult situations. I think you will enjoy the boat a lot more because the dought about different things will be gone. This is a great boat keep up the great work.
Relax guys, you're making progress! Don't get down on yourselves! When progress stops, that's the time to worry. Be kind to each other, you're both stressing, trying to meet your deadlines. Being short with each other won't get the work done any faster! Take good care, chin up, and keep going, you'll get there!!
One Step at a time Mark! My House is the same way, I am 64 years old and way in to deep but hey you just keep moving forward. Sure beats the alternative.
There is no fail, there is only do! You'll get there in the end guys. You already own the boat, so it really doesn't matter how long it takes. Yes, you would prefer to get in the water sooner than later, but, you can't sink on land and it's much easier to refurbish on land too. There is a silver lining to everything, its all how you look at it. Myself and everyone watching will continue to watch and support you both, no matter if you're in the water or on the hard. Don't put yourselves in a bad position by rushing.
Ive been rebuilding a 73 cuda for about 2 years now. Ive def felt the pain you have felt. Where its like even the smallest task after you felt like you been putting in so much work or effort. Just overwhelms you or honestly, makes you upset. Its part of journey and youll overcome!
Nothing really unexpected on a boat of this age, just time consuming. Life would be more positive if everyone had an Admiral Nads behind them. You got this!

You’re adding value and repairing your home. You’ve got good foundations you can build on that. Let the drill bit do it’s job slow down the speed and light pressure it’s takes longer the drill bit stays sharp.
Hi guys, you are doing well. It just seems to be more things to fix, but you are wonderful and you will prevail because you have a wonderful attitude. Thanks.

Guy''s! I think you're an amazing team, you definitely won the jackpot when that lady gave you her heart young man. I think the comment from RealNubs is right, put up an awning over the decks. you will keep her dry and still be able to work whilst its raining. Also you shouldn't be down hearted at seeing all of your leaks; at least now you know what you need to fix! Good luck guy's keep going - you are an inspiration to us all.
I wish I could speak another language in addition to English I'm so impressed with non English-speaking people that speak English better than most of us
I bought my boat when it was in a very bad state. I decided to do some of the work my self and farmed out some of the work. I had time on my side. What helped me was to walk away for a few days, freshen up and then get back into it. I have owned my boat for over 22 years now.
They are baffle plates to stop sloshing in the tank. Our house drips here and there when it rains. It was my main bug bear about that boat, your caravan windows. Think of it like a jigsaw puzzle, at first there are 2000 pieces and 2000 spaces and one by one it turns around until there is one piece and one space even though you never see the day that happened. Soppy bit: You are lovely, genuine people. Everything you say is witty or heartfelt or both and we love watching your epic adventure. Its always too short. I always want to go and help. Stern glands and Cutlass bearings priority. PS Stop worrying. Its all good. PPS Numbers growing yay.
Remember when you were pulling out all the great surprises? Especially the sails, hardware and the tools. Some days are great & some not so great but after all this is finished and you’re sailing, it will be worth the extra time.
I love the thanks to the previous owner. I am in the same boat(no pun intended) where the previous owner fell into ill health but carried on until he couldnt anymore. I have a lot of undoing to do but love that i can see how hard he worked to try upkeep her. I dont think i have ever set a siphon without getting a gob full!!🤣
I have the feeling you will succeed as half the work is your determination and both of your hearts is in it. Keep up the great work you will have yourselves a fine boat very soon! Looking forward to seeing her sail with all your hard work paying off!
I will not criticize your decision. I will applaud your enthusiasm and determination. I'm like the others you mention who are wishing that they had this as a project. Carry on. Do your best. Be patient, and don't forget to tell each other how special they are. You will be so happy with what you have accomplished and I hope at that point you can step back a little bit and feel proud of it.
Keep your eyes on the prize, which is to sail the world with a boat that is in your price range, but need some sweat equity. Be glad that you are working on improve your own home and know all the ins and outs of the boat before your journey.
Learning is not free and it's not easy. What you are learning now will serve you for the rest of your life and will be much more useful than may appear at the moment. So, well done.
You are totally right about almost every conclusion in this vid. Yes, lot of people envy your situation. Yes, everything can be fixed! Yes, this is your own learning process! Yes, it looks manageable, even though you probably have to recalculate the time by factor three? But what the hey - you are doing your adventure and for the moment you are on the hard, which is fine. 🤷♂️ Time is the only thing we've got - seriously!
I remember the despair of leaky windows and water damage and the daunting task of repairs. After 6mths of repairs (including other things requiring attention) it gained me 5yrs worth of new experiences, fond memories and kept things bone dry and snuggy inside! With the soft spots on the deck where thru holes are I would clean and dry the area and pour resin in as a secure backfill and re-drill holes as required. Sealants generally only last 5 - 8yrs before they fail and start leaking again so pull it apart and seal it up quick and get going to make the most out of what you have.
You are my current favorite sailing channel. I love the let's get in the water and do it approach; way better than the plan for years. The cash limitations make it way more interesting than watching people throw money at their problems. I am looking forward to seeing you make a passage at some point!
Dude, don’t kill yourself sucking diesel! Pro tip from a former auto mechanic... Easy steps to drain a fuel tank: 1. Stick drain tube into the fuel at the bottom of the tank. 2. Plug all holes with tape, plastic, or tightly stuffed rag. 3. Momentarily pressurize the tank with air. 4. After you see the fuel flowing, remove the rag, plastic, or tape to let the air flow into the tank. If you have the receiving tank at a lower level than the bottom of the supply tank, it will form a siphon, and the fuel will continue to drain on its own. The receiving tank MUST be lower than the supply tank. If you’d like, you can pressurize the tank with the drain tube, then the pressure will start your siphon when you remove your air nozzle. Hope that helps. Keep up the good work! Don’t give up. Take the project one bite at a time. 😁👍🏻
Create a siphon with liquid in the tube with one end in the old fuel when you drop the other end below that level - it will flow into the container - keep up the good work - stay positive- enjoy the journey- it will be your reward when you achieve your dream!
Lookin good! $400,000 boat for just pence on the pound? Remember some bloke is at his banker's desk checking off 25 more years till he can get that 'turn-key' cat. Other idea? Remember to always ventilate so fresh dry air comes in, even in the rain. (15 years living on anchor and never a spot of mold.)
@Natai... those are totally handy. It would have been difficult in this case with how little fuel was at the bottom of his tank. You need to have a decent throw with those.
Your wife is your support. such a wonderful personality. don't give up. I have never had a wife to support me like you. You know the boat had problems when you bought it. take a break don't burn out. but never give up. you will regret it.
Nadyana might be a good idea to wear eye protection when working around rusty things. My hubby once got a small flake of rusty metal in his eye and it was difficult for ER doctor to remove.
You have the right mined set, carry on and things always work out with hard work. I think your doing just fine..and you have a wonderful wife that's not afraid of work! Just keep on keepin on.Take care and be safe.😎🐈👍
Standing around sulking isn't getting the work done. The important things to get done are those things you need to keep the water out of the people tank when you splash the boat. You can fix the deck while the boat is at anchor. Stuff like hull fittings, zincs, and bottom paint take priority.
I said once on one of your live streams that ''You guys rock " and its very true all the hurdles that keep cropping up you guys get thru together ! and its much better to find all of the problems on your cat now on the hardstand, than beating into a 30 knt gale !! off shore keep up the good work you guys rock !!!
Just an FYI, keep a cheap umbrella or two onboard. You can open the hatch, stick the open umbrella out the hatch, and tie down the handle with weight. I would remove the port lights/frames and place a cheap piece of acrylic through bolted and bedded flush with the hull. Then when you are ready you can put the port lights/frames back in.
You will get it done because you have the spirit and the belief to do it. You are a great couple and Nadiana's cheery smile is infectious. ( I hope i managed to get her name right). It's great to see you on your adventure and I always look forward to your videos. Best wishes from Yorkshire UK

Take your time and plead your case with the yard manager with covid and all people will give you more time. Ask him for a break on the price because everything is going sky high! Blessings to you both!
I'm watching this while I tidy up a bit and come back to Mark having a seizure in a cupboard lol awesome.
My cat has 27 hatches and windows... my favourite day was when it rained and not a single hatch or widows leaked NOW!
73 Cuda nice project .....
73 Cuda nice project .....
Such true soldiers.. I send you all my best wishes. I am confident with your attitudes that will be a joy for the two of you.
Nothing really unexpected on a boat of this age, just time consuming. Life would be more positive if everyone had an Admiral Nads behind them. You got this!
I watch a lot of sailing videos, but your guys is easily my most anticipated one every week. Love the episodes, love the longer ones too! Don't get too down right now, you are doing exactly what you are supposed to do and time will tell.
N is so cheerful, positive and encouraging. You are a fortunate man.
I can’t wait to see you accomplish all the work you need to do! 🌸🌺🌹
I am in awe of your ability to find the mindset needed. You will make the wrong things right and cherish the days your sitting watching that beautiful sunrise. Saying remember those mean work days. Look at us now with beer and wine in hand. You WILL see those days and a whole lot more. Thank you for all your doing!!!! I can’t wait for the next video hard times or not it will be great!!!❤️⛵️
The time invested now will pay dividends in the future with reduced stress and confidence in your boat and it's systems = More time for fun!. Keep moving forward... you've got this!
You’re adding value and repairing your home. You’ve got good foundations you can build on that. Let the drill bit do it’s job slow down the speed and light pressure it’s takes longer the drill bit stays sharp.
and a drop of light oil on the bit will do wonders to aid it in cutting.
Thanks for the advice!
Come on guys chin up! You'll get there.
You should have a mop and soapy water and clean the exterior while it's raining and think of all the memories you will have when your 80
Very true.
Just remember you guys are doing what a lot of us won't leave our comfort to do! Keep up the good work!
We're with you! Keep the faith! You are an inspiration!
Hi guys, you are doing well. It just seems to be more things to fix, but you are wonderful and you will prevail because you have a wonderful attitude. Thanks.
You won’t fail! One project at a time... 1 success at a time. In the end you will see a pile of success and a well known boat!
Look forward to see you sailing eventually but I enjoy seeing the projects
Your deck may be rotten but your girl is pure gold!
It will get there, keep your positive attitudes and you'll be enjoying the sailing soon enough
There can be no courage without fear! You got this! Most of us are rooting for you and majority wins so keep crack a lackin’! 👨🏼🔧👷🏻🪚🔨🪛⛵️⛵️🏖🌝🌴
Much respect! I think the two of you can tackle anything.
Keep plodding on , you’ll get there eventually . 😃
Stay positive guys, your both doing great work on the boat, little by little you’ll get there.
The rocket fuel comment killed me😂 also calling your dearest a chav.
Well done folks your tenasity is infectious
I am learning a lot watching. Thanks for sharing. I am glad to see that in your later videos you never gave up!
Yes! You can do it!
Keep it up guys! Don't let these small set backs get you down. Y'all are doing great and I love watching the progress every week!
I am proud of you both. I will keep watching. I am enjoying your videos! Good luck and keep going.
You just need to remount all the windows and hatches with butyl tape and Sikaflex marine sealant. get er done man, You got this !!
Forget the sikaflex. The butul tape will work perfectly do not put silicone around it! easy to clean off keeps flexing will never leak
@@wayneanderson1641 Nope. Sikaflex is the way to go on old boats and window frames. None will be straight and flat.
Any way you can do an Amazon list for us to help you out?
My husband just said the same thing. 😊
We'll have a look this week, mate
You are my current favorite sailing channel. I love the let's get in the water and do it approach; way better than the plan for years. The cash limitations make it way more interesting than watching people throw money at their problems. I am looking forward to seeing you make a passage at some point!
Dude, don’t kill yourself sucking diesel!
Pro tip from a former auto mechanic...
Easy steps to drain a fuel tank:
😁👍🏻
Thanks for the tip and encouragment!
I always use the siphon tube that has a trapped ball bearing valve. 5 shakes and it.is.flowing.
@Natai... those are totally handy.
I going through this problem now....it's been a very painful week.
You have the right mined set, carry on and things always work out with hard work. I think your doing just fine..and you have a wonderful wife that's not afraid of work! Just keep on keepin on.Take care and be safe.😎🐈👍
Chin up old chap. You guys got this.
Standing around sulking isn't getting the work done. The important things to get done are those things you need to keep the water out of the people tank when you splash the boat. You can fix the deck while the boat is at anchor. Stuff like hull fittings, zincs, and bottom paint take priority.
It's not the Orient Express, yet, but it is far from being a train wreck. You are doing very well, keep on it!
